Bye bye Aerodeck, hello ATR!

The sale was pretty fun. The seller was a Motorsports Engineer at the Mercedes F1 Engine Plant, so we got to have a poke around after the sale was handled :D

The car needs a bit of exterior TLC. The lip needs painting, and there is a small key mark on the passenger side which I will fill. The wheels also need refurbing, although it may be easier just to find a set in better condition.

There's a slight knocking from the rear which I suspect is a knackered bush or droplink. I also plan to dechrome (colour match) the grill and fit a facelift red H badge.

Other than that, the project will be a slow burner (more of a restoration), as the S14a takes priority!

Anyone need a cheap VTi Aerodeck? :wack:

Always had a soft spot for these ever since I saw the atr owners club hammering around castle Combe at japfest a few years back! Underrated car IMO. lovely seats too!

Ryan, the Aerodeck needs a bit of work to put it back on the road, but I'll be letting it go for very cheap!

It'll need Tax and MOT (currently sorn), and to get the MOT I think it'll need new brakes and a couple of new tyres. I'm also unsure how good it is on the emmissions front. I got Ali to replace the lambda which should see it right, but I couldn't be 100% certain. Also the bonnet cable has become loose, so opening the bonnet is a nightmare.

Other than that I think its a good car! It never let me down.

Doc, it is indeed pretty quick! This is the first car where Vtec has actually impressed me, and the entry/exit speeds are fun to say the least :D

Gary, no monies for H2B :(

He's very mechanically minded mate so I'm certain he'd be interested as he'd be able to do the remedial work himself. Let me know either way buddy :)

ATR looks great, I so need a cooler daily :)

The interior looks lovely, is it comfortable over a longer drive?

I've heard great things about ATR's, would be good to hear how you get on with it. Been looking at them recently myself, work may be going for a car allowance instead of company car, if so one of these may be on the cards! :)

First impressions are very good mate. I'd definitely say comfortable for longer journeys, although not the most frugal if you're doing a lot of driving. Supposedly it'll get into the 30s for long runs, but around town its mid 20s. Going to get Ali@Unit18 to give it a health check (hopefully this weekend if he's available), and then I can put it through its paces to form a proper opinion.

Very comfortable distance car, we took Karens ATR to the Ring for the first time in May.

The longest single journey was the 220 miles between Rotterdam and Nur which we obviously did twice. The seats and the driving position are both superb, minimal road noise, lots of room in the cabin and in the boot too.

The ATR is a great cruiser, an excellent car to travel in and then when we arrived we changed nothing and started racking up sub 10 minute laps.

We covered a total of 910 miles and including the laps the ATR returned 33mpg.

It's one of those few cars that does the lot for me, ticks all the boxes.

Living in Wales, I'm sure the ATR would be a lot of fun.

Took the car to Unit18 for a quick once over before Ali gives it a service next week.

It's sounding a bit tappety so it'll be the usual service + valve clearances. The exhaust has a slight blow at one of the joins. Must resist buying an aftermarket system.

 how can you even consider an x5?! Darn chelsea tractors. Only thing they're good for is lining oil sheik's pockets. And looking too big and pointless in a "I couldn't afford a Range Rover but consider myself too good to buy a Warrior/Hi-lux etc" way :p

Because they're a big comfy cruiser, I want something totally different to the s14.

Hilux, warrior etc are no use to me really and to be fair they're both about the same price as an X5 these days....... oh and I cant afford a Range Rover :D

All my mates have Honda's, My bro's SIR2 is currently being rebuilt, there's a EK4 another EG6,a EM1,a DC2 and a EP3, I guess that's why I want one!!

I had a EG 1.5lsi back in the day but one day I'll have a proper one (VTEC+LSD) :smitten:

so much fun and mega reliable too. there is one locally to me who has slightly dropped the suspension and painted the wheels black and it looks really good

I love this car, I really really do.

It's just had a full service and the valve clearances done, and now its feeling very nice to drive. It's actually faster than I expected, which is nice. The crossover is nice and strong, and it revs all the way to God knows.

People complained about the midrange torque, but I find it fine to cruise around in. The ATR feels like the perfect upgrade from the Aerodeck VTi.

Part of the exhaust system has turned to dust, so thats the next port of call. Going to get one fabbed up, as off the shelf systems are £500+! (Modifying out of necessity doesn't count as modifying, right?! :wack:).

Good thing you mention that actually. Just checked through 2 million pages of history, and found the cambelt done at 75K. It's now at 120K, so should probably get that done sooner rather than later! I'll drop the last owner an email to see if he did it at any point between 100 and 120K.

Out of interest Quail what was the cost of the valve clearance check?

Should probably get that done on the DC2 seeing as it's knocking on the door of 120k miles now, although it shows no sign of anything being amiss.

do it yourself - tis v. easy on the hondas. a set of £10 feeler gauges and you can do it with a flat screwdriver and (from memory) a 10mm spanner.

Over the course of the last 2 weeks I've achieved ~29MPG with mixed driving. A few long runs, lots of short runs, and the odd semi-conservative blat. I'm pretty happy with that! If I filled it up and went for a big long run I'm sure I'd hit mid 30s quite comfortably.

Got the new cambelt sitting infront of me. Will call up Vtec direct tomorrow to order a new auto tensioner and balance belt.

Just returned from our second Nur trip.

We completed a total of 1,270 miles this time which included 9 Ring laps, a hard 20min session at the GP Strecke circuit and a full track day at Spa Francorchamps.

Car was once again brilliant and did not miss a beat.

What's your mileage now, Gary?

I was giving it some beans on the back roads between Oxford and MK yesterday. It's difficult to get acquainted with the true handling around MK.

Its strange, past a certain point the car feels somewhat oversteery (without lifting off). Not sure if thats tired suspension, or characteristic of the car? I suspect my rear ARB needs attention anyway.

It also pivots between corners beautifully, although I'm still learning how to get it quickly around tighter corners without understeer. The nose does feel heavy.

Si

Urf, love these so much, want.
Need to check the valve clearances on our teg as it's a bit tappety - also seems to be chomping fuel at an alarming rate, but I guess that's soemthing else :wack:

If only it was a hatch... Considering a Megane 225 as an almost kind of slightly 5 door hatchy equivalent, going to try and drive both at some point to put my mind at ease. Will reply to your PM soon, could provide an opportunity... ;) :D

Quail

Hauling 2 bikes, trips to the tip, wheels, etc - it's invaluable - The other week we were down at my parents and bought an armchair without thinking about how to get it home :wack: Luckily it went straight in the back of the 'teg with a bit of interior moving.

We're currently doing a fair bit of work on our house, and half of the things we're doing seem to involve moving large things like furniture and building supplies, that wouldn't go in a saloon :(

Mileage is now at 69,600 so not even run in yet :)

The guy who came with us in his T reg ATR clicked over to 200,000 miles a few days before we set out.

Our ATR has stock 11 year old suspension and feels good but seen from the outside it leans like a boat. The T reg has a Bilstein setup and can corner a little better.

I find with the ATR handling I need to enter really tight corners slower than I thought I would and let the suspension settle. Then, when I have a line I know I can get round with let the LSD pull me through and power the car out of the corner.

This makes me happy :D.

Did you ever get gearbox problems? Mines had the synchros done (twice), but the thought is always at the back of my mind. Previous owner had a theory about block changing from the top of third to fifth putting unnecessary strain on the 5th gear synchro.

m.d.
09-10-2011, 22:57
Yeah mine did end up really struggling to go into reverse and when it went in you had to hold it there. Apparently really common on that engine.

I just ignored it and held it in reverse. Didn't really bother me though.

Oh yeah and before I re set the valve clearances. And gave it a service. I took it for a rolling road session and it still made 180bhp. That was with all the stock exhaust and an old air filter too.

It definitely went a little better once I'd serviced it and done an ecu reset. I made a huge air box and fitted my s13s apexi filter to it. Properly sings when on vtec like that. Wish I'd never sold it really.
