I wasn't going to do a project thread for this, as I've not got many plans for it, but then I'm sure Si probably said the same about his FD at one point :smash:

So, 31/12/2010 I collected this

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b151/turbo-tastic/2.jpg

1996 FD RX7 Type RB (not sure what that means to be honest)
17in Mazdaspeed MS-01 wheels with mint tyres
lowered on Bilsteins

It had a few mods
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b151/turbo-tastic/fdint.jpg
Touch screen, all singing DV headunit thing. i rarely get excited about ICE, but this is seriously cool IMO :D
Shortshifter and steering wheel.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b151/turbo-tastic/fd13b.jpg

Exhaust, filters, DV, intercooler etc, but no fueling/management etc

So first job was to source an Apexi Power FC. Easier said than done. Turns out ion 1996 Mazda changed the ECU, and finding the right one for my car was tricky, but Ed RX7 Parts came up trumps with one :)

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b151/turbo-tastic/102_1623.jpg

Then it was off to RE:Worx in Portsmouth to have the PFC fitted and mapped on thier rolling road. While it was there I also had it serviced and checked over.

So plugs, leads, fluids & filters + fitting and mapping of PFC = £600. Worth it though for the piece of mind that the 13B isn't going to explode in my face :D

Turns out it does need new shocks and 6 bushes @ £60 each :( I'm not bothered about the shocks as I was planning to get coilies anyway, but could do with not having to fork out £360 on bushes :( but it still drives better than 99% of all my other cars have, so I'm still happy :)

So after mapping, this was the result

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b151/turbo-tastic/Photo0217.jpg

290.5BHP at the wheels. Obviously another 9.5BHP would have been nice, but that is a good starting point.
Thats at 0.8bar, but as that was max'ing out the injectoers they turned it down to 0.7bar.

So injectors and fuel pump are next on the list, which should see me nicely over 300WHP, which would certainly keep me happy for a while :D

So the shopping list currently stands at

fuel pump - GOT (walbro meant for my S13 but never fitted)
injectors - need to research what I need etc, but expecting big ££ :(
coilovers - £500-£800 at a guess
bushes - £360 + fitting

As for list of plans, other than safely running over 300whp, fit my bucket seat, fix passenger doorcard (handle flaking off) and run some ducting around the intercooler, and thats it :)

We'll see where that takes me I guess :wack:

lush FD, getting me tempted to go down this route, but i keep hearing how unreliable they are.

Ed

FAO people worried about reliability issues

cant get the smile off my face knowing its parked on the drive.

This ^^^^ is all that matters :D  Never mind the speed, power delivery, sound and handling. Just walking out past it in the morning is enough to warrant whatever it throws at you. Speaking from my extensive experience of FD's you understand :smash:

But thanks for the kind words peeps :) Its fair to say I do like this quite a lot :smitten:

Awesome!

They look soooo good standard :smitten:

Injectors aren't too bad dude - will speak to you about it at the w/e :)
As for the bushes - it's the pillowballs I guess?

Ed
01-03-2011, 22:05
4 x rear arm bushes and 2 x toe link bushes. And they also confirmed what you said about the intercooler needing some ducting

But now I have a PFC I can see what difference the ducting makes to the intake temps :)

Dandan

you should only need 2 bigger injectors i think, primaries and secondaries are diff sizes. if you beef the smaller ones up to 850's you should be laughing. i could be wrong, i've a feeling ive forgotten more about rotaries than i've remembered... :)

oh and reworx do injector cldeaning so they might have some cheap second hand ones...

It baffles me when people fit kits to them - they're stunning with standard body/spoiler.

Just spent an hour re-reading this thread

3 years and 8months  These rotary builds seem to have a habit of costing thousands and taking bloody ages. What have I done :smash:

S13 walbro may not work on RX mate,

when my pump is gone down , i tried my friends FCs walbro , but it didn't worked out . after that i learned there is 2 kind of walbros. only 1 digit serial number changes between them

by the way , car is super cool , we only have five FDs in turkey :D

LOL. Mines just taken ages because I'm shit.

As for the fueling: needn't be expensive. As Dan says, there are 2 850's and 2 550's as standard. Cheap solution to more fuel is better pump, and replacing the 550's with 850's, which needs the primary rail milling for a few quid, and you'll be good to go.

yeah but you have to factor in my mate Rich's unbeleiveably slow work rate! if you compressed all the actual work we did down into one lump it probably took a week....
but yes, it did still cost around £9000, not including the latest rebuild!

Theres probably only 5 FDs on the road in UK too :wack: RE:Worx said that to use a Walbro in would need re-wiring, but its something they do regularly so not an issue. If there is not much ££ differene between paying RE:Worx to rewire the Walbro, or get a Bosch 044, i'll get a Bosch :)

I'm not too fussed about the cheapest solution, especially when fueling and engine longeivty (sp?) are concerned. But I wont be buying HKS Hyper Titanium Radiator caps etc either ;)

And yours has taken ages because you have an OCD. The first step to a cure dude, is admitting you have a problem

wait, £9k. Shit, I was only gonna set aside a rebuild budget of £5k :(

And its been rebuilt again since

In that case you need a BilletBitz secondary rail for about a ton, aeromotive fpr for about 150, and 2 1680cc Bosch objectors. Can prob retire your pump for you this weekend .)

Rail:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170539718459&refid=store

If you're on FDUK, have a word with 'FD3UK' - Kev at Billetbitz - I think he'll do them a bit cheaper on there :) Tell him Si sent you :)

Injectors:
http://www.mazdarotaryparts.com/brx-7-fd-bosch-1680cc-fuel-injectorsb-773-p.asp
You need 2 of these

Dandan
04-03-2011, 12:55
is that kev from poole? got lots of cosmo's? he's a nice guy if its him.

ed relax, that rebuild bill was so high cos it was basically an entire new engine, new plates and housings, gt35r, full exhaust, wastegate, hks f-con proV, fuel pump, injectors and rail, fpr, v mount, water injection, the works.
keep 3k aside for a stockish rebuild, me and rich will help you do it yourself so it won't cost that much anyway.
the thrown tip this time cost less than 1k to rebuild.

rich can wire that pump if si doesnt do it. :)

TBH dude, I reckon if I were to rebuild I'd need most of that anyway :( Except the F-Con proV :smash:

I suppose I could rebuild without going single turbo though.

Well, I've done nearly 400miles in the FD this weekend :) On the way up to my old dears I averaged 18mpg, and that included taking my brother out for a spin and about 40miles of dicking about around town down here in S'fampton during last week. So since getting it mapped I've gained 1mpg and more power :D

However on the drive back down this afternoon, I took it easy, 70-80 all the way and averaged 22.8mpg!!! Thats 5mpg more than driving like a granny before the mapping :D

And in other news, I picked up these little beuaties while I was "up North"

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b151/turbo-tastic/IMG_0939.jpg

17inch BBS RC090, 8J ET10 & 9J ET19  Only 1 problem with them (other than the state of them)

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b151/turbo-tastic/IMG_0941.jpg

Yup, they're 5x120 BM fitment. Just got to work out what size spacer adaptors I need now :D

zeppelin101
06-03-2011, 18:25
Surely you'll need 20mm to clear the studs at least and that will lead to somewhat retarded offsets? :smash: Or have the wheels got cutouts on the hub face?

Si

You're so in trouble dude :wack:

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b151/turbo-tastic/IMG_0942.jpg

So maybe I could just get the holes ovaled out to 5x114?? That way, just run a smaller spacer to fit clear the calipers on the front (wheel on the left in the pic above)??

Burnout wings I was talking about yesterday:
http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r30/Simon_r_hill/09072010414.jpg

Some of the only ones around for the FD that aren'y fcuking hideous.

Other ones are usually as ugly as this:

Sorry dude, buts FD's need to stay stock bodied IMO  Plus i haven't fitted a kit to a car in over a decade  Not going to start again now :D

The BBS's are a bit of a joke tbh. If I can get them onto the FD easy enough, they will go on, but more than likely I'll just put them on a BM I buy at some point in the future :wack: Wheel hoarding is for winners :D

Dandan
06-03-2011, 20:39
I want your ms-01's. That is all.

I know I have nothing to put them on, but wheel hoarding is for winners or something.

Ed
09-03-2011, 09:23
Right, I can get some PCD adaptors from the US in 15mm, so the wheels would be

8J ET-5 and 9J ET4

What do people think?

This FD (Mark Ricconi) runs 18x9.5 +30 front, 18x10in +15

http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs030.snc1/3196_154341340506_823980506_6404164_791166_n.jpg

Which means my 8J's will sit 16mm further out. arse. But the 9J rear will have 2mm more arch clearance.

No.
Remember the fronts on mine? 9.5 et25 :wack:

OK, small update.

While I'm cocking around out here in Spain, supposedly saving money to build my garage, but actually having the time of my life, I enlisted the services of Detailing Jem - Home (http://www.detailingjem.co.uk/) to go and give the car a full detailing session :)

these are the results
