View Full Version : Strength of CA18DET
How physically strong is this engine once all the usual strengthing methods have been put on it - metal gaskets, forged pistons etc. Does it compare well against a strengthed SR20? I'm wondering if they will be able to take the high power turbo's like the newer 200sx's can, case in point the Top Secret one with 840bhp which is still a lot more than a load of Supra's (and they're indecently strong).
What would a realistic top horsepower be from a fully strengthed engine?

Good question
Quest would you care to comment.
Actually, could we try and compile a list of strengthening-only mods here? I'll list what I think are for strengthing:
Forged pistons
Bottom end (balanced?)
Con rods
cams / pulleys
head gasket
crank (knife edge it)
head (gas flow, port)
What others have we got?

Well, it depends on what angle are you looking at it from. If your question is, whether the ca18det is strong enough to be very drivable on the street and at the same time, reliably put out enough power to scare you outta your mind ? The answer is yes.
The jap drag link caleini_350 just posted: http://www.amkread.co.jp/Pages/Event99/RankAJ99-2wd-1.html
prooves that the ca CAN box with the best of 'em, despite being handicapped 200cc, no? If THIS doesn't erase all your doubts....
Marks car in the us is another testimony, as he recently drove his ca 4 hours, up to a big car show on the us east coast, put it on the rolling dyno with "STREET" boost, then drove it back. Output was measured at 385hp to the wheels! Do you need more than that ?
As I said before, I'll go out of my way to talk to guys like this because from experience, I've found them to be a goldmine of valuable info on what works, from what doesn't.... and they're not out to sell you anything, like some vendor, so usually you get "the real deal".
Information is a most valuable tool, and until I'm equipped, my cash stays in the pocket. Don't have time to experiment or funds to do things twice.
As far as those big dollar high horsepower efforts, there is a whole lot more to that stuff than meets the eye....
You ever wonder, how is it that with the incredible horsepower output claims, loads of technology and ma$$ive dollars pumped into the SR, the 14yr old mitubishi 2.6 truck motored Sakura STILL reigns supreme ?
Firstly, what's this about the mitsubishi 2.6 engine? What does it reign supreme at, high horsepower outputs?
Also, the drag race link - very fast times but what kind of power would that be running? Would that be equivalent to the HKS Drag 180sx? (that's the SR20 though I guess?)
I was wondering if it was possible to get the CA18 up to SR20 power levels that have been seen around 600bhp. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be happy on the road though. Getting the CA18 up to 400bhp in the UK seems to be at least fairly costly, what would the cost be to get it another 100 / 200 bhp? Any ideas?
