View Full Version : Poor Frank

Former world heavyweight boxing champion Frank Bruno has been taken for treatment to a psychiatric hospital, report British media.

According to the reports, the 41-year-old divorced father-of-three was taken from his home in Brentwood, in Essex, near London, by paramedics to a local hospital on Monday.

An Essex police spokesman said they had attended an address in Brentwood earlier in the day and helped a man to hospital.

The former champion was recently reported to have been seeking help for depression as he struggled to come to terms with life outside the ring and a divorce.

Former world featherweight champion Barry McGuigan, now a TV commentator and pundit, told SkySports TV: "I think in boxing with a lot of fighters they find that retirement leaves a big, gaping hole in their lives and nothing ever replaces what it's like in the ring when you hit the dizzy heights like Frank did.

"Everything after that is very much a disappointment."

In April, Bruno, who has not fought since losing his WBC title to Mike Tyson in Las Vegas in 1996, made an application for the return of his licence, saying he wanted to take on Olympic gold medallist Audley Harrison.

Bruno, who recorded 40 victories in a career spanning 45 fights, reached the pinnacle of his career in 1995 when he outpointed Oliver McCall to claim the WBC heavyweight title after failing in previous bids against Tim Witherspoon, Tyson and fellow Briton Lennox Lewis.

His prolific early career, which featured 21 consecutive knock-outs, meant he was the most talked-about British heavyweight since Henry Cooper while his jovial out-of-ring demeanour made him the darling of the British sporting public.

But in recent years he has largely faded from the spotlight, appearances in Christmas pantomimes being a traditional exception.

I'm not an anti-boxing monkey by the way.

Can't beat a bit of hardcore violence.
Especially if Turkish football fans are on the recieving end.

Still amusing to see The Scum retract a headline though....

Early editions "Bonkers Bruno Banged Up"

Later editions "Sad Bruno In Mental Home"

Obviously they realised that they weren't quite in tune with the public on that one.

:censored: surplus :censored: twats :furious:

People suffering with mental illness are deserving of compassion regardless of their personal wealth

Yeah I know, and of course I would never condone such behaviour, but he must have been well on the way to do that in the first place and I'm sure the way he was treated by the press at the time didn't help much :(

I wasn't having a go mate, it's just easy for any of us to condemn people based on what we get from the meeja when actually we know very little about what's really going on.

Lets see : ABA Champion at 18, 45 Pro fights, 40 wins. WBC World Champion

If he had cancer people would be saying "poor Frank", but as it mental illness it's ok to take the p iss. Makes me a little  , but mostly :(

When someone on here is feeling really low because their life is going to the crapper most people are really supportive. Is Frank "fair game" coz he was successful ?

ok, sermon over.

His stats are good, only because of the other lemons he fought. Lets face it, when he came up against real competition, he got beat. And he only won the WBC from the lucky puncher Oliver Mcall. Mcall if I remember cried when he got back into the ring with Lennox Lewis.

Recent reports say that Frank thought he was Frankie Dettori, no offence but a white jockey is the complete opposite to a black heavyweight boxer, so the guy must be a few cans short of a sixpack.

And stop trying to get Arry to comment. :D Huh Huh Huh

Well said. Mental illness isn't something that I would wish on anyone, other than the most deserving paedophiles - but then they are ill any way
