It's been dotted about this forum in other threads randomly but here it has it's own.

My girlfriend Vicky wanted her own track or drift car. Something as a side project. Her Step Brother (Mike@TDSW) is pretty shit hot and she wanted to take the oppourtunity to goto some of the days and get some pointers and get started. Personally I think she's a tad nervous as she's only had a go at Westonzoyland which still has a sprint circuit and still hasnt had the oppourtunity of just sitting in a play pen area. Even though it's not a drift day, it gave her a chance to see what happens if/when the car stepped out.

That aside, onto the car. We didnt go looking for an E30, it just came up under budget (£350 with MOT for a 325i cant be bad). I felt abit guilty abusing it for drifting after I stumbled across some pictures of it online from a previous owner in it's glory days but it already had what we wanted from it:

E30 325i SE 4 door - Black
158k Miles with cam belt change.
E36 shorter steering rack
Oil cooler from a E34
Welded 318 diff
Cut Springs
No interior trims apart bucket seat, top dash and standard passenger seat
Original BBS 15" Alloys (No caps).

Everything worked on it apart from the left indicators. Spent hours looking into it but gave up. Spoke to the seller and the MOT was a tad vague so when I said it was a drift car for her and we couldnt car about the condition of it as long as it would start up and not overheat on a drift day he went round the car showing me the major issues. They were rubber bushes, large rusty holes and a blown exhaust. Mechanically it was sound.

Didnt look in bad shape!

Her first go at drifting didnt go well. We both share the car but it is mainly for her to practice. The pedals had been bent so the clutch was right up against the brake pedal (I assume for/by a previous owner). After a fish tale she caught the clutch instead of the brakes and rolled into a tree at 20-30mph. She was fine but the car was fairly buggered.

Thankfully none of the pipework was damaged. It was all cosmetic. So we pulled the metal arch away from the wheel so we could still get it on full lock. We also notieced the engine has ripped the rubber subframe bushes it sits on and was leaning up against the radiator. So we pulled that back and into place so it sat ontop of the bushes again. TBH it started then, drove and we carried on for the day.

I went to a scrapyard and paid £50 for an entire front end of panels and large section of chassis leg from a white E30 318 touring. Had a friend come over and weld it up for me, also taught me the basics of welding and and I had a go at it too. Came up alright. Everything lined up well and I painted the chassis leg black. The car was ready for another go at an event.

And sorted for the moment.

Stocked up on tyres and got rid of some old ones for the entire fleet:

Then onto the event: Admittedly a few of us had a go aswell!

Another day done and her confidence has grown. But still wants to do a proper drift day. I think DWYB will be the best idea but it's so far to travel. Will do it eventually. The Pembrey days dont have a practice area I dont think so even though she can drift, she still cant just sit in and try donuts etc.

The car is looking a little 2 tone at the moment, so may address the colour scheme shortly. The diff has started to leak and I still need a couple of bushes to stop it knocking when driving, but for what it is and what we paid, we are getting our moneys worth.

Cool. As for engine stuff, this needs a new starter, diff still leaks and some rubber engine bushes. Oh and an oil change! TBH it's not going to get much else.

Ahh, you mentioned that aaages ago mate. I forgot to get in touch. The SW-PC Forum organise a Sprint Event once a month at Westonzoyland. It is strictly advertised as a sprint. But if the back end is lairy and you have trouble controlling your rear wheel drive car then thats up to you :P There were 5 cars who had difficulty driving around in their rwd cars last time and approx 7 other cars (FWD and 4wd). £30 for the day. Register interest on the forum. Well worth the money. 7:30am start. Sighting lap at 8 am and run all day until 2pm. ONE car at a time around the circuit. It is tight in places as it is a sprint event, so it's got a mix of really tight corners and big sweeping ones.

Cant wait to get my Mk1 XR2 finished and take that around it. Local too.

Next event is last weekend of the month iirc.
