Should the turbo make any kind of noise when giving some wellie? Mine screeches when I do, it has only done this since raising the boost from standard to 15psi.
However it doesn't always do it, but more often than not. Is this normal or is there a problem with the turbo. The car has only done 36k, so surely it cant be the turbo on its way out.
Any comments greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Dave.

Mine whistles a bit if I boot it but thats down to the K&N rather than the turbo. I don't like the sound of it if it's screeching. It could be the turbo on it's way out if it's been neglected (no warm up/cool down, lack of oil changes etc.).
Any smoke ?

Mine whistles sometimes (especially the first bootfull of the day) Its seems quite normal and the only mod I've made so far is a mongoose (actuator hasn't gone on yet, need a boost gauge!) You should of heard my mates old fiat uno turbo, sounded like a bloody foghorn!
Dave,
The more you up to boost, the more audible the turbo becomes (me thinks).
Went out in a 500hp Skyline once, and the turbos on that screamed!! Wow, that is something I will never forget http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif
At 350hp they whistled, but upping the boost to silly levels created an alltogether new sound.

The noise is definatly a screeching rather than a whistle, like I said the car has only done 36k and i have serviced it properly, and from the history so did the previous owner. I always let it cool down before switching off. How long roughly should it be warmed up for? It does seem to be louder when I first start driving it.
There is know smoke at all.
Cheers

I had the same problem with my 1995 S14, really bad screeching when the turbo was boosting.
Turned out to be a blow manifold/turbo gasket, only problem is to fix it you have to take the turbo off and just about everything else on the right-hand-side of the engine bay!
Takes two days to fix and $700 AUS.
Sounds like turbo gaskets or cracked manifold.
Some S14's crack the exhaust manifold between 3 and 4 (at the back of the engine.)
Most probably just the gasket between manifold and turbo though - sometimes the nuts work loose (even though they have lock tabs)
Biggest difficulty with manifold removal (at least in my experience) is getting the EGR pipe off!
Full Turbo gasket set from Nissan including exhaust manifold gasket is around the £70 mark - and it should take a good mechanic about half a day to do the job (took me just short of a day)

Thanks for the help boys,
Is there a way of telling if the gasket is blown without removing things or is it only obvious once turbo is removed. And if the manifold is cracked is it easily noticable and how much am i looking at to replace it.
Cheers
Dave.

Yeh you can remove the heat shields and either see or search for the blow
I use a section of brake pipe and some silicone hose as a good tool for finding exhaust blows. Be carful not to blow out your ear drum when you find the leak!
My manifold-turbo gasket blew on my S14 last year and I think it may be going again but it sounds like an exhaust blow not a whistle. If this is what's wrong with your car, I'd advise anyone to drill through the nuts and studs once re-assembled very tight and lock wire them so they can't rattle loose!
Last time I got gaskets, the genuine Nissan head-manifold gasket was a whopping £80 discounted! Fortunately I didn't need it. The turbo gasket set from Turbo Technics in Dorset was a more reasonable £15 or something
Do not attempt repair in situ! It's not too difficult to remove the turbo and manifold complete. EGR fitting a potential nightmare if it's rusted siezed at the back of the manifold. Start soaking it with WD40 ASAP
Still much easier than an S12 though!

My exhaust noise turned out to be a loose EGR pipe! Phew!
