View Full Version : When is an uprated fuel pump needed? and AFR's
Ola Bandito's,
I haven't touched the boost yet on my car, will do when the money tree in the garden decides to grow some more branches. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif Or my goddam agency pays me http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/mad.gif
I have got an uprated:
Air filter,
Zorst and
NGK Plugs.
So far I am getting more air in and out.
When might I need a beefed up fuel pump? Is this only really needed when running high boost? Or are other advantages to be had from one of these little Gizmo's?
ALSO, I have seen in the SE Parts catalogue that they stock a "cheap" AFR which they recommend for lightly modded S14/S14a's, EG Filter and Zorst.
What with Dan_Blitzed "mis-hap" and talking with Richard_M on Sunday I was wondering what people think of this? Is this a disaster waiting to happen or was Dan just unlucky due to a shagged Lamba sensor?
Dan, what did Abbey say about the lack of AFR, do they reckon this caused the melting plug?
Any comments will be most appreciated,
Cheers,

John, i've just ordered a group A fuel Pump. I'm currently running around 11-12psi, 225bhp at the wheels and the standard pump seems to handle this fine. Not sure an uprated fuel pump is that neccesary, but after speaking to simon norris i thought it would be a good precaution against leaning out at high revs and the possible danage that could cause.

The fooked Lambda didn't help, but it doesn't really do much when driving flat out anyway. The main problem was the lack of fuel at the top end. I know these garages are all out to earn money, but Abbey did say that with the Induction, de-cat and zorst, it should have had an AFR straight away. This has been backed up by loads of their customers (not least my mate Glen, with the R34 that's on my website). I don't know any of their customers that have had an engine let go at all. If they want to take money off me, then fine, as long as there's a good reason for it. Lets face it, if it didn't do anything and they were just ripping me off then I'm sure it would have gone again by now. It's just the way I drive http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Right. The lambda sensor at wide open throttle doesn't actually do anything - it just operates in an open loop mode. Which means the ECU just fuels at the maximum rates set at the factory. Fine for standard parts but not so good if you are running higher flow intake/exhaust. Which is why you need fuel enrichment when you start modding the car.
I've got the basic HKS AFR, rather than the Super AFR. Just a little box which intercepts the AFM signal. I'm sure someone could make/has made a cheaper version. I've been told that'll be OK until I've got the funds for something better as long as the mods are fairly minor.
Thanks for the replies guys.
how much did you pay for the AFR? £130ish?
Will get one as soon as I get paid, along with oil breather kit, DSBC, alloys and fitting of my R33 Bremobos and 315mm disc. Oh and may get new shocks to boot too. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif
Expensive month, me thinks http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif. But FUN http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

You'll have to excuse my ignorance, what is an AFR and what does it do ?? ND don't mention this as being necessary in a lightly modded car. Can someone enlighten me ??

Hi Mark.
The AFR is an Air Fuel Regulator.
It is needed on a slightly modded car (filter/Zorst/de-cat pipe etc) to control the air/fuel mix. Otherwise the car can run lean if it's not getting enough fuel. It works by intercepting the signal from the AFM and manipulating it before it gets to the ECU. If the car needs more fuel, then you fool the ECU into thinking that it's getting more air than it actually is, thus it then tells the ECU to chuck in more fuel. This is the cheap way of acheiving this, the best way though, is a new ECU, which is a bit expensive me thinks, me thinks it will have to come later though.

Get it, thanks Dan !!
Would fitting a unichip achieve the same objective, i.e maunipulating the values to the ECU to ensure there is enough fuel ?? Are there any other aftermarket ECU's avilable for the S14 ??

Unichip
DTA
HKS F-con 5
Apexi Power FC
and some others no doubt

Dark, a unichip does a lot more than an AFR, but could be used to perform the same function (and a lot more at a later date).
the fuel pump could be needed earlier.
I ran a 244hp (flywheel) on Sunday ... it should have been around 280hp ... what happened.
The guys seemed to think underfueling and I needed a new fuel pump and pressure regulator.
