I cant pick up tax until monday morning (until insurance company sent me certificate) will the cops be alright if i tell em I just purchsed or will they screw me like always

They'll screw you, it's up to you but not technically legal.

They'd prolly screw you. If you put an old disk in the window (just so there's a tax disk there) you're prolly less likely to get caught though...

Drive it sensibly though, don't give them any excuse to pull you over in the first place and you should be ok.

Although...
If you have an accident I don't think you'll be covered by your insurance. Afaik it will cover you for producer reasons but not for claims :wack:

I agree, no tax will invalidate any insurance you have. Tehnically then you are driving without insurance.

when they screw me will it be a fine or points.

Fine I dont mind..as long as its a resonable one but points...
I HATE points insurance is such a b1tch without em and then you have tell about previous convictions.

Fine, got done for it once. Forgot to renew first month, then thought sod it and let it go another.

Biggish fine I seem to remember, £200+ about 10 years ago.

License plate scanners fitted front and back on police patrol cars are linked to the DVLA database. I wouldn't risk it personally.

I've done it, been pulled for it, told em i was just on way to tax it and did the next day - never heard a whisper from em again

As for the insurance thing - technically if the vehicle isnt taxed then it shouldnt be on the road, but is still "roadworthy" and therefore the claim should be paid. I'm sure that some companies may try to wrangle out of it but its not like the tax disc has any bearing on the condition of the vehicle and therefore would be inconsequential in terms of the accident itself - an MOT however would be a different matter of course.

Dont quote me on it, because I'm not always right - but i'd drive with no tax under those circumstances and expect to be ok

If it's just a short journey I'd risk it personally, but I wouldn't drive it around with no tax for any amount of time.

they will screw you (if they choose to) you have no leg to stand on.
the fine is only £30 though IIRC.

yep also i was told by my insurance that I wouldn't be covered if the car wasn't taxed and driven/parked on the road.

Like i say it was nothing for me

As far as im aware they make you pay "backtax" - so its all dependant on the amount of time the vehicle has been untaxed.

Is the car declared SORN? If so, i think they may wish to proverbially bumfcuk you:nod:

Lol - my fine was before the law change with the SORN shit. Can't remember if it was so large cos of backtax or not.

if you've got all the docs. can you not tax it before you set off?

mind you I've driven for a month with no tax before.... was truly skint

I havent got the insurance certficate yet. Will be Monday most likely, although I have rang insurance company and informed them of the new car.

I have bought a car and driven it without tax (edited to say JUST FOR THE JOURNEY HOME).

Just be sensible - use the backroads or drive at night!

If you get stopped you'd have a chance of getting away with the story - after all, it's plausible.

If you did get pulled make sure you tax it asap anyway.

PS Never heard of tax having a bearing on insurance.....

well, if i recall correctly, you are actually better off not bothering to MOT, Tax or Insure your car... it works out cheaper even if you get caught. thats why a LOT of people dont bother (ok so they also dont give a flying **** if they spin off the road and take out a couple of kids in the process etc; they'll just run off, and as they probably havent registered the car to their name the police cant trace them... a similar thing happened to my ex-wife's sister but the only damage was a dented rear bumper, thank God).

anyway I think your reason for not having the disk is valid and fair but if you get caught the penalty is minimal.

besides chances are you wont get stopped if you dont do anything silly. :)

IIRC you can make the ins. companie fax or E-Mail for printing a cover note, I've taxed a car on a faxed cover note before

I have been caught a few times with no tax in newly bought cars. Every time I used the (true) story that I have just bought the car and insured the car via the telephone, and was waiting for the cover note. Police have always let me off with a warning, but reported me to DVLA. DVLA always wrote wanting cash:- payment of fine (£20), plus backdated tax, to the date of purchase. I wrote back to DVLA and pled my case, admitted guilt, and asked for leaniancy, and they have always let me off. I have never been accused of the insurance not been valid due to not having tax, and I don't undersdtand how that works, it does not make sense to me. In my eyes, as long as the car is roadworthy (not even MOT'd) you are covered third party. It is the driver that is covered. not the car....but I'm no expert on insurance, just a Civil Engineer that likes getting pissed.

You cannot tax a car with a faxed insurance note.

Quite correct. the documentation for taxing the car has been tightened quite a lot this year.
Having said that I taxed my bike with an MOT which had the wrong registration number. Only noticed when I was in the post office queue. Thankfully the person behind the counter didn't spot it.

I've been let of with no tax once before as i'd just bought the car that afternoon and had the MOT and insurance docs (with that days date on it as the policy start date).

I've also been caught without tax twice in a row on the same car ..... parked outside my house on the friday night (the day i bought it) , again about 10 hours later (8am on the Saturday morning. I went to the police station on the Saturday morning with my new tax disc and complained....there was no way i could possibly get it taxed between 6pm on a friday and 8am on the Saturday morning. They told me it was just "tough luck" and advised me that next time i should just hide the car somewhere they won't see it. I didn't pay the fines, and after a few reminder letter, i never heard anything back about it.

I've also been stopped while driving with no tax... got a 40 quid fixed penalty, got told to take the car home and park it till it was taxed (the next day of course). Got a hort1 and didn't have any grief with insurance or anything.....

whatever you do...DO NOT use the tax disc from another car.... a mate did this on his bike and almost ended up in jail for fraud (and contempt of court as well iirc)... he was lucky to get away with a 500 quid fine.

Think its all rubbish! I picked my car up on sat lunch drove it home to Derby from Gravesend went to sort the tax but they had closed ... Drove the car around for the bank holiday weekend.. I had the filled out tax form and all the docs ready for the moment the post office opened, inc cheque etc... What can they do? The moment i had purchased the car i could not tax it as the post office was closed... If they had stopped me i would have asked them to take me to a open post office and i would have taxed it there and then... There is also no bearing on your insurance if your car is not taxed only MOT (Car is classed as un roadworthy withough MOT hence no insurance is valid)...

Grow a pair will ya!

hmmmm quite a few dodgy geezers on this board. You all surprised me with your 'no tax' stories. Cant say ive EVER driven a car that wasn't taxed.

But after reading all your replies Im going to pick it up in the evening. If I get pulled worst that can happen is a fine but I hope I can talk my way out of it.

AshT_200

If you do get caught with no tax and it goes to court, the fine is means related.

However, If you stick to the speed limit, you've nothing to worry about, cos the police won't even notice you

If you do drive it with no tax just make sure you have all of the documentation possible with you including the receipt/bill of sale so that it proves you have only just bought the car. It's not in any way a defence but may make you seem less like a "dodger" if you do get pulled. Oh yeah, if you do get stopped be NICE and act a bit naive, can't say it will get you off but it may sway it a bit in your favour. Good luck.

Got stopped without tax by pig on a bike(3 months over) he told me pigs only stop cars without tax to check for mot and insurance-its the only external hint you have that you may/may not be legit. Once you've been stopped, dvla get involved, then you get yer fine for no tax(mine was £35)

DO NOT fit another cars disc-its fraud and you will be bumfcuked by the pigs.

LOL my mate did that using the tax from his classic 1960-something free tax MG while twating around in his lotus sunbeam around some lanes. he got pulled so the grabbed the tax out of the window and ate it LOL. He could have put it in his pocket or something sensible, but no he ate it.

he got away with it though, after taxing it that day he took it with him when he took his producer in. lucky bast.

an "aquaintance" of mine has a sticker on his bike where his tax disc should be....... probably the best sticker i've ever seen on a car/bike/scooter/caravan/etc.....

"I'll pay my fcuking road tax when you fix the fcuking roads"

You cannot tax a car with faxed insurance. Only the original is acceptable.

The only exceptions to this are for newly registered cars and where the post office is being slack.

Having the car taxed is not a condition of any insurance.

You can drive a car without tax providing one of the following applies:

1. The car is taxed but has had the disc stolen and is reported.
2. The car was bought less than 5 days ago.
3. The date is less than the 5th and the last disc expired the end of last month.
4. The car is on trade plates.
5. Your insurance/MOT has been delayed for some reason and DVLA have been notified.

i havnt read through all the posts but if it hasnt been said then, it is not a criminal offence to have no road tax it is a civil offence, there anre no points awarded to licence and the police cannot prosecute they can only advise dvla that you were driving without tax, that takes a while before you will be aware that you have been caught, if you tax the car soon and start it from the beginning of the month that you bought it in then they will not take any action, trust me, been there done that, more than once.

ON NO ACCOUNT PUT A TAX DISC IN THE CAR THAT BELONGS TO ANOTHER CAR BECAUSE THAT IS CRIMINAL AND IT IS FRAUD
