okay okay, wiseguys... my camera is cheap and nasty, my foot however is clear of any disease that the photo may imply :)

It was a light hearted thread based on young petes posts of this here forum, no bitterness or nasty remarks intended here, just a wee joke...

That's because you have God's Own Transmission and aren't one of these sexually insecure types who feels the need to constantly push their left foot down and twiddle with their nobs and sticks.

hmmmm
its much better to twiddle as auto-boxes hiccup occasionally.
I'm a manual man myself, none of this fancy automation to upset my cornering balance thank you very much!

It looks like an EVIL foot... I bet it presses the Accelerator a little too much too at certain times... ;) Wonder if you could get away with a speeding fine/ban by saying that your foot was posessed... Would be funny in court though... LOL!!!

Hummmmmmmmm...... ;)

Good point, there, JB!

Also, I enjoy the no-hassle in-gear acceleration times

You may enjoy the ease.

Personally I prefer to have total control over my engine speed, and feel totally our of control having just two pedals.

Engine braking? Nah, just rely on the brakes and use your pads up on an auto - no thanks

Just use the overdrive; it's the same as going down the 'box :notworthy

No worries there, you'll never get me in an automatic.

Such a let down when you see a wicked car, then get let down by the fact its auto...

There speaks the voice of someone who doesn't knwo what he's on about.

Have you ever driven one to compare or are you basing this on your 'wealth of experience'? :p

SpeedyPete
14-07-2003, 13:09
I used to drive a pontiac Firebird on the odd weekend, a friend imported american cars.

Again, unless it was a massive jag or something thats a pain to drive round town up and down the gears, Im leaving autos where they are.

Frankly, and not offence to you JB, but I have little respect for drivers of autos simply because good driving (in the non highway code form) comes from good clutch/rev control. You dont have this control in an auto, instead you 'twist and go' like a moped. Mopeds have no respect in the motorcycle world, same difference.

Ah, so it IS based on your usual 'Wealth of Experience' then. Thought so

I dont have any wealth of experience, chance would be a fine thing.

I DO have a great wealth of opinion though :D

Oh, I thought you were the greatest living font of knowedge on cars. It's what your website claims anyway and as you wrote that I assumed you could at least be accurate about it.

NOW HOLD ON A MINUTE!

I can sense some 'talkingoutofyourarse-ness' going on here.

1) I wanted an MANUAL 200 and, after driving one, not only ended up buying an Auto but have bought 2 other Auto 200s since!!!

2) In gear acceleration is faster.

3) You CAN change down the box using the overdrive.

4) You can control when the car changes gear by using your right foot.

5) An Auto 200 can do upto 70mph in MANUAL gears.

6) How come a bloke in an Impreza Turbo I once wasted said he couldn't believe he'd been done by an Auto?

Thankyou -

:notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy

I wasn't after debating the auto manual thing I was just questioning Pete's knowledgebase.

Auto manual = horses for courses, each to there own.

Oh and Ripper I think you might want to edit the speed comment in your post mate

Leon

Auto Vs manual debates go on for ever.

However, in my experience (driving a vast range of cars in my last job), I prefer a manual box. Better for ripping into corners and powering away in my exp (even tho autos can be faster, like hte Yank Starions, coz the turbo is always on song).
I just don't like autos. I'll always remember a top of the range BMW, and then an Alfa, not being able to decide which gear to go into on an exeptionally tight Righthander, and all drive was lost for about 0.5s right on the apex, causing the balance of the car to alter. Fortunately, at that speed it was OK and could be held.

Plus the boxes are only as good as those who program them.

Have never driven a ***** tho so couldn't comment on them... Just BMW Merc and Lexus boxes... lol

sorry JB that wasnt aimed directly at you - and i can see why you are questioning Pete's knowledge

Horses for courses is exactly it - if speedyboy wants to do a lil more research let him go off, drive an auto, write up a comparison and then maybe he can post a conclusive argument based on fact :p In the meantime i think we can all leave the MANUAL/AUTO IS BETTER IMO wishwash to the previous threads ;):)

The handbook says 65mph in manual 2nd - that's 70+ on the speedo.
