View Full Version : Tyre choices ?

...and on a lighter note, can anyone recommend some sensible tyres for a bog standard 200. The OE are Yokohama A-028, very capable in the dry, but a little lacking in the grip dept once things get a bit damp (40+mph straight line wheel spins - not good !).

I am inclined to go to Bridgestone S02 with standard size 205/55R16. I ran these on the last car (Fiat Coupe Turbo) and they worked well. Can anyone comment on road holding in wet and dry and also wear rates ?

Cheers

Toyo Proxes T1-S, excellent soft though so I doublt they last as long as Potenzas, but only about 2/3 of the price.

Pirelli p6000's are the best allrounders that I have everplayed with .... bags of grip in the dry and wet ... and quite hard wearing.

Hi Andy,
I have S02 PP's on my 18x9 rims on the rear. Previously I had Continental Sport Contacts (N1 spec). I've found the S02's have a lot more grip than the Conti's both in the dry & wet. I can't really comment on how they perform in the standard 200SX size (205/55R16) as mine are 255/35ZR18s. The size difference itself will give you a lot more grip let alone the rubber compound and tread pattern. I have the same tyres in 225/40ZR18 on the fronts & all round on my wife's B*W (Sorry all!!) and again, excellent grip in the wet.
Bear in mind though, you won't be able to get the S02's anymore as they've been Superseded by the S03's. Same Compound & Rubber Technology, but different assymetric tread pattern, heard they're even better.
So far I've been thru, Eagle F1s, P7000's, Fuldas, Conti's & S02's (although on various different cars) and the S02's I've found to be the best as far as grip and steering precesion is concerned.
I've done about 5000 miles on this set and I have about 7mm of tread left. I'd be happy if they last about 15000 miles or so.

Cheers
Didin

Have to agree. Had S02's all round and due to me swapping them round needed four new ones about two monthe ago. Local tyre place is really helpful (owner has an EVO VI) and he recommended the Toyo's. I have to say they probably have more grip than anything else I've tried (P6000,Yok 520, S02).

539's are a lot better than the A028 which are absolutley pants, worse than pants infact.
They are great in the dry, ok in the wet, but easy to spin ( sorry impress the girl friend) on roundabouts, and awful at the first sign of snow. SO2's ? loverly, brilliant etc etc. Loadsa grip. Have got a lot of wear on the front drivers side though!

Andy,

what did you think of the Fiat? Compare the fiat to the 200? And why did you buy the 200?

and in answer to your question, I use Bridgeston S02's and swear by them.

Thanks,

Oh boy! I stuck a set of Pirelli P Zero C on my spare set of wheels for next week's Z Club meeting at Goodwood

http://www.pirelli.com/en_42/this_is_pirelli/motorsport/motorsport_tyre_range/circuit/images/img_2229Pzeroc

They're absolutely awesome compared to standard road tyres. Sticky compound and very little tread but road legal! I won't be using them on the road much though and not in the rain either! At £150 a corner It'll be a while before I get some more! (I got given these with little use)

Anyone going to Goodwood on Sat 13th?
Lot's of Jap stuff there and still places left for track action

I have Yoko A539's on my 17" rims, and they have NEVER let go in the dry, but do spin a bit in the wet - but I don't push it in the wet so it's ok! The worst thing is you won't get more than 10k off a set of good Yoko's

On my standard rims I had some Falken GB-R's - which are sh*t so don't touch them. I also had Avon ZZ-1's which were pretty good, and fairly cheap too - well worth a look.

Those Pirelli P Zeros described above were simply awesome on the track

When they heat up, they go liquorice soft and grip and grip and grip...

More grip in the wet too but not so good through puddles and with a wear rating of 60, won't last lone either

They should be good for 3 or 4 track days though

Ok I have a choice of

225/50/16 Toyo T1s for $189
or Pirelli 5000 Drago for $179

I have had the toyos b4 and loved them except they wore a little too quickly on the rear.
How would the Pirelli compare?

Had P6000's on my (was then standard) S14 and burnt what was left of them within a couple of thou'.
My previous car was a Calibra (Vauxhall piece of SH*T!) and had yokies A539's which were fantastic!
Then decided to put the same on the S14 and... err... well.. mmm ..
gripped ok i suppose but only lasted me 8k miles.

Just eaten a set of Toyo Proxies, T1S in 15k and got about another 2-3k left in them.
Fairly hard wearing tyre for the price and quite sticky, now wearing thin and the rear end will not stick to the road no matter how much of a grannie i drive like!

Mate of mine has a Rover 600ti (2L turbo - 200Bhp) and has always had Pirelli P-Zeros and
swears by them - so I think that even tho' expensive at £125 a corner, it will be a worth while 500 quid.

If anyone's got any suggestions, or are the P-Zeros the best i'm gonna get?

Cheers,
JP

I'm quite happy today! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

I just ordered 4 245/40/17 Bridgestone RE010's!! (Standard fitment on Honda NSX and Toyota MR2-turbo)

They cost the almight price of £65.27 each, including VAT and delivery!

Hopefully the company I ordered them from will manage to send me the right tyre, to the right address, and charge me the right ammount!

Oh yeah... got them from www.tyres-sold-online.co.uk (http://www.tyres-sold-online.co.uk)

Ross/Dan,
What's a good price for F1's then ? Does £110 inc vat and fitting sound about right (for 225/50/16 that is) ?

You can get a Dunlop Sport 8000, or Pirelli P6000 for £92 and £96 respecitvely (225/50/16)... but then you have to get them fitted (from the place I mentioned above)

Is the general consensus that P6000 are pretty good in the wet then ? I've got them at the moment, and I aint all that impressed. So I definitely don't want something worse !!!!

Anyone tried Uniroyal RTT-2 ?

Tom

JackaL

I've never used a Uniroyal personally, but they are designed to be good in the wet... it's their main marketing boast!

Just been reading that the uniroyals and F1's have understeer characteristics. The fwd lot don't like this ofcourse, but on a rwd car this is probably a good thing (until I hone my powersliding skills to perfection http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif )
