hi all this it the volvo 340 1.4 with 58k on the clock :D my plan is to put a clio 16v engine in:)
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0828.jpg

very good condition for what age it is but a very good starting ground for my conversion so im well happy:D

so the same day i picked up the 340 i got 16v lump after i dropped the car off.
2 birds one stone:)
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0831.jpg

so started to strip to engine down as i wasnt too sure on the history of it.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0832.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0833.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0834.jpg

but things got worse and worse:( started with half a litre of water came out before the oil
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0835.jpg

then a nice rusty spark plug! along with the rest of it!!!
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0838.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0840.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0841.jpg

oh ignoring the rust you should see a crack the one of 6 in the block sm2
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0842.jpg

so once i saw that i was on the phone returning the engine and a week later i got hold of another one this time out of a clio:D
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0853.jpg

well got it set up on the stand ready for a strip down well top end any way as i found there was a slight leak from the headgasket. here we go again lol
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0868.jpg

well heads off and all looks good at the mo

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0871.jpg

well i stripped the head down ready for a skim
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0873.jpg

the head almost bare didnt take any of it finished but you will see the results :)
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0874.jpg

started to look at the wiring loom as i know i dont need much off it to run but i think its a little over my head at this point.

sort of skipping back to the first engine i took the inlet manifold to be modified as the heater box would be in the way of the throttle body. looks the dogs well happy how it came out:D
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0878.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0879.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0880.jpg

well i have spent a couple more hours working the wiring out so i think i know what will go where :) so all i have to do is wait for the engine to be built by me and put in the volvo by me lol thanks for the tips peeps helps a lot :)

so after getting back from getting my mullet cut lol i thought id finish off stripping the engine as it has to be done anyway
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0888.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0890.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0889.jpg

but whilst stripping the engine i came across this
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0883.jpg

no worries though ill get a new one :D

whilst working on the engine i thought i would take one off the big end caps off to look at the bearing which i can say is a ok :D so im happy:)
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0884.jpg

its no that bad at all as the picture made the lines a lot worse than it actually is so im not worries :D

well thats as far as i got other than finding these wires i the 340 which i have no clue to where they go lol there circled in yellow
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/IMG_0891.jpg

well friday came and i finished work at 2 good but the shift work sucks lol but i did i spend thursday collect the bits i.e gaskets etc

i trimmed the plastic baffle plate in the bottom end so it would take the volvo sump and proceeded to fit it.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/a1cc4d72.jpg

then turned it round, gave it a clean, blowed out the holes with compressed air and fitted the new head gasket.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/095dc615.jpg

picked up the freshly skimmed head and fitted it to the block with new head bolts all torqued up to specifications.it was all the head needed as it was pressure tested. as my saying goes "if it ain't broke don't touch" :D
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/b7da6f6f.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/80ff98f7.jpg

then fitted the camshafts in all torqued up,fitted the cambelt and camebelt cover along with the inlet and fuel rail then that was that for friday as it was 8pm and the sun was vanashing lol

Friday came and it was time to take then old lump out:D
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/1a7f7dbd.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/b51763f8.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/be4b74de.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/c82ec79f.jpg

so the engine was out after couple of hours fooking around with all the niggly bits.
my engine i had built had engine mounts already so i jumped in and took the ones that where there.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/2335219b.jpg

i started to prep the valver lump for fitting which started with a new flywheel crank shaft seal as the old one was leaking when i bought the engine and fitted the spigot bearing which i sourced :) oh and a nice shiny new clutch too :D
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/22d11772.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/919fece8.jpg

fitted the bell housing which took a while as i didnt have the bolts with it so i was back and forth between shops until i got what i needed lol but i sorted it in the end
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/2f8305d6.jpg

now it was time to fit the engine which i thought would be easy peasy but boy was i wrong lol as trying the line the prop and all the engine mounts was the biggest pain lol took couple of attemps but its there and looking good sm4
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/1678d8c2.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/755cd6c1.jpg

well much didnt happen during the week as i was on shift :( but during the week i acquired a few things i.e alternator, dipstick, coilpack, fluids,ht leads etc oh and a fuel pump with mount from a calibra 2.0ltr.

also picked up a renault 19 thermostat housing as it faces the right way(clio on the left and r19 on the right)
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/9fdfe2d9.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/f5a1edac.jpg

over the weekend i fitted the alternator,ht leads, put oil in(5 litres do these engine drink too lol)1.7 volvo 340 oil filter for top filtration:D oh and the 1.7 340 rad hoses i found but need to t in the heater hose and sort the feed out too.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/d618bdd3.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/91a8faba.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/44d1e23d.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/7406e63a.jpg

while i was doing that this little shtit cleaned my daily run about as i cought him throwing a rock at it.chased him down the ally to his house got him grounded lol his parents told him to clean it there doing but it needed to be cleaned anyway lol

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/8c472eb8.jpg

well today(sunday) i focused on the fuel system as i was going to injection so i needed to fit high pressure fuel lines and a fuel pump.
as i said above i already got the fuel pump off a calibra and i picked up some plastic 8mm fuel lines(air line) rated to 10bar.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/9709fe8c.jpg

proceeded to mount the fuel pump first(note will fit a swirl pot just tight on cash)

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/03bc9b58.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/fd8743b8.jpg

old fuel lines out(6mm od lol)

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/268a9eca.jpg

new fuel lines fitted

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/52b85caa.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/600ff5af.jpg

thing is though that was not to bad to do but the thing that took the longest was the power feed to the pump as i fed it through the car as i wanted it inside the car if there was a short not next to the fuel lines lol i had to take loads of the interior panels out to feed it but fed it through and into the engine bay through the bonnet cable grommet in the bulk head.

this is as i left it at 8pm tonight :D

well during the week i had umpf to get the volvo done so i went to a volvo scrappy with hundreds off them:D to get a arb some more hoses and a volvo 240 throttle cable :)
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/f7a911bc.jpg

funny things was i said to him i needed a lift so i could get the arb off but instead of lifting he did this lol
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/98454d8d.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/b44de39a.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/079baa3a.jpg

so came back from the scrappy happy as i got what i needed as i manged to finish off the coolant system with 1.7 340 parts and a 850 t piece from the back of the engine chopped down :D
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/628881dd.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/719ab868.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/459b1134.jpg

i removed the studs from the exhaust side as the nuts where missing and i didnt have any to replace it with so i used stainless steel bolts with locking washers
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/0b6b3b0d.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/77948016.jpg

i had a predicament as my throttle body i had from the clio wouldnt work in my set up as the r19 throttle body i had had a flange so i could put a air filter on it as the clio one didnt, also the throttle attachment on the r19 was different as the clio had the bike brake cable attachment which i needed.

so i took the attachment off, took the pivot shaft and butterfly off and swapped it round and fitted and reset the tps on the r19 throttle body.
(bottom r19 mixed with clio parts, and the top the clio throttle body)
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/2e9a98ff.jpg

well over friday and saturday i started on my wiring boy what a time consuming job think i worked out 10 hours or so.i still havnt finished yet though.
so i spread out my loom ready for me to chop it up.cut the plug off and chopped off what i needed(no going back lol)
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/71eaf4b9.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/98438eea.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/e8446e09.jpg

and this is what i didnt need from the loom lol a bloody lot lol
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/df3561bd.jpg

just some pictures of what i was dealing with
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/7fd3a0b8.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/207189ed.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/0dd1c945.jpg

this was when i packed up for the night on friday leaving with just the lambda sensor plug to wire in
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/57f6551a.jpg

then saturday came and i carried on doing the wiring
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/4f4ac259.jpg

then i needed a positive feed, ignition feed and a earth for the ecu harness.so i tapped into the harness and used an 340 plug i got from the scrappy
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/ba52a7b5.jpg

the ecu harness was wired up finally :D but i still have relays and such to do lol
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/c57d6d4c.jpg

mounted the ecu down
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/cc9e0e48.jpg

finished wiring up the relays
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/16150596.jpg

as i left it but i did turn the ignition on and the fuel pump primed :) well happy but im still waiting on the inlet manifold so i can start it finally :D

spent the day pottering around with the car so i started with the clocks i bought sorting them out and fitting the vss to it too.

so i ripped i out the old one:)
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/98f496c5.jpg

my current one on the left which is only 15k old as it was replaced with a new one and the one i bought with the extra dials.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/c7666df5.jpg

i wanted to keep as much of the original clocks as possible as they looked brand new still seeing as they had only done 15k so i stripped the old clocks down for what i needed and transferred the parts.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/e2c2d661.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/a7b971fc.jpg

the finished article
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/156e9348.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/6f07f4d2.jpg

this is the vehicle speed sensor that stops the car from revving when you stop after driving hope i wired it up right lol
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/f74923a5.jpg

i fitted that to the clocks and put everything back together, turned the ignition on and everything worked so i hope that's a good sign:D
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/9dcef14a.jpg

i also fitted the map sensor to the blower box as i thought it would be the best location so i could run the vaccum of the inlet manifold
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/78ef68d4.jpg

also spent an hour or two tidying up the wiring loom as it was a mess when i left it yesterday
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/3a80457f.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/8beefaac.jpg

so for now the wiring is 100% complete :D so happy but waiting on the inlet as that's what's stopping me from starting it:(

so thought id start on my exhaust today

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/e09a220a.jpg

i got the downpipe for the valver engine to chop up as it didnt fit for hell lol. i measured it,chopped it and tacked it up.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/9415191e.jpg

but it didnt fit :( so had to cut it up a couple more times to get it to fit but i got there lol

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/f11bd6d7.jpg

had to chop and turn the flange(lol) around 180 degrees as it was facing the wrong way
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/21aa0142.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/79430af9.jpg

the finished article :D
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/lukejamesoneill/volvo%20340%2016v/e0692f2f.jpg

thats all i can do atm as i need more exhaust as i can use exhaust from another clio so the flanges(lol) will mate up lol oh aswell i fitted the arb so all thats left is

1.finish exhaust
2.get inlet back and fit
3.start car :D woop woop

Awesome!! Top work there.

Good job you caught that kid but I wouldn't have let him near my car!

Plenty of space in that engine bay to slap a turbo on it. ;) :D

cheers guys yea i did and did he crap himself when i caught him lol then his mum shouting at him lol

right well had some time after work to work on the exhaust

i went to my local scrappy and picked up some exhaust parts so i could fabricate my second section of my downpipe which resulted in hours of more work lol
