View Full Version : The Apex Tomei S14 Monster
Just a liiiiiiiiiitle bit of a slow burner this one :wack: Came off the road late 2004, still under construction  Whilst this things being put together Ive built:
500bhp S13
400bhp S14 drift car
598bhp Skyline
Rebuilt above Skyline with 530bhp V8
Rebuilt the above Skyline from a bare shell again with a 598bhp V8
330bhp superb track weapon Impreza STi6
390bhp V8 S14
Supermoto Honda CRF450R
Supermoto Husaberg 650
Never mind, we have more progress, woohoo! Read the full build thread here (http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=267612).
You really need to read the build thread to understand this car but brief spec includes Tomei 2.2 Phase 4 engine, T78, Quaiffe 6 speed sequential box, OS Giken triple plate clutch, OS Giken LSD, fully seamwelded and T45 caged shell, Motec M800, race wiring loom, Ikeya Formula lower arms and rod ends, fully rose jointed, there isnt a single bush on the car. Even the hub bushes have been replaced with bearings.
Its currently having a full aero pack built for it. The pack was designed by an aero consultant and author of multiple aero publications
Should be pretty quick on track.
Ignore the wheels, theyre just for it to roll on.

Just something I've noticed, without a vented bonnet and having the flat floor are you not going to run into cooling issues as you will struggle for airflow out of the engine bay? Probably already considered and sorted, I'm just curious/nosey :)
Well spotted.
Itll have a big hole cut in the bonnet and a scoop running from the back of the rad up in front of the engine to vent out of the bonnet. Itll also get two vents either side of the engine to help reduce temps.
I have another question for you Bren :).
What are you building it for? Time Attack? Track car for fun? or to dominate the world :D
It was always being built as a toy but one reason the development is taking so long is because we need to keep up with the times. Originally it wasnt going to get an aero pack but without one it wont be particularly fast so it was another added expensive job that had to be done.
If its done in 8 weeks as is the current plan then Ill most probably enter it into TA next year  The problem will be that the car will be far far better than its driver so it wont perform as its capable of doing so. However Id rather set the fooker on fire than let some one else drive it so itll just have to live with a crap pilot! :D
Ill do some serious tuition to become as competitive as possible though :)
I cant for a second justify running it as a pure toy for track days and I couldnt put it into door to door racing with my complete lack of experience as itll get smashed to bits

Gotta love how it's gone from the original idea of a toy to a Time Attack weapon :notworthy.
I'm sure you'll be fine with progressing with the car to improve. Just don't do what I did at Donnington :wack:.
Look forward to seeing it out on track. Give me a shout if you want track coverage to help promote it

Sorry but track coverage?

Having been out with you in the skyline Bren I wouldn't sell yourself so short, you certainly know how to hustle a car around

I did......then I got 'The Stare' and I thought I was in for it lol.

Thats very kind of you but some of the Time Attack teams run pro drivers and Im going to really struggle against the top owner drivers, let alone outright racers :( Ill have a go though :)
Daz,
If you arent tankslapping you arent trying
Now this is a brown trouser moment! Flat in 6th.

Car is looking awesome though Bren
If I were the passenger youd have heard me screaming from your house but that guys as cool as a cucumber

LOL! Thats what I said! Is he actually alive at all? Maybe he's blind? :wack:
Car looking good Bren.
At least Gary lets you take his cars home a bit more often than Ken! ;) LOL :p
Hes not as fond of my cars as Kens as Ken tends to give him lovely juicy work to do where as I just want him to do all the time consuming fiddly crap then he hates
Daz,
If you arent tankslapping you arent trying

Indeed. My next lap was a far better line. I can't wait to do some more track days. I enjoyed those sessions far too much.
That scooby video is crazy. Seen it before and just can't imagine staying that calm throughout that lol.

Updates!!
That video is like going out with the audi club guys expect there is other road users :O
The aero pack is now all done and the rear wing is paid for and nearly finished. We are slowly going through all the small time consuming crap jobs but its getting there. Even fitting the door handles turned into a PITA. The rods connecting the handles to the lock mechanism were missing, we ordered them from Nissan but Nissan can only suppy one side, we ordered in full rod sets from a breaker but the ones we needed were missing etc.
We finally got the rods sorted to find that the handles fouled on the aluminium window frames so the doors had to be dismantled, the frames altered and the whole thing reassembled.
We went to install the headlights to find they fouled on the ducting jointing the intercooler to the radiator so it all had to be dismantled, we had to get some more aluminium sheet in and refabricate.
The bonnet wasnt closing properly on the rad vent so this had to be reworked.
And so on. Its a proper 'mare but progress is still being made :)

Cool, I'm glad you're persevering with it :)
No choice now. I did have a serious party interested in the engine, fuel and transmission set up for more than £20k but that still leaves me with a massive loss on the rest of the car. The shell is the real killer, theres some serious money invested in it and I wont be able to recoup a fraction of whats been spent. So on we go. Ive just about spent all the money that needs to be spent, just a fire system, steering wheel and seat to buy now and thats nearly every part bought. Just need to finish bolting them together :)
Q; Why do we not see 200 in any form of GT racing, any logical reson!!!
There is one guy, his S14 also has a flat bottom, can't remember where the pics are tho.
How comes there's no bits venting the brake discs Bren? Do they not need it?
Seems like the Aero package is set to channel all the air around the car, not giving much to the brakes. I don't know anything about aerodynamics or brakes however :wack:, just an observation about the general shape.
Also are there any plans to get the bodykit into general production and release it to the un-washed masses?
It was probably Rich from Rt Autobodies car, the red and black one :)
Hewill be doing some work to the Tomei in a couple of weeks, need to work the front splitter as Im not overly impressed with the way its attached and it needs stiffening up and he will be making the mounts for the rear wing which has now arrived.
All 2 grands worth of it    Pics to follow.
He will also look at finishing the exhaust.

Get a move on! Want to see this finished :D
It is still making progress. Glacial progress granted, but progress nonetheless ;) Drivers seat mounting is sorted, passenger seats nearly sorted, wing will soon be mounted, exhaust will be finished, splitter will be done as it should be done.
If you look at the car now its extremely close to done. This is what it needs, excluding the aero and exhaust work thats already booked in:
Fire extinguisher system installing
Wheels buying and fitting
Install dash board (as int he actual flocked dashboard and also the dash display)
Electric systems mounting (looms done, just need to install switches and fuse box)
Install front screen
Fit a new steering wheel
Buy a suitable seat (all mountings are now sorted ready to bolt a seat in) and install with harness
Sort a filler cap catch
Fit the oil cooler
Fit throttle body
Sort a throttle cable of some sort
Urm......I think thats about it.

Sorry, missed the brake question. No, theres no brake ducting at the moment. It will need some at some point. At some point it also needs the floor and splitter remaking in carbon or at least something lighter than ply. It also wants the rear splitter remaking in something lighter than alu.
The brakes need swapping out to the latsets design as does the suspension.
The turbo wants swapping for something more modern.
The bonnet wants swapping for a carbon skin rather than a normal lightweight bonnet. The doors are light but could be lighter, they need attention.
It needs a lot more work to get it spot on but bollocks, the fooker just needs to work first. Ill sort the changes after its able to turn a wheel under its own steam!
The body kit is a Vertex Ridge widebody, theyre available now :)
It is still making progress. Glacial progress granted, but progress nonetheless ;)
Ready for TOTB?? :sxoc::cool::D:D
 It possibly could be but Im not fussed about entering TOTB in it so Im certainly not rushing the car to be there. The Skyline could enter, its sat here ready to go doing not a lot.
