They are not only increasing the number of speed cameras / "safety" vans etc. but are going to reduce the tolerances for speeding!

Well, done.

A real winner with the general public (well, those that can pay without causing too much hassle).

:annoyed: HELLO - DOESN'T PUBLIC OPINION COUNT ANYMORE? :annoyed:

Please tell me I am not alone in the opinion that the Police are now not much more than a joke (when they should be highly respected pillors of the community - remember that?)

They're not all bad mate....

The speed camera thing is pi$$ing everyone off, but I can't blame the Police for them all... they don't put the cameras up....(well not your everyday bobby on the street)

I find alot of people who hate the Police have no real reason to hate them... and usually a friend of theirs has had a bad experience a long time ago.

People just seem to hate the Police without even having a valid reason.... a few people have, but they're in the minority....

People just like to hate the Police.....I don't see the point personally... just my opinion of course!

I saw a Plod at out local Tesco's petrol station when I was filling up my Astra on Friday afternoon.

I thought he looked like a tw@, so was glaring evilly at him constantly. I stopped to pick up a bunch of flowers for my girlfriend, then was getting into my car as Plod drove past...

Can you guess what he shouted to gain my respect????

"In the doghouse are we???"

What a twat! Luckily he was already moving, or I'd have done something I regretted.... At least I know he's never bought a woman flowers just for the hell of it... if he's ever had a woman at all! I can see now why policemen only ever marry policewomen - they share the same twattish atitude and general air of 'I'm better than you'.

I've been threatened, sworn at, tailgated closely, bullied and generally victimised by the Ploice for having a fast car and attending car meets...

I have given them the benefit of the doubt time and time again, but I have now seriously lost my last shred of respect for them..

The final straw was being pulled over for going too slowly over speed bumps... The time I was pulled for not speeding in the wet by a copper who was sat 3" off my bumper didn't help either

I've said it before, and it will take a LOT to change my mind:

Courtesy costs nothing.

And I don't care how hacked off they are. "Thank You" "Please" doesn't hurt.

And I am not going to respect them for Being The Police. This is not the 1950's I'm afraid, I personally have no respect for anyone just "because I should". Respect is earnt not given as a matter of course. And until the forces shape up and get their acts in order, then I personally am not going to give them my respect.

On a 1-2-1 basis, perhaps yes. As a conglomeration of individuals? Not at the moment.

One of my mates is going to go into the force (not that I think they'll take him unless they are really desperate), and I can't help but laugh every time he says that he's going to be out there in the squad car or whatever.

Why tarr all coppers with the same brush? There are LOADS of them so you are going to get some twats, it's just that you remember those more. What about the copper that died trying to save a child in a lake a few months ago? Is he a twat????? Don't think his wife and kids would think so.
I have got a few mates who are coppers and let me tell you, its bloody hard work. Public opinion is one of the hardest things they have to overcome, they get abuse from people without ANY reason whatsoever. Like I say, there are some who can warrent this, but again, its these that stick in your mind.
As for speed cameras, they have absolutely nothing to do with them so why have a go at them?

If people started to give them a break then they may have more time to do what they are paid for and what we have a go at them for in the first place!

Their is certainly an element of mis-management - using them to catch speeders, not caring about normal crimes, and what I consider to be the greatest evil of them all.... TARGET MEETING

But, that still doesn't explain the attitudes of individual officers I have encountered. FFS, where in teh police training manual does it tell you to swear at pedestrians??? I demanded and recieved an apology for that, and if I hadn't got one I was going to oficcialy compalin. Plus the threats of violence - a copper threatened to break my windscreen with his stick - again unjustifiably!

I wouldn't pi$$ on a copper if I saw one burning in the street. Damn the lot of them! The only time I ever reported a crime their attitude was 'Here's your crime reference for your insurance, now fook off!'

Well yes Mick (see my above comments).
The copper who died in the lake - did he do this because he was a cop or because he was a humanitarian?

And as for public opinion, yes, but there are reasons for that - ie being ineffectual in so many cases. Sadly :(

I have known a few cops and they are very nice people and get my respect on a 1-2-1. On duty officers... Sorry, I've never ever got on with them. Just my personal experience.

I'm not saying they're not nice people inside, but I've yet to meet a copper who was polite, friendly and helpful while on duty...

I've been overtaken on the M4 by an 'Accident Investigation' cop car travelling in excess of 100mph with no lights on - if our positions were reversed I'd probably be in jail right about now!

And their increasing use of their powers to confiscate cars and destroy them is becoming almost fascist and dictatorial.

I would not even let an off-duty copper in my house, such is my dislike of them.

Yes, I agree, the copper who died probably would have done the same if he wasn't a copper. But you get good/bad in all walks of life, I just didn't think it was fair that all police were made out to be this or that.

I agree with your comments though, its down to personal experience.

Exactly how I wouldlike to feel.... :(

Have you ever been pulled over for driving too slowly, or threatened by a copper for no reason? These things incite quite a lot of feeling, and I'd happily listen to anyone who has anything nice to say about the plod :)

Criminal justice in this country is currently on a very slippery slope, and if we all ignore it things will only get worse. If all we can do is rant over and over again then I think we should, as it raises the issues in peoples minds again and again, and might make people think about how to resolve the problems :)

I would like to respect the Police, but it's not in my power to influence their behaviour. PErhaps any reading this will think carefully about how they present themselves and act in public... If I followed their behaviour to date, I would be a petty, violent and abusive twat... When I am in no way violent or abusive! ;)

IMHO The problem stems from the idea the police have about how the public should treat them.

As an organisation they project this image of 'Respect us cos we're the old bill' - which is the quickest way to wind up a race as mental as the British.

Then at the same time, we get bombarded with 'We're a caring sharing community organisation etc'

Whilst on the flipside there's the 'We're untouchable cos we're plod, got a problem with us? we'll just investigate ourselves thank you very much'

Most peoples experiences are of strange initiatives such as the one implemented in Horsham a while ago....

In an effect to reduce petty fri/sat night crime in the town, they had a period of sending in fleets of riot vans, and just nicking any (and I mean ANY ) male under the age of 30 who wasn't sober and was walking between pubs.... My little bro got picked up with three of his mates whilst they were stood outside a pub waiting for a taxi at 8pm... after two pints... The old bill rolled up. Piled out and started asking questions, pushing and shoving them, then searched them and generally wound them up until one of the lads told them to pi55 off - result? Nicked the lot, in the cells for the night, two got a good kick or two in the back of the wagon then released without charge.

:censored: :censored:

Did it reduce crime? Nope - no crime was, or would have been committed.

Did it look good on the figures? Yep

What did it achieve? Only to alienate four lads, plus mates, plus family, plus witnesses even further.

The Police spend a considerable amount of time telling us what a hard time they get from the public.... Is it any bladdy wonder?

Well .... in fairness I have led a sheltered life when it comes to the police ... all my clashes with them they have always been more than curteous and fair to me.

Been stopped twice for speeding .. one of those times I out ran the Wilshire unmarked Accord type R around the twisties :D ... finally let them catch up .... and they put there blues on and pull me

They were as nice as pie to me on both occasions

spent an hour in Jail due to being reported for breaking into a house at 2 am in the morning ... turns out I was dropping a bag round to a friends house on the way home from the pub

So nothing excessive I'll agree but I have never experienced a bad police officer ....... They even let me keep my licence for a couple of days over the 7 day handing in period, so I could do my bike test after I got stopped speeding.

Going on this, I can only assume that either you bring it on your self ...... Which I know you will all deny ... which leads me to my second theory ... I am just damned lucky to have got the 4 or 5 officers out of (I guess) 200,000 that are good blokes.

I guess until someone screws me over .. I will rightly defend them

I can say quite happily that I don't bring it on myself. I particularly didn't like being tailgated through a 30 zone in the wet by a copper, who pulled me over and lectured me about stopping distances. To say the least I was rude and discorteous to him, but as I'd done nothing wrong he couldn't nick me, and believe me he wanted to by the time I'd finished laying into him!

Maybe I'm unlucky, maybe there are decent coppers out there, but it only takes the actions of one to affect my opinion of the force as a whole... Now imagine you've met, say, 6 bad coppers. What are you going to think the rest are like?

I don't claim to have any any answers, but it seems even young kids these days don't have any respect for them. If they want to reduce this decline in respect, they need to start being a little more polite, but at the same time strict to those who have done anything illegal. I imagine it is one of the hardest jobs going, but if soem coppers aren;t up to the mark they should be shown the door - not kept on purely because nobody else wants the job! It seems like a vicious circle to me... keep bad coppers because nobody wants the job - nobody wants the job because it's hard - bad coppers make it hard for the rest.

Some very good points.... I certainly don't have any hatred towards any other groups of people! I think the reason I hate the Police is purely because they can and do threaten you with this, that and the other for no reason. They love to scare you into doing what they want, in my experience at least. If you stand up to them it can cut them down to size very quickly - but only if you have done nothing wrong. I seem to have met only the bullies, and I HATE bullies... weak cowardly individuals they are... Threatening me with violence and arrest for having done nothing illegal. I believe that is justification for a small ammount of dislike. To say I discriminate against them is a valid point (but I have my reasons as detailed)... To say they discriminate against me would also be a valid point, only they have no excuse IMHO.

If I was a policeman I wouldn't like to read this thread, and yes it is offensive, but that doesn't excuse the behaviour displayed towards me on numerous occasions. I have been openly offensive to a number of officers who have shown me no respect, threatened me, or pulled me for no valid reason. I will do so again so long as I have done nothing wrong.

EDIT: I'm only ever offensive once I've been threatened/insulted/wrongly accused with no evidence first.

It would only take one polite copper to change my viewpoint... but to date I've met none :(

Anyway, I'm fully angered-out, and am going home to chill :)

Thank goodness for that, JB!

To all those that have said this is a negative thread etc. I have two things to say:-

1) Things don't change unless people vent their objections accordingly

2) Anyone who thinks I have been a tad harsh on our over-worked Police should consider the following; Wait until YOU have to ring Plod for something and see what response you get and (finally) see how you feel when you've been pulled over for bugger-all and they treat you like it's a Nazi interrogation - for absolutely no reason.

Respect? Yeah, ok.........

PS How about JB's Dad who eased through a set of red traffic lights and pulled over to allow a Plod car on an emergency to get through - and then they came round later and booked him for it!!

Still, they do a great job..........
