View Full Version : My 240Z

Hi Guys
Thought I may as well start a project thread on my new 240Z.
After longing for one over the past decade or so, I managed to find one at the right price, and in the right condition for me to "do it how I want it".
I collected the car on Saturday 19th from Thirsk (n Yorkshire). The car had been dry stored for the last 10 years in a container on a farm. The guy I bought the car of used to drive it, until he decided to restore the car. He stripped it down but didn't continue :( anyhow my gain :)

Plans:-
Remove all rust
Weld up holes
Possibly fit 200SX rear subframe for IRS
200SX front subframe
Styling :)
The whale tail will be hitting the bin, rest assured there :)
Will update over time :)
Looks great mate, I'm also (like many folks here) a huge fan of these cars. That's a lot of rust. Time for a dip? Expensive, but will pay dividends in the long run if your rails aren't too gone :D
WANT WANT WANT!! cant wait to see this progress mate!

Well done Dan! Beautiful car! Can't wait to see her finished. A gut that I know spent a year looking for a GT6 and happened upon a 240Z and was instantly hooked and bought that instead. Always loved them.
This should be interesting. Looking forward to this Dan.

I wouldn't if it was me mate, I think the route you've decided on is by far the best for what you want the car to be!
Still interesting to imagine it though...
do not bead blast or shot blast it as it can kill your pannels as it generates heat, ask BREN about what it did to some of his pannels, soda blasting though more expensive is so much better:nod:

I also took that horrid bootlid/spoiler off
Is that after sand blasting??? What did they sand blast
Fork lift truck to move the engine... me and crouchy kept it old school like the car and used bits of wood :wack:
Did the blasters actually do anything
Thank god you've got rid of that spoiler
Not thinking about keeping the original engine and tuning that?
Thats not been blasted surely?

They blasting the whole car Dan?
Dan@DB-Power
17-08-2011, 23:29
They are blasting the floor and chassis, not the bodywork
this could be amazing, The v10 would never work, so a rb30 will have to do :D looks good so far though buddy.

Man, u worse then a girl.
Make ya mind up. lol
Well RB30 is a cheaper option. Seeing its sitting with you already. Turbo powers.
But can understand the v8 wants, v8 sounds nom nom.
think the RB30 has been sold gonzo, i seem to remember a for sale thread for it

In that case v8 it is then:wack:
keep it simple: SR20. You know them well, they are light and can make more than enough power. And with a DECENT exhaust (apex'i etc) they dont sound as bad as people make out. You could have it on the road alot quicker, cheaper and easier that way!
Just Lobb an sr20 in it and you have a better chance of finishing the car if there are less things to worry about. The cost of the v8s and rb30s etc all make it a very expensive build.

+1 for the sr20 all day long!!

Your other projects haven't made it to fruition. Do something simple in this, make it work :)

+2
I know it's not a 6, but somehow the SR20 seems more in keeping with the nature of the car being a relatively small inline engine. The 240Z was never meant to be a yank-style muscle car, so a V8 just seems wrong.
JulesS14200
22-08-2011, 09:47
V8
Keep the l28 and tune that or drop in an rb25/26, infact any straight 6 will do the job
You know you can't make a z sound as bad as an sr - you will be bum sexed by Daz and channie for the rest of your life if you do that
JulesS14200
22-08-2011, 10:05
Buy my RB26!
Or be a man and stick a meaty V8 in!
A straight 6 is the only option really.
Like Mel says, if you fit an SR then me & channie will butt rape you.
I just want to see this one get close to being finished.
I think you should compare weights of all possible engines and try and use one that will give nearest 50/50 balance with the chassis.
Then compare sounds and come to some kind of compromise :)
Believe with the standard engine its 50/50 from factory, 1068kg so keeping the weight of engine similar as possible will be best for handling
Dan@DB-Power
22-08-2011, 11:02
That'll be the SR, would be very close to 50/50
I know, I'll get the car ready for an engine and then decide :D
JulesS14200
22-08-2011, 11:47
Who cares about 50/50 handling zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz:sleep:
It needs to have nice noise whenever you put your foot down not sound like a wet fart SR :whip:

Jules speaks the truth
I think a straight 6 will be more in keeping with its roots, why not use an l28?
Dan@DB-Power
22-08-2011, 12:10
too old and not enough power
Is the noie of a 6 on ITB's not enough :p
RB it is then :D
Don't get me wrong I hate the SR but as dan never finishes any project it would be nice to make it simple enough to just fit and get runing.
No offence dan bit you have to see our reservations.
^^^^ Fitting any engine into any car that it wasnt originally intended for is hard work, at least with the rb or v8, they are common conversions

I hope you'll be changing the wheels as well as the engine :D
Gents.
I had a look at this yesterday. It's pretty rusty. I had a nose around it and in traditional Datsun style I had a few tugs at it underneath and ripped a few bits of the car off underneath and I ended up with a pile of rust in my face.
The welding work needed on this has to take place before anything and it's gonna be a fair old bit of work. It's going to the most time consuming bit of the project.
Engine choices can take place another day.
Actual_Ben_Taylor
23-08-2011, 14:31
That's exactly what I was thinking.
By the time the floors, sills, etc. have been replaced fossil fuels will be a distant memory :wack:

VH45DE is what I'm leaning towards  Although straight 6's do fit soooooo well in there  Its a tough call :( An L28 with the LD crank would be epic... then make a twin turbo setup :D
M3 engine in a TR6, not necessarily suggesting this engine but some inspirational pics.

Still at the sand blasters. It's partially my fault they are taking their time. Mainly I have too much shite in my unit and not enough room for this car at the moment. Should be ready for it this week though :)

Another engine to put thought to is the 1Uzfe been done a couple of times but the later VVTi engines can see good power with little effort and engines are bullet proof

Update :)
Anyhow I have the Z back :D
So tonight me, Paul_S13 and Rads hoovered all the sand blasting media out, this took ages :(
We then sprayed the inside with Zinc 182 Primer, this will keep the rust away until the welding is done and then the proper paint can go on :)
Next on the list is the Zinc primer the underneath of the car :)
