Nun habe ich endlich die BMW Reihen mit dieser 530d Touring verbunden.

:wack:

Right this is yet another Bimmer project thread :D so if it bores you and you find it uninspirational best you go make a cup of tea

Right, picked this up on Tuesday, its a late 2003 530d Sport Touring Auto in Sterling Grey. quite a rare colour as most seem to be silver or black :wack: Has grey leather, full M sport kit (front bumper, rear bumper, 17" parallels, steering wheel, sill plates. suspension), communications package (sat nav/tv and mobile phone), parking sensors and DSC.

As its a facelift its the 193bhp version which also has 300 torques :)

Some pics

Plans :D

Remap - Courtesy of AP Tuning to take it to around 220bhp and 350 torques
HID's - headlights are on par with a 14a :wack:
LED Angel eyes to match the HIDs
Black grills
Some decent audio - For a premium car the audio is seriously lacking :( Needs some decent front speakers and then maybe a sub in the rear. i have seen some nice stealthy installs that dont loose you any load space so that will be ideal, like this

http://i482.photobucket.com/albums/rr183/DennisCooper/BMW%20Products/E39%20Touring%20Stealth%20JL%20Subwoofer/DSC02600.jpg

Problem is I am stuck with the standard tuner/amp because of the sat nav etc so have seen on the forum you can bust the unit open and solder in some RCA's for an amp :D so will look at tackling that

First job though is a service so will hopefully get that done over the weekend :)

DLS speakers, either components or 2-ways

Awesome sounds for not a lot of money, there is a stockist in Thorpe Bay - alarming entertainment (hifikid1 on eBay)

They will need to be amped though

Was going to look at infinity components but will have a butchers at those.

MEL
10-06-2011, 15:15
I have always found infinity stuff to be quite tinny and not offer that much depth, the dls stuff is much fuller and offers better base. Rainbow speakers are very similar to dls in sound staging and price iirc :)

I got dls in the 13, have a listen at the next HWH

Nothing too exciting but i started on the service today plus i thought i would look at the swirl flaps and think about removing them.

Old filter against the nice new one :wack:

http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/247088_180770028647623_100001438828659_495757_5475 834_n.jpg

New filter in place, i must admit its a strange setup

http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/253487_180771215314171_100001438828659_495765_7657 490_n.jpg

Then i started to take the manifold off. Not a particularly simple job as the back of it is slightly under the bulkhead  but with a bit of perserverance i got it off

http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/251742_180771275314165_100001438828659_495767_5404 318_n.jpg

You can see the swirl flaps in the top ports

What you are left with once you take it out

http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/259941_180771405314152_100001438828659_495770_7860 146_n.jpg

and the removed flap.

I need to pop to PMW in Chelmsford (local independant BMW specialist) to get the blanks tomorrow in order to finsh the job. Bit of luck i checked as one was loose  and as they are metal they can make a bit of a mess of your engine :wack:

So anyone with a M57 lump or even the M47 (2.0 TD) i would get this done

Mark
14-06-2011, 18:56
Finished it off today. Visited PMW (who BTW seem like top blokes) to get the bungs and the guy asked when the crankcase filter was last done. I stared blankly at him and explained i had only had the car a week :D He said the OE filter was a foam one that gets clogged which can fook the turbo :( BMW released a vortex one that doesnt as an upgrade so I grabbed one of those as well just in case (was only £20)

So did that first and indeed it had the old foam filter (or loo roll as they call it on the BMW forums :wack:)

old filter

http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/252520_181022075289085_100001438828659_496808_2226 319_n.jpg

New vortex one

Crankcase housing read for new filter

http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/249987_181022218622404_100001438828659_496811_2822 181_n.jpg

filter fitted

http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/252568_181022288622397_100001438828659_496812_8120 112_n.jpg

Took the manifold into work and gave it a soak in the wash tanks (chemical tank first and then the hot wash spinner :D) which shifted most of the gunky shit

This is one of the blanking plugs

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/248362_181022355289057_100001438828659_496813_3913 456_n.jpg

All fitted in the manifold

http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/250425_181022511955708_100001438828659_496815_4069 953_n.jpg

Before the manifold went back on I thought it would be a good idea to clean out the EGR valve, I wasnt wrong :wack:

http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/253411_181022655289027_100001438828659_496817_3503 309_n.jpg

after a bit of clean, much better :)

http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/260091_181022718622354_100001438828659_496819_4851 951_n.jpg

Reading the forums you can do a 'semi bypass' of the EGR which is basically remove the vac pipe so it never opens. Consider it done :D

Manifold back in place

http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/252476_181022825289010_100001438828659_496820_5632 25_n.jpg

and all done

http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/254496_181022888622337_100001438828659_496822_3592 319_n.jpg

Other people report with the egr bypass and deflapped manifold the car spools up quicker and is more responsive but I will see later tonight when i pop out in it :)

Car has a bit more response low down so i now dont need to jab the loud pedal as hard when pulling away from junctions etc. Hopefully i can get it remapped before the weekender :D

Also looking at K&N filters :D

Also discovering nice little touches all the time  for instance if you have the ignition off and the door open then flash the lights it will turn the headlights on for around 30 secs to light your path in the dark :D

Yes, I discovered the massively oversized socket on the top of the filter just the other day. Who on earth keeps a 36mm socket in a DIY set? :smash:

Bloody BMW and their inconsiderate try to get you into the dealership to maintain SH bullshit :D

Take it you bought the ODB cable for it as well then Mark?

Mark
15-06-2011, 17:43
Nope, you reset the lights with the trip reset button on the E39 :D

I already had the socket as its the same on the Mondeo lol

arry
15-06-2011, 17:47
Do you? Do you know if it's the same on the E46? I've just oil serviced mine so I may as well reset the computer.

That said not that it matters - it'll only really need resetting if it starts coming up with annoying "you must get me serviced now mofo" type messages

Mark
15-06-2011, 17:55
Quite possibly, try this

Press and hold trip meter button down and turn ignitiion key to accesory position.
- Hold until you see 'reset'.
- Release and immediately press and hold again for 5 seconds, until 'reset' flashes.
- Release and press again.

Crap, its broken :(

Driving home from work I realised although the AC was on low I was still sweating. Oh the fans not working  The control unit was working (i.e i could change fan speed or temp) but no air blowing out from anywhere.

Bit of research when i got home pointed to the 'hedgehog' which seems to be the BMW equivelent of the resitor card in Nissans.

So off the GSF in the morning to buy a new one and hope it fixes it :wack: I hotwired the blower motor and thats working so fingers crossed

Nope, how do you do that?

New hedgehog in and all working

Went to GSF and they do 2, a cheap chinese jobby for around £35 or a german OE spec on for £69, I went for the latter

Blower now working again

Also worked out how to pair up my phone to the onboard bluetooth :D so now have hands free. It uses the car stereo so is crystal clear and better than those handsfree kit speakers :thumbs:

LED angle eyes turned up today and I have a HID kit on order which hopefully will be here before the weekender

Straight after the weekender the car will be going into PMW Ltd for an Evotune remap, transmission software update and tranmission and diff fluid replacement.

All i can say is ching ching :wack:

If it's the same as mine - easy. Key in ign up to notch 1. Wait ten seconds. Turn back to 0. Wait ten seconds. Then straight to 3 to start the engine.

Throttle learns your driving style - this resets the throttle to factory spec, so it'll likely be more instant if you've had a previous owners who's a bit ponderous :wack:

Got to repair the headlights though as both have broken adjusters (another common fault :wack:) and they just wobble about in their housings  You need to take the headlight part to change them but it appear 2003 cars use a different resin which cannot be softened so it looks like i need to cut into the backs to change them :annoyed:

I hope there not as expensive as the e46 ones.

I managed to get a pair for £150 (which is a bargain) and then stuck one on eBay and it did £160 :wack:

No where near, loads on ebay for £30 each, just blue, black or silver. Might do what arry said and get a silver one and spray the case.

M5 ones are £500 a pair though :wack:

Yup tell me bout it. I have genuine E46 M3 ones.

But got them with the profit from selling 3 MSport ones :D

That sucks. Glad it was only a small amount of damage

Some really nice touches here. Love the badges and grills. Did you change all of the badges on the wheels as well?
