I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro on my friends computer. I've formatted the hard drive and tried to start the pc with the XP disc in the cd ROM drive. I thought it just booted from the cd but I keep getting a Non System Disk Error.
It also won't allow me to run setup from DOS. I run Windows ME and have successfully reinstalled this operating system using the setup file from DOS. Ithought XP was going to be easier!!
I'm booting with CD ROM Boot Up enabled by the way.

Install ME, then insert XP disk and run the setup to upgrade.

It should work - the normal cause of a non-booting XP disc is an incorrect "copy"

It won't let you run the setup program from DOS as it's a windows executable. Run 'winnt32.exe' (I think that's the name, I'm trying to remember off the top of my head) in the 'i386' directory of the CD instead.
It will probably complain that you don't have smart drive installed, it just means it will take a while to install :(
It's strange that it didn't boot from the CD
Cheers

I was going to ask if you had set the CD to boot before the HDD in the bios but I guess you have?

Thanks guys. I tried to install ME and setup started . I then got a message saying this version of ME wouldn't run on the PC. I've got a OEM version (Dell) of ME and it must restrict what PC's it'll install on.
I've downloaded the XP boot disk and I'll give it a go.
And yes Russ the XP is a 'ahem' back up. Works fine on another mates PC though.
