View Full Version : Engineers - Rant

Right, rendering myself open myself to much flamage here and deffo much criticism, but here goes anyway with my rant cos it really annoyed me.

Was listening to Mark and Lard on way home on Friday, a guy comes on and announces he is an Engineer, when asked further, turns out he fixes washing machines  so hes NOT an engineer then, hes a 'washing machine repair man'.

Similar jobs inculde TV Engineer, Vending machine Engineer (they visit our works vendors), Refuse collection Engineer...the list goes on, I expect we'll be seeing Big-Mac Engineers appearing soon.

Does this pi$$ any other 'Engineers' off ? ? or just me ? ? I know there is a fair few who frequent this forum.

So it now sounds like Im a pompous arrogant git with a chip on my shoulder...not too far from the truth then actually :p

Kev, will ban you for that!

It just means we have to add other titles to our jobs, like Design Engineer, Mechanical Engineer etc etc

When will it end tho???

Heh... my Dad would probably buy you a pint for that little rant - he was a design engineer, and would often go off on one when someone called themselves a television engineer or such like.

Fair comment

Probably related to the fact that if you look up 'Civil Engineers' in Yellow Pages its says 'SEE BORING'...

...think about it. :D

engineer n .... 2. a person who repairs and maintains mechanical or electrical devices

engineering n the profession of applying scientific principles to the design and construction or engines, cars, buildings, bridges, roads and electrical machines.

That said, I do agree. Apparently according to my job title I'm an engineer, but I'm not, I work in IT.

fluffy?
furry perhaps if it's left in one place for too long... but never fluffy...

or is "fluffy" what you call the g/'s cat to make it sound like you really like the thing when in fact you mean something entirely different?

Engineer = person who says what needs doing and how they want it done

Technician = person who deciphers the scribbly sketch on a fag packet, decided it wont work, changes the spec so it'll work and lets the engineer get the credit with management

:D

The other side to Danny's post is when the technician changes the spec because it's easier for him to make then the thing doesn't work and the designer gets his arse kicked by the management

With all respect to people who have job titles that feature "engineer" they aren't:no: An engineer is a person who has a proper qualification in an engineering disciplin eg mechanical, structural etc, not a City and Guilds in plumbing. You may also notice that engineers are unable to spell disciplin

I'm an a electronic engineer, but friends still think I can fix televisions (despite my protests).

The fact I've knacked most of them beyond any possible repair whatsoever hasn't sunk in yet.:smash:
Oddly enough I always manage to fix my own TV's though ;) .

I would have thought the technicians would do their own sketches on fag packets seeing as they're usually on coffee/fag breaks or down the pub.

I STILL get that at 32! I think an engineer has to have at least a HNC/D and have suffered 4 years ritual humiliation and training (an apprenticeship I believe its called!):whip:

I agree that 'engineer' is overused - we see salemen now called 'sales engineers' when they have probably never seen a toolbox!

I've been an engineer all my working life - from Telecommunications Engineer (I fixed phones) to Production Engineer (I fixed phones) to Engineering Manager (I made phones) and finally Directional Information Design Engineer (I make signs :wack: )

Sorry but an HNC/HND is actually a technicians qualification. I agree with Jeffers though, the Engineers name and trade is a totally misused and un-appreciated skill in this country.

Institutes like the IEE or the Mech eng equivalent seek to redress what qualifies someone to be an engineer and have minimum standards in qualifications and experience.

The fact is all the engineers i've workerd with have been either extremely lazy, utterly incompetent or completely mad with no concept of reality or efficiency.

I know you're not all like that.

The Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) with whom I am a member stipulate that to be classified as an engineer you must hold at least a recognised degree along with relevent experience e.g. BEng(Hons) and 19 years in various engineering companies as in my case.

The overuse of the term "engineer" p's me off too as I left school at 16, did an apprenticeship and worked my way up to my current position of Senior Project Engineer after a further 13 years part time study !!

Mind having said that I've met a million graduates who use the term "engineer" and are fecking useless when it comes to the practical aspects of the job that a decent skilled person with common sense can manage

Ahh big hammer engineering, now you're talking my language

It's a sad fact that where i've worked, Engineers and senior technicians have been in their jobs for so many years, they've become complacent. Being a big test facility all of our stuff was hands on, think in your feet problems, some just didn't have the common sense to be any good, and fell back on their technicians to bail them out on more than one occasion.

I'm in the process of having my job title changed from Technician to Network Manager - hopefully should gradually reduce the amount of the idi...err... teachers that bring OHPs/videos/TVs/etc to me for repairs

Definition of repair:
Fault Reported by teacher (on an OHP): "the bit that usually stands up is drooping, I think it needs playing with so it stays erect" *realises what she just said and runs*

Action by me: fiddle... fiddle... SNAP "oops" *takes it back* "nah, it's knackered - you'll need to get someone to make you up a new bracket" *walks off sniggering*

Dagnall Electronics. Look in Farnell for Transformer. NO THEY ARE NOT FOOKING ROBOTS IN DISGUST!

as for hammer engineering, tranny's are one thing that do work better when you bash them.

however i am completely mad.

when an engineer hands you his business card and it says "fred Blogs" design engineer. bsc, iee, ddt, bbc, omg(asc mem) etc
i always feel he's trying to indicate he is intelligent, because i would never know it to talk to him, work with him etc.

My official title is an 'ATM Service Engineer' and when people ask me what I do I actually feel embarrassed to tell them that as it makes it sound as if I know the machines inside out and actually do technical repairs on them. I dont. Mostly it involves unjamming notes from the mech and replacing drive belts. Its a total no brainer and really very very shite.

The hardest bit about my job is putting up with the brainless wonder that I have to work with.

The best engineer I ever worked with was the guy I did my apprenticeship with, he was an unpleasant arrogant git and as old as god (and the spitting image of Victor Meldrew!) but he could plan, draw out and make anything. He had no qualifications whatsoever..............................
