Hi Guys,

My air con is getting a bit wiffy.

I guess I need to change the filters, anybody done this on an s14a, or anybody know where I can get a manwel?

Cheers

Nik

I hope the system is the same on the S14 model as I would like to do the same. I'm not sure about filters being fitted though.

As a general rule unless you are an expert and know exactly what you're doing it's better not to touch aircon.

Leave it to the professionals as there is a risk of doing serious injury to your eyes if you cock things up.

Have a look in yellow pages for air-con specialists and get some quotes.

If it's smelly it's unlikely to be a hardware problem.

There's so much moisture in the system that bugs like living in there.

There is a de-bugging aerosol spray from someone like Comma (don't know who) that you spray down the interior vent into the system. Personally I don't see that working. You'd be better pointing any aerosol into the air intake wherever that is (below the windscreen ?).

There is probably an official method on controlling this but Nissan would probably want to reshell the car.

Sounds like I might have to wait until the next service and get the filters changed.

Just have to upgrade the smelly tree until then, might even get 2!

Isn't that what cause legionaires diseas in that hospital in the mid 80's?

And yes you can get an aerosol that allegedly cleans and disinfects the heat/cold exchanger element.

Probably make your car smell of dettox.

There are no air filters in the AC system.
If there were, they would not get rid of a smell!

The smell is caused by bacteria living in the condensate trapped in the drip tray in the heater box. You can buy as mentioned, stuff to spray in there. Usually a regulalry used system should not smell. Check your drain tubes are clear. I'm not sure where they are on an S14 but get the car on a ramp and start looking! You could also try drying the heater out by switching off the AC, switching onto fresh air (should sually be left there anyway) and putting onto full heat, full fan and leave running for half an hour. This should dry the condensate and may help. USe your AC regualrly and not on recirc as that will make your car smell too

YEAH GOOSEGOGE RIGHT, NO FILTERS AND THATS WHERE THE KIFF KOMES FROM! I'M IN THAT GAME SO I'LL HAVE A WORD WITH MY BOSS AND SEE IF ANYONE DOES A SPRAY TO KILL OFF THE BACTERIA IN THE VENTS BUT ALSO DO WHAT GOOSEGOG SAYS WITH THE HEATER.
DONT FORGET TO USE THE AIR CON ON COOLING FOR A FEW MINUTES EVERY COUPLE OF WEEKS IN THE WINTER...... KEEPS EVERYTHING TICKING OVER NICELY.
I'LL START A NEW THREAD IF MY BOSS GIVES ME ANY IDEAS ON THE SPRAYS.

Nice one lads,

I will give that a try. I have not had the car for long so I am not sure how much the air con has been used.

Cheers

Also, I keep my AC on permenantly as it keeps the car dry and free from condensation when it rains or in the winter. Also good when you have people in the car to prevent condensation. AC is cool! Use it often
It is activated when you use demist anyway even though you have the AC switch off

There are no filters on the air con, goosgogs advice is good, and there are several aftermarket anti- bacterial sprays that you can use to kill of the stink, one can usually is good for a few doses, it works for about 2-6 months or so. trial and error as to which to use, some can make your car smell like a latrine for a few days.
