taking off the gearknob

How do I take off the leather gearknob? I want to put a new one on it. Anyone have an idea?

Just twist it very, very hard. Its only screwed and glued in place so with sufficient brute force it will come off.

Won't that break the screws?? Don't I have to unscrew the screws first and then turn it with all force??

Its got the thread inside the gearknob it doesn't have any grub srews holding it in place.
