SPEED CAMERAS - THE NEXT GENERATION
Australia leads the way with cameras that you can't avoid
SPECS cameras that calculate your average speed between locations are already slowing motorists in selected parts of the country but a new system being trialled in Australia could take things to another level.
Ten cameras have been installed along the 300 km Hume Freeway. Like SPECS they measure elapsed time to nab those speeding over sections of the journey. Unlike SPECS the new system can also record the speed of a passing vehicle.
Technologies used include digital imaging, optical character recognition and are all networked. Costing two million Australian dollars it's got the authorities there excited as it allows a large stretch of road to be covered with relatively few cameras.
Opposition groups in Australia claim it might force drivers onto the back roads creating greater risks. The reality is of course that most drivers will simply have to adhere to the limits.
Such systems are bound to find their way to the UK and it may not be long before our trunk roads are blessed with cameras and all our journeys are measured in this way. How long before the Government buys Trafficmaster which already has such a network installed...?

Cruise Control will be the new must have accesory in your car so that you can set it to 70mph and not worry. How hard is it the fix your speed to 70mph over a long distance? With traffic I would say its near impossible!
