It is, but the M Roadster and Coupe only put out 315 BHP.

The E46 M3 engine is 343 BHP.
The M Roadster/Coupe was originally launched with a 321 BHP version of the same engine.
This was upped to 325 BHP in March 2001.

Where?
Are you sure that's not the 2.8 version.
The 3.2 engine has always output around 320 BHP for the M coupe/roadster.

From www.bmw.com

236KW equates to 316BHP

Correction tho, it was the US version that started with 240, and then was upped... My mistake.

However, Other sources say it has the 321BHP M3 Engine... And there also sources that say the Coupe and Roadster started out with the E36 3.0 M3 Engine at 280 BHP.

So who the feck is correct

I'm pretty sure the UK versions of the M coupe and roadster came out with the current E46 M3 3.2l engine.
Prior to this, the biggest engine available was the 2.8.

http://www.ita.as/M_Roadster/bmw_m_roadster_history.htm (This) is a pretty good write up of the history of the M coupe/roadster.

M coupe put out the full 321bhp,

Then when the new shape M3 came out it was revised to 325bhp!

No it was deffo from the E36. And according to www.bmw.com, it is either 236KW or 239KW which equate to 316hp and 320hp.

Go figure. :)
