View Full Version : What's the point?

Another night in the pub. The same usual conversations. The same location. The same faces.

As Jack Nicholson said in a certain film, is this as good as it gets?

So I open this one up to the floor, whats the point? Feel free to take that question any way you like it. Discuss, no more than one page of A4.

:)

There isn't one.

We just choose to ignore that fact :)

I get that feeling. Just ****ing lemings moving from one cliff top to another! You may note I'm not terribly possitive tonight!:(

I understand, mate.

S'just a fricken' shame that the only alternative is death, and I don't particularly fancy it myself.

I cant rember the last time I got down the pub!

Imagine not being able to go down the pub / offlicence and see how bad it is...

Holmes14a
23-09-2003, 23:31
Well you say that...........................

You think you'll go and take your mind off somin.........you sit there with it lurking in the back of your mind......................then, the next thing you know the thing you were trying to forget about is the main topic of ****ing conversation.

Doesn't help that i haven't missed 1 night at the pub in the last 5/6.

Fan fecking tastic!:indiff:

Holmes14a

D, death is not an option:)

grinder

Take that to its next logical step and you start to wonder why we are here at all.

Does anyone realy mater in the overall scheme of things?

Holmes14a
23-09-2003, 23:32
Just noticed my ****ing posts aren't going up!!!!

LOL, tonight gets better and better.

Hummmm

solution idea #1

Get tent
put tent in car
drive somewhere far away you havnt been before
put tent up
go to pub
meet peole who are diffrent / very diffrent / speicial :wack:
try and find the tent after a few

that bound to concentrate the mind

Over the years I've pondered this whole does it mater/why are we here stuff and ultimately I've come up with the conclusion that nothing really maters. Nothing we do, short of detonating a nuclear bomb, will have any influence on the world around us.

Everyday people are struck down with illness and we are powerless. Everyday things go wrong and we stand dumbly by. Ultimately my philosophy is meh! it's a Holmes14A mantra that you should say when somin bad happens.

Your car's been squished.....Meh, what can you do?

Your birds left ya, Meh, there will be another.

Your jobs gone, Meh, somin will come up.

Try saying it the next time somin gets on your tits. It works.

**** me I'm on a downer tonight.:ghey:

oh deep questions.

the point? a hard one. you can make your own point. you can choose to understand aspects of your life as relating to your point.
maybe this is as good as it gets. maybe it isn't. some people want to stik around to find out, some people don't
some people make their own path, some people are driven down theirs (neither is better than the other, both can be painful).

If you do not feel that your life has a point or purpose, then you have a choice.
If you feel that you have a point, you have a choice.
The options are set out by you, but you do have a choice

There is no point in life - cept for the points that u make and create for yourself

Holmes14a

Think I'll ignore that one

Cath

lol, when I get pissed off I just think to myself that whatever's causing it will be sorted and forgotten in 6 months or so, then just get on with it

On the grand scale of things then you're probably right - we might all be an insignificant speck on the universe. However we're all in the same boat so all that really matter is how you exert your influence on the other insignificant specks around you.
Make someone laugh/cry/love/hate/think/contemplate and you've made a difference in their life, is that not enough?

does this work tho?
If it does, can we swap lives for a while? Say 6 months?

tends to work for me, mind you I'm quite a shallow person

Hmmm. No point......

No point, but surely rules that should be noted to improve your and other peoples lives. Be nice to people and you'll be treated well too (in theory).

I'm with Gaz I think, make an influence in someones life. Ideally for the better, but you take what you can get.

This is all kind of missing the point as this has been turned to more of a personal level thing. I kinda meant in general, but I suppose you can't address the bigger picture without first observing the personal things.

Ultimatly, if you're gonna be fatalistic, this thread doesn't matter, but then does anything?

Balls to it, this is a waste of time.:indiff:

And yes I am in a bad mood today.

in theory and in isolated cases.
In my experience, anyone outside your group of friends won't return the favour.

I'm with Gaz I think, make an influence in someones life. Ideally for the better, but you take what you can get.

perhaps the only lasting point to anything as, if you're luck, it will lead to better things. You can only make a difference to people because everything else is transient.

This is all kind of missing the point as this has been turned to more of a personal level thing. I kinda meant in general, but I suppose you can't address the bigger picture without first observing the personal things.

Exactly. you can not understand the outside world without making reference to your inner world because your inner world is the only thing that you will ever truly own and know what is happening with (unless you are mentally ill, but thats a whole new ball game and I don't think we should go there)

Read into some buddhism and understand that "That which begins, also ends" - quite a profound statement and I think answers your question.

Its best not to think about it realy.

I heard a quote somwhere (cant remember where)

Do not ask how to live your life, instead proceed to do so.

men also have biorythms. granted we may not show obvious signs or warrent really annoys adverts for frankly painful looking plastic coated supergliding lookatmei'mfertile devices, but we also go through cycles of hormonal change.

Yes, when I have my period and I adopt the name tampon, cos I'm a stuck up cnut!

The only spiritualism should be what comes from inside. We all know the world kicks us square in the bollocks at every ****ing turn, so we should understand how we work on the inside and adapt accordingly. I try to be nice to people and it gets me ****ing nowhere. I refuse to change though. Just need to buy a box.:indiff:

hehe, think we need Mascrat more than once a month just for everyone who's bored as **** all the time

Everything is transient - hence the only things that you can exert influence on are the things that happen to be here at the same time as us - be it on a personal or a global level.

I don't think you need to understand buddhism to realise the significance of Ponyboy's sig and would encourage as many people as possible to think about it before dismissing it as fortune cookie BS.

And I've had a pretty bad week too.

holmes you sound like Freddy Nietzsche mate :D

I did a degree in this sh1t to try to make some sense of things, fine lot of good it did me

I reckon Epicurus got pretty close though, a few close friends/family, shelter, basic sustenance, the means to acquire knowledge and the space to be creative, everything else is superfluous cack.

btw re: the pub thing, make the most of it, some of us can't remember what the inside of a pub looks like we've been messing around with shitty nappies for so long  ;)

Still, I can't remember being bored anytime since I was a teenager.

Tenman
24-09-2003, 13:58
heh, best bet is to have an open house policy with a few people then when your feeling really pissed off just go round and bug them for a bit and nick their beer, I too don't remember what the inside of a pub looks like and I can't afford any mods either

LOL :D I can't afford any mods until the wife has completed her mod list for the house, which has been underway for 7 years now.

My survival technique involves cheap strong lager from tescos and copious herbal remedies. ;)

Tenman
24-09-2003, 14:06
cheap Asda lager  don't like the herbal remadies though...

have to say I really don't miss going to the pub that much, wish I could afford more shiney bits for the motor though

SFC
24-09-2003, 14:13
Aye, herbal remedies not for everyone, turns the wife into a full-on mentalist :D

Why not do what I did and get busy with the silver paint and laquer - Halfrauds doing 3 cans for a tenner :wack:

Next step is stick some tin foil on the pedals :smash: ;)

SFC, what can I say, I like to think a bit:)

Don't complain about the pub thing, at least it sounds like you've got a nice baby factory going on there:D

Luckily, I've got some like minded mates and a best bud to drink with that's in the same boat as me. We may be slowly killing ourselves with booze but at least we have a laugh. Well I say laugh, I'd say a more prolonged version of the above with some offensive humour thrown in for good measure:D

I've said it before on here but as a priest friend said to me once:

In the torment of the insufficiency of everything attainable we come to realise that in this life all synphonies remain unfinished.

Apply that to your car, your situation or whatever. Things aren't always as bad as they seem, some people will always have it better, some people will always have it worse. Trick is to be happy with what you got.

Starionman, nothing new under the sun eh? Those ancient Greek boys kicked arse (as well as doing some other less seemly things with it). :D
