View Full Version : stock Sony head unit mystery
Whats going on ?????
the remote control stick for my stock Sony head unit on a '97 S14a ... last night went nuts ??
All the buttons on it now do something different to what they are meant to ?
the on button, now mutes, the advance track, doesnt, the mute button changes from FM to CD.
Anyone else had this problem ? ..... how do I put it back to normal ?

I know this post should have gone in the ICE section .... but this early in the morning, the ice link, was far to far down the page ... I would have hade to use the scroll bars on the side to get there ..... too much effort on a Monday morning.
sorry

Try checking the wire from the remote to the head unit for damage, other than that I haven't the foggiest!
There was a thread a while back on how to remove the head unit if it proves a problem.

I think there's a switch to make it work left or right handed. I'll check the instructions and get back to you...

Haven't forgotten! I looked this up and there is a combination of key presses that can switch it back. Can't remember what they were tho http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif will post it tomorrow...
Cant wait ... its driving me nuts.
I have taken the unit out, unplugged everything, plugged it back in ... AND ...... still screwed up ....... I think this is gods way of telling me to get a better head unit.
Couldnt he of waited until I got all the other mods done first ?? ...... perhaps he is trying to lengthen my life span ?

Right, all you have to do is 'Press SEL for 2 seconds while pushing in the VOL control' - straight from the instruction book. Oh yeah, SEL is the sort of square button with the little ridge on it down and left from mute.

I Knew there was a thread about this somewhere!
My "Rotary Commander" went apeshit today.
Thanks Ben, from another happy punter.
lol, someones using the search facility correctly...I thought this was recent.

Only problem is that is the code for changing Left Hand to Right hand use.
My "Rotary Commander" is acting in a rather more bizzare manner, volume equates to changing waveband, Source button now mutes etc.
Anyone had this and cured it?
Hi rich, got your message. Its difficult to say what exactly is causing it without having a closer look or at least trying another remote which leads to my next question, can you get your hands on another remote and give it a try. If it turns out to be the head unit and you want it repaired mail me and we'll sort something out.

Looks like Saturday is going to be take dash apart day
Sounds like one of the resisters in the remote has gone (It works out what you are doing based on the resistance on the line.)
I have got a list of what values you should get from what button press's some where i'll see if i can find it, else search the net.
Cheaper to just buy another remote, think a few people have removed them from their S14's so you might be able to get one on the board.

After finally getting around to it, I took the centre console apart again today. Surprising how simple it is the second time you do it.
Anyway just like Johnny, no loose connections whatsoever, but it now bloody works!
Didn't want to leave this thread without a conclusion, but I didn't do anything other than take the console apart and put it together again!
BTW During the time without it I had forgotten what a handy gadget the "stick" is.
