View Full Version : Replacing RHS headlamp bulb
Got in the car yesterday, switched on the lights and the goddamn right hand side headlamp went *bingk* and nolonger wants to illuminate the road http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif
This is the bulb infront of the battery, has anyone replaced on of these? If so, please let me know what you had to do.
May try and get Nissan to fit it for me, but they will probably charge shedloads of cash, or say, "we are too busy".
Need it done asap, as the car looks silly. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif
Thanks,

Only done it on my "non-a" S14, but I understand if you take the battery out on yours you'll get improved access from behind the bulb.
Disconnect the bulb, unscrew the big plastic cap, pull off rubber seal, flip off the wire spring that holds the bulb in (don't go breaking it like I did http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif ) and the bulb sould almost fall out.
Like the good book says, "fitting is the reverse of removal" http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
You might end up with grazed hands http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif
Other option is to take the headlight unit out, only takes about 10 minutes once you figure out what's got to come undone.
Hope you have more joy that I did !

Cheers Tom.
Had horrible thoughts of alarm going ape on me, but then remembered that someone posted a topic about it, and the alarm has its own battery, I hope http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/eek.gif Anyone know for sure?
Tom, what did your alarm do when you disconnected the battery?
Will see if Halfords do any funky bulbs for the 200 and will probably replace both http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
Thanks once again,
John.
You can disconnect the battery, it doesn't do anything nasty. The keys didn't lose their codes or anything like that.
I was a bit worried about this myself, I replaced a battery the other month when I tried to start the car in the carwash and nothing happened http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif Had to push the car out up to my ankles in soapy water ! Lovely.
As for the alarm, I've got a spare one somewere, don't remember seeing a backup battery on the board...

I changed mine again on a S14 "non a" and did it in 5 minutes without removing any other component.
Most difficult thing about it was those damn metal spring clips which hold the bulb in! Other than that it was no problem.
Show off http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif
yeah, it's the metal springs alright http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif
As I released the metal spring, a bit of plastic which held it in place at the bottom, broke and fell on the floor... without this bit of plastic, getting the metal spring back in ceases to be trivial.
So... don't break it http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

John....mate....its a light bulb!!!!!!!!
Don't take it to Nissan and pay them lots of money.....pay me the money and I will do it http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif
I would only want £50 http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif
How many Nissan owners does it take to put in a light bulb!! *LMAO*
I replaced all my headlamp and fog lamp bulbs in the summer for pure white one's, fairly straight forward job, u just need someone with nimble fingers to get the new bulb in/old 1 out as there aint much room.
You shouldn't have to take the headlamps out, I looked at that option when I started and couldnt be arsed...
Later,
JP
I (bravely) changed both the bulbs on my s14a the other week... Just undo the battery strap and slide it away from the light, no need to disconnect it, then take out the bit of plastic and start grazing your knuckles taking out the old bulb and fitting the new.
The retaining clip is a right nasty job to get the bulb past though, especially as you won't be able to see it!
Good luck http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

>>has any1 had any luck fitting brighter bulbs?<<
Put xenon on dipped and laser blue on main beam on my S14a (from Halfords) on the basis that xenons were sold as 30% brighter. The standard s14a on dipped was pathetic - like having two bicycle lights tied to the front.
Job was made much easier with an 3cm inspection mirror on a telescopic rod so you could see into the bulb housing, didn't need to take the airbox apart

Don,
Have just fitted to of the halfords Xenon 30% brighter ones, same as Amcluesent by the looks of things.
They seem quite good, it is daylights the no though...... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/rolleyes.gif
