View Full Version : running in after bottom end rebuild
Been told I need to keep below 3000rpm for 500 miles when I **eventually** get my car back. Standard advice, good advice or immaterial?
Have been s13-less for a month...gotta get a turbo fix soon...but 500 miles at 40mph maybe 50.....considering a couple of late night trips round the M25!!
Not heard anyone else talking of such depravity even though lots of big end probs and rebuilds in the forum....

That sound about right, I have heard that the best way to run in a bottom end is to use a lower quality for the first 500 miles, than put you Mobil 1 and such after the 500 miles. The poorer quality oil will allow the rings/bearings to wear in better than high quality oils. Just try to drive off boost, I know it sucks but your engine/wallet will suffer if you don't.

depravity, how about 6 months without my baby due to a blown engine, turbo and rear end smash !!!
Everything comes at once in my house.

FINALLY got my car back from SE on Thursday, had big end bearings ground and new over-sized shells. The man himself 'Pete' told me to keep it below 3000rpm for 100 miles (one hundred) and then after that do as I please. But I been steady for over 200 miles and now beginning to open it up a bit now, good to have it back though !
I saw your car Barry, looks great. SE is even more 'chok-a-block' than last time I went, loads of cars parked on the road outside now, get your orders in early !
James
Only a hundred? Hmmm...sounds better than 500. I'll see how itchy I get to get some boost..but will try to get somewhere near 500 if I can. Presumably you'll be changing oil (and filter?) at some point too?
Cheers
Sorry Olly, sounds like no fun at all! How on earth did you manage all three things at once? Can only imagine something pretty serious...
The longer you can run it "sensibly" below 3,000 revs the better it'll do your engine in the long run.

Hi James
Glad to see ya car is all better now, only 100 miles wow I'd still take it easy for the first 500 or so.
Thanks for the compliments on the car, those boy's sure do get busy.
