Hi folks.

Well I've pulled my finger out and got myself membership of SXOC so I won't be loading up ekjim's Anglia project with my posts.

An idea spawned a bit over a year ago to modify my classic 1967 Alfa GT stepnose into the car I alway have wanted it to be. Pretty classic lines but something interesting to make it go faster. There have been many transplant projects including twin sparks, V6 etc. To get any real power you have to spend big bucks and the gearbox is the weakest link. Anyhow I stumbled across a transplant that a Greek fellow living in Austrailia had done (SR20DET into a 1973 bertone). Everything looked so right under the bonnet and there was a tentative link between Nissan and Alfa (Alfa Arna was basically a joint Alfa / Nissan project) so that maintains the heritage link

Any how thats the background and my plan was to do the full conversion for under £2k. Well that went out of the window but more on that later. At last years Montee Historique in Laon France I was chatting to one of the guys from PPC mag and after a few beers made the ambitious claim that I would return in 2011 in my turbo Alfa. hmmm

So onto the pics.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TVnHBp-nM3I/AAAAAAAAGas/1UhL4neV1tA/s640/DSCF4631.JPG

Already done quite a few modifications including uprated suspension, LSD rear axle and new wheels. Off to Peterborough to buy the donor a late S14 with a big battle scar from losing it in the snow. I had done a bit of research on SXOC and had my mechanic mate Tom with me and the car whilst cosmetically a bit sad ran well with no knocks or rattles.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TVnHLK6l5tI/AAAAAAAAGbg/aBw0hgKyiyc/s640/DSCF5627.JPG

Next Tom and I pull the engine out of each car.

Engines look very similar in dimensions

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TVnO9eMNpQI/AAAAAAAAG3g/p5kI_seGWo0/s640/DSCF6601.JPG

I was aware that the transmission tunnel would be way too narrow for the Alfa box and so I would need to have it remade.

One of my key objectives was to be sympathetic with the conversion and not destroy the car. Whilst it may be modified there is no reason that some day in the future the owner (whether it is me or not) could put the car back to original if they wanted to.

Dropping the engine into the bay was the first time I knew for sure that it would fit without any major chopping.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TVnPBhS_YRI/AAAAAAAAG30/mC-U1rmCees/s640/DSCF6606.JPG

Amazingly it landed straight onto the original mounts.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TVnO_yi-SWI/AAAAAAAAG3s/1yoMobQ7cBo/s640/DSCF6604.JPG

Good news!! Only the transmission tunnel to modify. 1mm cutting disks meant removal of the tunnel was very neat and all in one piece which will go up into the attic.

I was going to have a go at making the new tunnel myself but Ed (the son of a friend of a friend) was looking for some work and was really enthusiatic over the project. Ed set to work making hoops to provide the template for a nice round tunnel.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TVnPLqsMWZI/AAAAAAAAG4g/JW3nG9FAFEo/s640/DSCF6617.JPG

Ed took away the hoop template to get fabricating while I got on with other jobs.

I thought I might cause a bit of division.

V6 is a big heavy motor and involves lots of chopping and going more than 250hp gets expensive again. I agree an SR20 does not sound like a raspy Alfa Twink (I will miss that a bit).

it's just that one of the biggest parts of the alfa soul is the engine and the noise. even old alfa spiders and the alfasud sound awesome. there had to be a better option than the sr imho.

the project itself is awesome and i would've hated not to see it had you gone down the non nissan route for an engine but i can't help but feel the poor little car will lose part of it's appeal with a modern 4 pot turbo sewing machine beating away

As much as I'm a big fan of classic alfa'a and I love sr's, some of the guys are kinda right... Your removing the soul from your alfa.

But you shouldn't be transplanting the engine, you should be refining it!

you get my point though.

To be fair, putting a different engine in an S-body is fine as the car is never going to be a pretty classic like that alfa.

It's cool putting a modern engine in the OP's car but I think the SR is a terrible choice purely for the noise factor.

I do understand that people feel that way about keeping it's engine but, for me, i'm not really bothered. I'm not trying to offend anyone though it's just my opinion.

For me it's how a complete car makes you feel that counts, whether it has a standard engine or not makes no odds. The twink could be placed in say a caterfield chassis and give that car some 'soul'

[flame suit] With the right exhaust and induction, an SR can sound pretty good, provided it doesn't have VVT rattle - but that's only an issue when first started anyway [/flame suit]

Indeed.
We are back to the hate of the SR because of noise, i just dont get it...
Sr's aint the nicest noise out there but loads of so called "fruity" engines that make a supposedly nice noise all sound the same to me. Its only when you get to proper big stuff like astons and all that where you can appreciate a good rumble.

I am more interested in the way it moves the 4 wheels down the road, SR's boot the arse of most things in this regard.

Some interesting coments on retaining the originality of the car. I thought long and hard before doing the conversion. The Alfa engine that I pulled out was a tuned 2ltr (original was a 1.6Ltr).

The noise it makes will be different but not unpleasant.

Swapping over to fuel injection required some modifications to the tank but on the basis that many of the old Alfa suffered floor flex and cracking the preferred route was to fit a tank between the turrents. Also reduces the risk of a firey experience should I get rear ended.

As it was
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TVnPXUg1zTI/AAAAAAAAG5Y/HgbwZnglscY/s640/DSCF6634.JPG

Remove the tank and cut the top off

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TVnPZVL0Y2I/AAAAAAAAG5g/PCHicJwrK68/s640/DSCF6636.JPG

A bit of paint and sealant and it becomes the boot floor

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TVnQCOLYxJI/AAAAAAAAG8s/HSg-g9_82v8/s640/DSCF6931.JPG

Fits okay
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TVnPewwW7CI/AAAAAAAAG6A/GU7A1niF7X4/s640/DSCF6643.JPG

then send the mock up to Bryn at Allyfab to make me a baffled tank with a swirl pot built in.

A couple of weeks later Bryn sends me through the tank. The guy is a total god when it comes to Ali welding and tank fabrication

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TVnPj-SJ12I/AAAAAAAAG6Y/gCxrk3mjEOw/s640/DSCF6659.JPG

Really happy with the tank. Fits perfectly! The original Alfa sender unit will allow me to keep the original guages.

Steering link needed modification/fabrication to clear the bellhousing. A job I also gave Ed and his dad as it is a little mission critical.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TVnPltyKWUI/AAAAAAAAG6g/7xPPX4Tjk-M/s640/DSCF6668.JPG

Boosting the Alfa twink has been done lots but the gearbox is near its limits at 180hp and expensive to rebuild. The rear axle is good for nearly 300hp apparently though so an uprated prop connected to it should be fine.

I usually like originality in a car, especially one as classic as this. However, the SR has got to be a much better engine than the one coming out and it will transform the car entirely. If the rest of the project, as a whole, is done sympathetically, it will be the tits. A bit of under bonnet insulation and a decent exhaust (I'm thinking along the lines of the twin exit sensible) would sort the rattly sound issues of the SR out no problem.

If a diesel engine wasn't more expensive than my whole s13, I probably would have already done it.

And there is at least one CA powered s14a in the world, but I have no idea where it is.
And a VQ35DET powered 205 in France (for drag races ... it replaced the 2jz which was in it before).

As mentioned previously the Nissan motor dropped stright onto the existing mounting points. So I ordered some new uprated competition mounts from Classic Alfa (basically stiffer rubber) and fabricated mounts combining part Nissan and Part Alfa from 3mm steel plate.

It did not take long to realise that using a top mount would be simpler than a bottom mount turbo due to space restrictions. I could have chopped the inner wings about but I want to preserve the car as much as possible.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TVnPgQ6bhEI/AAAAAAAAG6I/2LS7VdirlUE/s640/DSCF6645.JPG

The manifold flange is for a T3 rather than the T28 so I bought a T2 flange put the stainless wire in the mig and after some cutting and welding had a new flange to accept the T28.

After spending two days scaping and burning off old soundproofing I could lay down some etch promer.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TVnPs1EIJEI/AAAAAAAAG7A/ILLQVTQySlA/s640/DSCF6676.JPG

Then off to Powerspeed to get them to make me one of their lovely stainless exhausts 3" down pipe to 2.5" full system. Good for well over the 300hp I am looking for. Key design brief was to keep it looking standard at the back.

nowhere else do you find so much dislike for the motor.
Believe me, you do :( on some other SX owners forums, even not in UK ...

I don't really get it either, I don't even have to complain about it's sound.
It's an engine, it makes noise ... like all the others, I think :p

Maybe it doesn't rev like a ca, or doesn't feel as aggressive due to the nvcs giving more low/mid range torque.
But if that's what I was after, I would have bought a <strike>lawnmower</strike> honda

This ^^^^

if you had put any other engine in there, I would have loved this project. But an SR20??? Sorry, I hate it :(

Not sure of why there is a dislike for the engine that powers the car that this club is so linked to. I can only think it is down to it's popularity :)

The SR20DET is a readily available reliable power, sharing very similar dimensions to the Alfa Nord engine. Alfa V6s are too heavy and large, Alfa Nord based Twin Sparks are getting like hens teeth and quite expensive to tune. If you turbo it it will sound similar to an SR20DET. Modern Alfas are front wheel drive and no natural gearbox option.

Just a little bit of conspiracy theory....... There are rumours that during the 80's when Alfa Romeo, like most of the Italian motor industry, was skint it sold a lot of its engineering technology to buy manufacturing technology and realise some cash. This is evidenced in the joint venture between Nissan and Alfa Romeo who collaborated to produce the Alfa Arna (Nissan Cherry with Alfasud mechanicals). The engine design both internally and externally is suspiciously similar which makes me think there may be some basis to this claim.

But as I said before I thought this might case a bit of division.

Got some FD Mazda stuff too :D

Back in the sixties my Alfa was way ahead of it's time. 5 speed all synchro gearbox, Discs all round and over 100hp out of a 1600cc. Indeed the 280mm discs were very impressive at pulling the car down from over 100mph.

I wanted to build a classic with modern mechanicals and whilst the existing braking system worked well it had a few weak points. The biggest being that it was single circuit meaning a single master cylinder dictated to whether you were going to stop or not. Later cars had dual circuit brakes but these too had there problems including an expensive dual servo system and tandem master cylinder arrangement. So what do you do to improve. The car ran 15" wheels as standard (now retro fitted with wider GTA replica alloys rather than the skinny steels) so I measured what was the biggest disc I could fit. There are a few companies selling aftermarket big brake conversions but these were nearly a grand.

290mm seemed to be the largest anyone had fitted and there was some reference to Mazda FD3 being the correct offset and with ali calipers that were nice and light. Any how I got some Mazda Calipers on ebay and bought a pair of brembo disks which I had turned them down from 292 to 290.

The SR is a cracking engine but it sounds pants. The reason it doesn't belong in the alfa is because it doesn't suit it's personality.

I'd much rather see any other kind of engine running on a nice set of bike carbs in that alfa. It has nothing to do with power.

EDIT: Actually, I can see that the hose fitment is angled not straight like a 14. Apart from that though, they look the same to me.

I doubt S14 calipers would have gone on as easily, as the Mazda ones have a wider centre to centre mounting hole, which is allowing him to squeeze the mounting holes either side of his original mounting holes :)

Also the disc thinkness is different. S14 calipers take a 30mm disc where as the Mazda ones are about 24mm :)

Awesome project though :) good luck

Exactly right. I want to keep the unsprung weight down so ali calipers was a must. Going from plain disks and iron 2 pot calipers to vented and ali 4 pot adds 700g per side. I may save up and go for some ali belled rotors some day and then the I will be in net credit. :D

Love this project

Old school cars with modern power plants and mechanicals are awesome. The reliability and performance of the modern tech coupled with the style and rarity of the classic car, win win in my book.

Couldn't give a stuff what engine you're putting in there, it's your car and it is going to be a serious toy when it's finished (although judging by the speed of updates it is either already finished or very close to being finished!).

Once the car was back from Powerspeed with it's shiny new exhaust system it was time to fit the tunnel that Ed had beautifully fabricated.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TVwikof9sSI/AAAAAAAAG-g/45E3smYONu4/s640/DSCF6950.JPG

As you can see the gear leaver hole has been opened up so as not to stress the gearbox cover plated ring (not sure what its called... the bit the gearlever goes through) when the engine rocks. We had to cut another 5" x 8" section out of the footwell to allow a bit of extra clearance around the exhaust downpipe. Another piece of Alfa for the loft to go with the tunnel.

A bit of dressing with the grinder and the interior was ready for paint. I am fitting a roll cage so I am going to be doing quite a bit of touching up but I wanted to get some paint protection on the tunnel.

While I was in painting mood I pulled the engine out and cleaned the engine bay of 40+ years of grime. The old Nord engine leaked plenty of oil which preserved it from rust well, but all this grime had to come off so as to have a clean engine bay.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TVwilp20VUI/AAAAAAAAG-k/T72K-8lfL6o/s640/DSCF6951.JPG

I spent an age masking up the interior to avoid getting paint where I didnt want it. Decorating sheet and masking tape worked well and I was impressed with how well rattle cans with 2k worked. If anyone does this make sure they have the correct mask and eye protection as 2k is horrible stuff and its not worth the risk of getting it in your lungs.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TX5uwipQiGI/AAAAAAAAHEg/no_MChG0z1Q/s640/DSCF6961.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TX5uxXjiI2I/AAAAAAAAHEk/yjSfQ9DnCLM/s640/DSCF6962.JPG

As mentioned previously the weak point of the early Sprint GT braking system was that it was single circuit. A bit of originality I could do without. I could have gone for the later tandem system but the master cylinders are rare and stupidly expensive. There are aftermarket twin cylinder systems available but at dual circuit systems but I choked at nearly £600 and that is without a hydraulic clutch conversion.

The pedals on the Alfa are floor mounted with the master cylinders exposed to all the road can through at them causing all kind or corrosion issues and leaving them exposed to getting a whack from kerbs (street and circuit) so I went on the hunt for an alternative.

The Alfa footwell bulkhead is half engine bay and half wheelarch so the usual solution of fitting the master cylinders through the bulkhead would be challenging, particularly as the bulkhead is a very curved (like the end of a bath...not the tap end!). Hanging pedals would have required a lot of fabrication and again chopping up the originality of the car.

After much searching I came across the rear facing master cylinder system made by OBP. OBP are well known in racing, kit cars and the aftermarket world. They manufacture decent quality products at reasonable prices. They sell a complete set of 3 pedals incl master cylinders and bias adjuster for less than half the Alfa aftermarket equivalent.

With the engine out I fitted the brake, clutch and fuel lines. The latter was 7m of 10mm copper pipe providing feed from the tank and back again. Thanks to my mate Lee who helped me with this. I have a mandrel to bend it but in reality thumbs and knees worked well also by careful bending I could avoid joints and only had to solder one 90deg elbow. I used soft copper from the pedals to the engine bay and kunifer in the engine bay and under the car as it is much tougher.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TcHV2D6lm_I/AAAAAAAAHWc/9u0qFCrHzOs/s640/DSCF7001.JPG

An alloy plate covers the master cylinders to rest your heels on.

Much headscratching accompanied how to do a 90 degree bend on the throttle cable but Mr Yamaha supplied a tight 90degree motorcycle throttle tube and once pointing in the right direction it was simply a case of using a teflon lined venhill universal m'bike cable to get it to the throttle. Pedal travel is a bit longer than perfect so I may get one of those smaller throttle pulleys.

More on that later...

You're doing a massive project man and I like the quality. I know how much work you've done, but it's a lot of fun as well!!!

As for the motor choice, each to their own but I had 2 non-turbo s14's and few turbo ones and there's nothing on earth to convince me to an n/a motor in 2l class. If it was a huge american v8 lump then that's another story, no turbos needed. If turbo choice/wastegate control/mapping is done properly there's no noticeable lag. Power delivery can be quick and smooth as on ANY 2l n/a.

I think you made a right decision, old engine/gearbox would be a waste of time in reliability terms and after squeezing more power it would become un-driveable on the street.

I'd like to do a CA powered S14a, quite surprised that I haven't seen one yet, tbh. The resulting thread would be epic. :sxoc:

IIRC there is one, or has been one kicking about on here somewhere.

[QUOTE=Rob_SX;5813372]an idea almost worth doing!

I've just finished CA18det into s14 and Mitsubishi Evo TD05 twin scroll turbo onto CA18det. Easy electricals, easy to diagnose, easy to fix, fast enough. The Silvia had previously a non turbo sr20de, piece of junk.

The Alfa originally came equipped with low back seats with seat belts that flopped over your shoulder without giving much attention to safety. This was an area I was not willing to accept (the one area I wasnt going to compromise to maintain originality is safety). So a roll cage and decent belts and seats are a must.

As with most 44 year old cars there will be some corrosion. My Alfa was restored in the mid 90's and on the whole the restorer did a good job. While painting I did find one area that needed attention. And after all there is little point in attaching a roll cage to rust so it need to be fixed. I could have had a go but Ed was on the case in no time the old corroded steel was cut out and replaced with fresh. It is now nice and strong.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TX5vJMv0scI/AAAAAAAAHF0/pY-o5PZyxbw/s640/DSCF6981.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TX5vLwa9KrI/AAAAAAAAHF4/wS7DE6IiUzk/s640/DSCF6982.JPG

I scratched up the floor quite a bit putting the rear cage in so I will need to tidy this up later.

While I was at it I also panelled up the bulkead so that the boot and tank is clearly separated. The panels were in 2mm Ali and I did consider for a minute leaving them in bare ally but I decided to drill the rivet holes, clean up, acid etch and paint.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TcHVcQ51N8I/AAAAAAAAHU0/2lF9Gh_MwyU/s640/DSCF7013.JPG

My Bosch 044 pump and 300ZX filter had turned up so I finished installing these in the well that was the bottom of the old tank. Bryn had included a lovely splash bowl with my tank so I fitted this too. Some of the Alfa guys fit their gel batteries here too but I really don't fancy having anything sparky near the tank, pump, fuel vapours etc. I decided the battery would be either in the passenger compartment or under the bonnet.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TcHVeXLTjhI/AAAAAAAAHVA/144DT7PZiKU/s640/DSCF7016.JPG

The car has a fuel flap and some people weld these up with the competition tank but I has just put in a butyl seal that will keep all the water out and stop access to the boot. The new tank uses the Alfa sender unit so other than extending the wires I can use the original gauge. Sound simple ....not really more on this later.

After fitting a brake light switch into the front brake circuit I could install the fluid reservior a nice tripple job from Car Builder Solutions that does both brake circuits and clutch along with a low fluid level indicator. The original Alfa brake system would let you know when there was no fluid by allowing full pedal travel with little slowing until you hit something

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_hMY_xrfRZKk/TcHV3SIBmtI/AAAAAAAAHWk/h61eBS7JYbk/s640/DSCF7002.JPG

I have also installed so high tech heat shielding to the bulkhead I have applied even more than this since the pic (as I expect the turbo will be getting nice and toasty).

A load of suspension parts which I sent off for blasting and powdercoating had come back and I was running out of jobs to do before dropping the engine back in. More on that later.....

Geometry pack refitted along with new adjustable camber arms and new polybushes/balljoints and spherical wishbone bearings. Checked the wheel bearings but these were as new so just repacked them with grease. Rust protection thanks to POR 15 and powdercoating. You can also see the home made caliper adaptors (big lump of T6 ally). Whilst functional these are prototype and may get a set machined up and anodised to look a bit prettier.

What's the reason for the Rover Fuse box? (Thought it might have been more logical to use the Nissan's?)

Like the rocker cover idea :-) Personally I do think you need to remove the 'Nissan' from the rocker :-)

The Nissan fuse box is hoooge and designed for a loads of accessories such as ABS, Aircon, Electric windows etc... The Rover item is very compact as you can see I don't have much room to spare. There are more fuses inside the car but the primary ones are under the bonnet.

I will be removing the Nissan Rocker logo but still on a hunt for a spare rocker cover to crackle paint or polish. Not sure about the putting Alfa Romeo on it (still unsure of the calipers).

Well the next job was to sort out the coolant system. I have used the Alfa radiator (it was relatively new) but had it modified so that there was sufficient room for the intercooler outlets.

On the original alfa both the speedo and tacho were cable driven so I sent the clocks off to "Speedy Cables" to put new modern components inside the cases. The water temp works off a Alfa sender in a universal 31mm inline boss. The fuel guage works off the original sender (now) in a new tank. So just oil temp and pressure to sort. Oil pressure will probably be via a sandwich plate but not much room and oil temp will either also be in the sandwich plate or tapped into the sump.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-_hVoO_wcSaA/TcuIQI0osLI/AAAAAAAAHjE/TSBM67_t75E/s640/DSCF7034.JPG

Not a lot gives them away to be anything but standard (except the small green lcd section on the speedo). All look good but I am still trying to get them to work. My understanding is that the S14 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) gives out a rather weak analogue signal which is in turn amplified and converted to a digital signal to the ECU via the clocks. I need this digital signal for my modified Alfa clocks so I am trying to use the PCB from an s14 speedo to do this. I await the wisdom of SXOC to help me identify 12V, Ground, Input & Output.

Just read all of this thread...

Mr Alfaholic, you are completely and utterly off your head :sxoc:

This is an awesome project. I think its the fact that you're taking a classic car with an ancient old engine and chassis, upgrading everything in sight, giving it 300bhp and leave it looking relatively standard... Always had a soft spot for alfas, especially their engines, and I can see where all the hate has came from.

But what I love is that you've picked the engine on its actual practical benefits (ie, light, compact, powerful, relatively cheap, and reliable) rather than the usual sentimental reasons most people put an engine in for.

I happen to love the SR sound when it has a good exhaust system, and I think the SR growl sounds kinda oldschool anyways. It'll certainly confuse everyone at italian car shows :D

Oh well I should get used to the last 5% of a car build taking 50% of the time. Lots of progress but not much worth photographing.

Three things really:-

1. After spending hours trying to get a clean feed from the Nissan VSS to feed my speedo (ie including going through the S14 speedo board pictured previously) I gave up and bought a hall sensor from Speedy Cables which works by sensing ferrous objects passing by it. In this case off the bolts holding the prop flange to the diff. Got it all set up and then found that the LCD panel on the speedo was not working. So have had to send back to Speedy Cables to repair. (they promised it would be with me yesterday but nothing and they are closed apart from a receptionist today.....grrrr)

2. Next challenge was the lights. Alfas of this age gave permanent live to lights which is not ideal as there is a risk that they could flatten the battery quite quickly. I could put them all to ignition live but that meant no side lights withought the ignition on. I tried to just give power to the sides but they were backfeeding to the headlights. Anyway the solution was a combination of switching relays and diodes.

3. Next problem was the steering arm. I was never very happy with it as it wasnt quite as sturdy as I would like (it is a little "mission critical" so I am getting a 25mm tubed version made up).

The trim is starting to go back in and will take some pics tonight to post.

As they say the last 10% of a project takes 90% of the time. This is definately the case with this project. As a result of increasing the tunnel size I had to think about how to retain a heater/demister. The tunnel now has taken up where the heater fan was! The matrix was also pretty much shot. I want to keep the car as standard looking as possible so I decided to fit a modern T7design version inside the old heater box and modify the existing controls so that they still look and operate as standard.

As mentioned previously as a result in my total failure in getting the Nissan VSS to talk to my speedo I needed to find a speedo take off. So I made up a bracket drill one of the webs on the diff and bolted in place. Popped it in gear and it all worked well. Just need to calibrate it next.

Two weeks away on hols in Cyprus meant no progress but a welcome bit of sunshine and R&R.

Most of the mechanicals are now done so time to sort the interior and electricals. I'll spare you all the pictures of carpeting the interior but needless to say it was not my favourite part of the job. The Alfa has lot of curves and bumps on the floor and I dont own a sewing machine and am no patchwork expert.

I bought two rolls of ebay carpet (as used in the New Mini) which is advertised and formable with heat. Lots of swearing, hot air gun moulding and paper templates I managed to have the carpet roughly to shape with less than ten pieces. It seemed a shame to cover up all that metalwork that I had carefully prepped and painted but I think it makes the car look more finished.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-KS2jn6BzLm4/Tl3bK8eJstI/AAAAAAAAITU/jWGv6BJLs_s/s720/DSCF7575.JPG

The old Alfa seats whilst comfortable had very little side support and were low back so offered little in the way of protection. I searched high and low for suitable highback seats but they either looked too modern, were not comfortable, too heavy or wouldn't fit. At the Autosport show some time back I tried a pair of Recaro Pole positions which were ideal but a bit pricey. I kept an eye on special offers and ebay but when they did turn up they were still priicey or very tired looking. Anyhow a few months back after a few beers I bought a secondhand set of leather alcantara pole positions for more that I care to mention and these have been sitting in the spare room awaiting a purpose in life. They are a tight fit in the little Alfa but perfect for my needs.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-o3F5kD55GZc/Tl3bCj6TzoI/AAAAAAAAIUM/MDJxaKeSJPY/s512/DSCF7567.JPG

Lack of headroom meant I had to abandon the the idea of sliders so these are fixed items sat upon subframes that I fabricated. A pair of Sabelt 3" harnesses will help me stay in my seat on the road and track.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-8jRs2vf-99I/Tl3bDz8brNI/AAAAAAAAIS4/byuxNjogXRM/s720/DSCF7568.JPG

With the pedals moved closer and the seats further back I needed a nicely dished steering wheel. The OMP Corsica does the job. I might get a wooden one too at some point.

A list of jobs is always a good thing when building cars. Its always a bit depressing to start with a hooge list which just gets added to but I am now down to one side of A4 with only the occasional item being added to.

Top of the list was sorting the location of the fuses inside the car. The original fuse box had only eight fuses. I now have over thirty...twenty of them are inside the car.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-nhBrZ-0h9Zw/Tl3bGa2ImEI/AAAAAAAAITE/dq6vuOvWASw/s720/DSCF7571.JPG
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-KS2jn6BzLm4/Tl3bK8eJstI/AAAAAAAAITU/jWGv6BJLs_s/s720/DSCF7575.JPG

This was just about the last job before the MoT so I went and booked it in.

Car needed a wash as it was very dirty. Scrubbed up quite well although the photo is kind to the paintwork.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KVDc2NSP7js/Tl7B7hWCyMI/AAAAAAAAITs/jOyt6ujGQag/s720/DSCF7581.JPG
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ltB2ShoDHQM/Tl7B1zZR6PI/AAAAAAAAITc/-enShKb1m18/s720/DSCF7577.JPG

The trip to the MoT station was great fun as I had practically no brakes to start with. Bias bar was set fully to the rear and the disks and pads were brand new. But after winding the bias adjuster and a few stops the brakes came to life. The lack of servo means you have to push quite hard on the pedal but the braking is fairly good and getting better and better.

The MoT was nice and uneventful (tester made a comment that the tracking was out) so the next milestione now complete !!

I am having the car mapped next week so I am pussy footing around but I can feel that the car will be quite quick. I have wired in the Gizzmo discreetly under the dash and the bright blue led display was showing the boost coming in nicely.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-RgzsUjUEK8U/Tl3bHa-VKMI/AAAAAAAAITI/qzwid1I6KsM/s720/DSCF7572.JPG

The extra power is putting a bit of strain on the centre bearing so I have ordered a heavy duty version that the racers use.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-BuOcENee9hQ/Tl7CCjkbKYI/AAAAAAAAIUE/QiVFX19sJgg/s720/DSCF7587.JPG
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-joDQGFUswq0/Tl7B_YuqzuI/AAAAAAAAIT4/N8Ed2xpYc6U/s720/DSCF7584.JPG

The car is also impractically low so I am going to fit some longer springs on the front at the weekend.

Well the car is all together now and mapped by Jez at Horsham Developments with the Nismo 555s that I got from Canada. While I was ther Jez also did a full suspension set up to my specs. I now have 17psi of boost and nearly three times the power of the car when it left the factoty :)

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-uefXjDNibEE/TnE7YA4U6cI/AAAAAAAAIUo/AjUo3WMeU8c/s640/DSCF7595.JPG

Car certainly goes well, stops and handles too. A few issues cropped up mainly around temp issues. The engine temps were creeping up on the motorway at cruising speeds even though they were fine blasting around on the A & B roads. The issue is pretty obvious due to having a chuffing great intercooler directly infront of the rad. I have panneled around the rad forceing air to go throught the intercooler and radiator rather than around it but ultimately the issue is getting air in. I had pondered for quite a while about adding more venting into the front of the car and eventually I summoned up the courage to get the hole saw out.

I am off to France in the car this weekend and want to make sure cooling isnt an issue. Went out for a blast today and temps are steady varying only between 84 and 86 deg even after some hard work so hopefully thats another issue sorted.

One day I hope I will have the time/space/ability to put together a car of that quality

Hope I get to see it in the metal one day,

I certainly hope to before winter sets in. Just done 1200 miles run down to Angouleme and all went well. I need to find out what events are on. Could be taking it down to Somerset some time soon to visit family in Taunton so you may see the car in your (and Chriscooke's) neck of the woods.

If you're in the local area, I am sure we could arrange a pub meet to all come and oggle your car, and have an excuse for a pub meal :)

Nice work Jim! :) Been extremely busy with work so only just finished reading this thread.

Are you going to take it on next years tour? I'll have to see if I can get back to join you in the Fury either way.

Haven't been on here for a while but nice to see some of the old hands cropping up on the thread like Jez H and Algie and others.

One thing that I never heard a mention of a few years ago was all this hate for the SR!

What's that about?

I owned both and whilst I have a bit of nostalgia for the CA (first turbo car I owned, remaps and boost upgrades brough much joy) the SR was the better lump for me.

And let's face it neither of them sound that great, but equally not that different to any other turbo 4 pot.

Get over it! :)

If I can afford to keep both I will take the Fury on the Alps tour (it is far more suited to it). If not then I'll get some 048s or 888s on the Alfa and try not to be so far behind everyone. You must get back for the tour mate.

I'll do my best - keep me on the email list when the discussions start up again soon.

It will certainly give your new brakes on the Alfa a good work out if you decide to take that instead of the Fury :)

I added the vents to the front of the car and put cowling around the rad and this improved matters hugely. It hasn't been warm enough to test properly but no issues on the motorway in current Autumnal temps. Trackdays may be a different matter though. The rad is the original Alfa one cut down and modified and one of my winter projects will be to replace with a nice high efficiency Aluminium one.

I am off down to Taunton and Exeter this weekend so another test coming.

- a new custom aluminium radiator

- upgrading the LSD (If I have any money left)

Hi Sir,

I'm interested about the fuel tank (same car) and contact Bryan about it, but he doesn't have any dimensions of it.
Do you still have the template you manufactured or any kind of dimensions of it in order to assist.

I really appreciate any kind of help..

This car is awesome. It's got the looks. And the performance. Shame the sr is not that good in the noise department but it's still a fecking good engine. I've always wanted a classic car and then put a modern engine in it like this. Win win as far as I'm concerned. Well done dude on the feature. I just got the mag yesterday.

i am yes ( in a semi serious sort of way )

the heart of an alfa is the engine. it's what gives it it's soul and the sr20 has absolutely zero of that imho. it sounds like a sewing machine on crack and for me detracts a little.

the car is awesome but i would rather see an alfa v6 or i4 in there than the sr.

all personal choice and opinion

Just gone through this from page one and the work that has gone into this to keep the aesthetics as beautiful as when it left the Alfa factory all the years ago is amazing but you have also chosen a jap-engine with a good reliabilty and tuning background so by putting the two together is pure genius :notworthy

TBH I read about this car in PPC mag as Im a subscriber as they symbolise my thoughts in the way of tuning but just thought Id search it and here you are.

Congratulations on creating such a car

Thanks mate. Car has still plenty of development left to get to exactly what I want. Upgraded the rad which now performs well and doesnt leak.

Got a squeaky centre bearing on the prop to sort but fed up with crawling under the car so will try and borrow a ramp at the weekend. The Bosch fuel pump is getting on my nerves as it is so loud, so will try some sound insulation. The big bill will be when I get it resprayed. It looks okay in photos but the paint is a multitude of colours and there are a few chips, scratches and minor dings to sort.
