View Full Version : Welding a diff for drifting?

It appears that there is no option or availability of an LSD for my S12 so the only way to get the wheels to lock is to weld the diff.
Is this going to be OK for drifting? Will it be too much having no slip at all?
Not too bothered about what its like on the road as when (or if) it becomes my drift wagon the only time it will be on the road is when I'm on my way to a drift day.

Ooops, gonna have to moderate myself, not exactly 200 related. :smash:
the car wil be pretty much undriveable on the road m8 you'll have to drift the fecker around every corner
I'd imagine it'd be pretty good for drifting but as Chris said, might be too extreme for normal driving.
I'm sure locked diffs give you pretty bad understeer don't they?

 The rear wheels will try and push you in a straight line

the problem being? :D
welded diff will be fine so long as you don't try driving it like a normal diff. going to do the same to my starlet if I find a new alternator for it:)
drove the chevette on the road with a welded diff for a while, wasn't too bad, but mini roundabouts were always fun :D

it will be shocking for normal driving, u'll have to be really brutal to make it break traction instead of understeer, but it'll be loadsa fun
they drift ok with out a LSD !!!!!

will be undrivable on the road, but better than doing it to FWD.

The back end steps out nicely in the wet and can be just about controlled but sustaining the drift is damn difficult without an LSD.
Cant get it to step out much in the dry though, it just spins up one wheel.

I locked a diff in a chevrolet monza V8, not quite the same as this but 300 bhp rear wheel drive meant it could do 200-300 yard power slides- it would be longer but my chicken feet come on automatically at 100mph - public highway and all that, officer!- the only time that a locked diff showed is driving slowly round corners, roundabouts, parking etc, other than that fun fun fun!!
