View Full Version : ER34 4 door
Thought I'd stick up a thread about my new car as its 5 or 6 months since I sold my 180sx and yet I’m still on here everyday. I had my perfect 180sx a while back, no rust, mint pair of Bride Brix’s, Defi gauges and had just bought a set of Gram Lights for it.
Something wasn’t right though, I just didn’t enjoy it the way I did my UK S13 before it, or my old S14 either, so when I saw how cheap R34 4doors were going for in Japan I knew I had to have one!
The very day the 180 sold I bought this from Japanese Used Cars (traders on driftworks):

It’s a 1998 with RB25 NEO engine and auto/tiptronic gearbox. Pretty much standard apart from a Blitz Nur-Spec, Blitz Air filter and Blitz turbo timer.
These were the only two photos I saw of it before agreeing to buy, but it looked pretty decent and I had money burning a hole in my pocket so couldn’t resist!
Fast forward nearly 4months and I finally got down to Southampton docks to pick her up, I was so excited at this point I forgot to take any pictures! Before getting it on the road I wanted it fully checked over so that I could fix any underlying problems before spending any money on mods etc. So I decided to take it to Garage-D as there local to me (only 8 miles away) and really know their skylines! Quick pic of it over there the day I got it:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/04012011067.jpg
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/DSC09603-1.jpg
The news was pretty good, it’s all nice and solid underneath, no sign of crash damage and runs sweet, only issue was the Nur-Spec turned out to be just the back box rather than a whole system and Hicas ball joints on both sides were badly worn (common problem apparently). Rather than bothering trying to get hold of new ball joints a Driftworks total Hicas eliminator kit was supplied and fitted by Garage-D, and while it was all apart, a set of subframe locking collars thrown in for good measure!
She then got MOT’d and registered which brings it pretty much up to date, I've lots of plans with it, first mainly being a proper manual conversion as I can't stand the autobox, up the power a bit, few suspension tweeks and install a nice audio system! The main aim of the car is to be a good all rounder as I drive it everyday, will need to do a few long journeys in it (including Ireland and Scotland most likely) and also want to do a few drift and track days.
I’ve done a few more bits in the last couple of weeks, but I’m going to try get some up to date pictures in the next day or two before going on!
Until then I'll leave you with the only recent-ish picture I have, after giving her a quick wash (also you can just notice the factory fit Xenon headlights :D)

Good to see this on here mate, Car looks the nuts!!
Cheers Sam! Got a couple of pics at work today. The tyres on the standard wheels had seen better days but I couldnt see the point in buying tyres for the standard wheels so luckly a friend of mine had a set of Rotas for sale. I fitted them which then made the car look even higher off the ground, luckly I managed to pick up a set of lowering springs which will do me for a couple of months until I can get some coilovers. Anyway less talk, more pictures:

One thing I can't decide is whether or not to remove the spolier? Next time I've got a day off work Im going to take it off have a look to see what it looks like and decide then!
I like the spoiler as it is :)
Nice car. Do you mind if I ask how much it cost?

Would love one of these, how tunable are the neo6 engines? or is a RB on the cards after the manual?

Cheers Daz, all in for the car, shipping, import duty and VAT (got in just before the VAT increase luckly :smash:) about £4500ish. Manuals in good condition were going for £1500+ more so I thought it best to get a auto and convert it over here.

Dont know if I mentioned but mines a turbo anyway, so just as tuneable if not more so than the RB25's from R33's I reckon. The NEO's supposidly have better rods, not sure about the pistons, solid lifters, and a few other differneces in the head. So should be interesting to see what sort of power it makes after a few basic mods :)

Awesome stuff and suprisingly cheap too? Who was it you dealt with, with regards to importing and everything was it pretty much hassle free too? On a side note I'd vote for no spoilorzzzz

Thanks for that. What was the cost of the car before all the shipping etc? Reason I ask is because I stupidly looked on the site and spotted a lovely White S15 Spec R Aero for not alot of cash lol. I need to convince myself that it's a bad idea to look on that site :wack:

I got the car from Japanese Used Cars they got the car on to the boat and sent me all the paper work, I then contacted Rob Barnes at Kleerfreight who organised the custom forms and payments. Both companies I'd highly recommend, first time I've imported a car and was so much easier than I thought it would be!

The car was about £2900 before everything, there is a calculator on JUC's website that calcualtes roughly the amount of tax etc you have to pay so it gives you a good idea. Don't take it as gospel though, as mine worked out a few hundred more than the calculator said, but either way I still think I got a good deal!
I really like this:nod: Im actually jealous tbh:wack:
Good to see you putting up a thread on it Daz, should really get mine sorted  . Hmm tricky one regarding the spoiler, take a picture on your day off and ill have a look at it when i see you :) actually what day is your day off? May pop over and give a hand/stand there and smoke like normal lol. Im not sure if im a fan of the spoiler itself, however i think the car would suit some kind of spoiler

I wish I hadn't of done that............£4.7k for a Grade 4 S15 Spec R Aero to get it over here :(
Quick update, firstly I’ve got to say a big thanks to Samcash88 for his help and letting me use his garage! Ever since I had the locking collars fitted I’ve had a really bad transmission noise coming through the car, also as I will be using the car for a few long journeys I wanted it a bit quieter in the cabin, so after reading Si’s FD project I decided to invest in some sound deadening, so bought some of this:
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/silent-coat-mat-bulk-pack.html
It is a bit expensive, but as I’m going to be putting a half decent sound system (don’t worry it wont’ be a full on boot full of fibreglass type job ) in it I thought It would be worth it. So made a start on it:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/photo-1-1.jpg
After getting back ache from leaning in the boot, decided it would be easier to just get in there! lol. As you can see, it is quite a big boot, (that and I am quite small :smash:).
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/photo-2.jpg
Overall came out quite well, also did all of underneath the back seats and both front doors (didn’t get any pics as it got quite late!) and still have some left over, not bad value I think!
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/photo-2-1.jpg
(Also in the left on the above picture you can see the factory bracing in the boot, similar to the S15 Spec R, was a nice find!)
I did worry about the weight tbh, its quoted at all in weighing 12kg however the box felt like nearer 20kg! So I’m going to remove the spare wheel and scissor jack and carry a can of tyre weld so hopefully it will balance out!
Also took after the spoiler, everyone I’ve spoken to has agreed it looks much so its going to stay off, just need to get the holes welded up and painted as the bungs covered in Tipex don’t exactly look neat lol
Sorry I couldn’t get a better pic, but the car was filthy and it was dark!

so what did you use to push the sound deading down?? and how much did you buy to do all that??
Used a hair dryer to heat it up first to get it extra sticky then just used our hands to push/spread it down etc, I know I should have used a roller, but ive been doing it like this for a good few years now and never had any come off etc.
I bought the pack in the link which had 40 sheets in it, and after doing the whole of the boot, under and up the back of the rear seats and both front doors I still have 6 or so sheets left.

Interested to know how effective it is, tempted to relay my floor and tunnel and rear seat sections with some to make my 13 a little more sociable on long journeys.
It has made quite a difference from what i could tell, i mean i only drove it in a car park earlier but from what i remember sounds much quieter than i remember when daz took me out in it. Pretty sure he said earlier it has made a big difference to road/exhaust noise  it is worth doing, i personally wouldnt because im not too bothered by loud noises from my car....but if it did i would!
Yep should have really mentioned the differnce its made. As Callum said above, the road and exhaust nosie is noticebly quieter, the transmission noise is still there however, but it is deffinietly better than before, overall I am very happy with it :)
Not sure if I should use the remaining sheets on either the rear doors or the roof?
These are really growing on me, never liked them when i was younger but they have some serious potential.
Heres one thats kinda local to me looks mean as f*ck running 380 with a top mount apexi turbo
http://i53.tinypic.com/imknxl.jpg
http://i51.tinypic.com/vifqs5.jpg
^^ That is cool  Im exactly the same, a few years ago i would have not really like daz's (or the above) car, but now i do! Cant wait till its finished * should look savage!
* - by finished, daz never "finishes" More just keeps adding/removing bits till selling lol.
Yup, the sound deadening is top stuff!
Having driven mine with it now, i reckon it's reduced the drone and resonance quite a noticeable amount. It's a much nicer place to be inside
I reckon doors could be the best bet for the leftovers - although not sure how far 6 sheets will get you. I managed to do most of my FD with my bulk pack, but it's a tiny car! Especially next to an R34!
For application tools, if you want to stop cutting your hands quite so much, either buy a castor from machine mart for about 2 quid and screw it into a bit of 2x2, or, the easier way, buy an 'edge roller' from B&Q - about a fiver :)

I'm more concerned with being able to hold a conversation with people in the car on a journey and not arriving at my destination with a blistering headache in all honesty :smash:
For £80, sounds like you can't go wrong!

Thats exactly what I needed it for, I never really noticed the noise when I was on my own, but as soon as I had a passenger I realised we had to raise our voices. Havn't had any long journeys since yet, but it deffinitely seems much better.

The NEO is a bit of a shit to tune :( it doesnt share much with the RB25 from the R33 and i dont think there are many parts available for it.
You can still get them up to 500+ but its not cheap :(
First job is to ditch the turbo as it a ceramic core so cant handle any more than a bar boost.
If you need any advice on them ask Bubble on here as he did everything possible to his before binning it for a RB30
Lovely car though, didnt realise they was so cheap now.

Yep, anything over 30mph in mine = shouting. Gets tiring very quickly. Still, might as well try the whole utterly stripped out and no sound deadening thing before writing it off as a dumb thing to do right? :wack:
Small update! For the last week or so the car has been slower and slower to start until last might when it refused to start at all, time for a new battery then. I also thought it was a good time to make use of the DB Power relocation kit I’ve had knocking about since I had my Sil80 nearly 2 years ago, as unlike R33 (and maybe 32?) Skylines, the battery is in the front on my R34.
When I did the relocation in my Sil80 It was a bit of rush job and looked quite messy so I was determined to make this one look a bit neater. Firstly I made up a bracket to hold the battery out of a metal base that used to hold down the CD changer, and the standard clamp, was quite3 pleased with my work:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/10032011018.jpg
Then I ran the power cable down the car and connected it to the standard +ve battery terminal, hid it in the little black box and stuck it to the fuse box:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/10032011020.jpg
I put the metal bracket under the carpet to look neat and put the metal bars up through the carpet, also as you can see I mounted the circuit breaker in the boot, its hidden when you look in usually but still accessible.
Then all I had to do was run the earth and it was job done!
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/10032011023.jpg
Overall nice and neat I think, and I now have space under my bonnet for when I need to run the intercooler pipe through when I get a FMIC. There is also space for when/if I fit a catch tank.

Nice and neat mate!! Looks a very tidy job! I knew that bracket would come in useful!
Time for a bit of an update! Not long after I fitted the lowering springs one of the shocks started leaking, wasn’t too bad at first, but over the last week or so it got quite bad so was time to upgrade! Went to Garage-D as Julian mentioned he has some Tein coilovers, wasn’t too keen at first as for some reason I thought they were going to be very stiff but I took the car that they were on for a spin and was pleasantly surprised!
As they were already on a car I did the swap over there in the car park as he needed my old shocks and springs to fit back on the other car, didn’t get too many pics as I was filthy dirty and it was getting late, but heres one anyway:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/19042011060.jpg
So let them settle for a few days and decided the rear needed to come down a fair bit, so this evening tried to lower them, and failed pretty miserably :(.
Firstly a big thanks to Dan@DBpower for lending me a C-spanner, Samcash88 for letting me use his driveway and tools and Tobrien1 for coming over and lending a hand.
No matter what we tried though, despite the coilover threads looking surprisingly clean, we could only get one collar to move, the other looks like it has been lock-tite’d on! After nearly two hours we had to admit defeat, so I’m going to have to take them off again and bring them back to Garage-D to free them up! More pics to come when its lowered of course! Until then the only couple of pics I took today:

Pain in the arse that was! Still though, will be worth it. It's moving in the right direction!
Cheers Tom! Also, even though Im not really in to stickers, saw one a few weeks back that suited the car so had to have it:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/198942_10150448529005444_671265443_17951416_128251 _n.jpg
Pretty happy with it as I can just point to it now when people ask me why I bought a 4 door instead of the 2 door!
awesome car,even more awesome sticker:D
Pretty big (and by far the best update) here!! Dropped the car down to Dan@DBpower’s new unit on Wednesday morning for the manual conversion. Have to say Dan is an absolute Legend! By Thursday the old box was off, new pedals were in, new lightened flywheel on, BUT the clutch (ACT paddle) still hadn’t arrived, so Dan drove all the way down to Essex just to pick it up so it could be ready for Saturday for Japfest. He then even continued working on it until nearly 10pm last night and was in again very early this morning, so another huge thanks to Dan
I went over there today, as Dan was finishing up to help bleed the clutch and put the interior bits back in. Took it for a quick test drive down the road and everything works fine including the speedo and reverse lights, don’t you just love it when a job goes right first time!
All I’ve got left to do now is make a gear gaitor fit, I might try use a S13 or 14 one as I cant see it being that different. Other than that I just need to clock up some miles to bed in the clutch before the journey to Japfest tomorrow where I’ll be on the club stand, so if you see me with the car pop over and say hello!
Next on the list is alignment as I’m getting some pretty uneven tyre wear, I’m going to need some camber arms, so the car will be going to GarageD as they now do alignments, to supply and fit some Driftworks camber arms (to match my driftworks Hicas eliminator) and for aligning!
A few pics from the last few days:

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/13052011091.jpg
also as these pics are pretty boring, here are a couple of pics someone on Skyline owners took at BDC round 1 a coulpe of weeks ago:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/IMAG0640-Copy.jpg

Since doing the manual conversion I have never had a gear stick gaiter so yesterday decided to knock one up. I was going to just use a piece of black leather but Samcash88 came up with the idea of doing a black suede quilted gaiter! Sounded a bit ambitious I thought but it was raining out and had nothing else to do so gave it a go! Cue me getting quite excited using a machine with a peddle lol:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/sweingmachine.jpg
Which after lots of work turned out like this: pretty cool and VIP looking almost I think!
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/geargaitor.jpg
Then decided that we would have to do the hand brake gaiter to match:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/gaitors.jpg
And then got a bit carried away and did the armrest as well!
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/19062011117.jpg
Really happy with how it came out, looks a lot better than before when it was missing the gaiter. Sam was trying to talk me in to doing the door cards and roof lining to match, but going to stop there though I think for the time being anyway!
Also on a not so good note, I fitted a Walbro last night and now have a slight hesitation/misfire when initially accelerating :( I fitted the original Nissan sock to the Walbro and all the connections seem fine, apparently this is not unknown though and is usually cured by running a new ground from the pump straight to the body of the car. So what I’m going to do is hardwire the pump from the battery (relatively easy now the battery is in the boot) with a relay etc and also fit a new filter as I don’t know when it was last (if ever?) changed. Hopefully this will cure it as I’m driving it to Ireland again in two weeks and really need to get it sorted before then. Will keep you update with how I get on! :sxoc:

Dublin, pretty much all my family is over there, also go to Waterford occasionally, again have family down there aswell.
Bought myself Lots of cable, connectors, fuses and a relay etc and set about hardwiring my fuel pump this evening! Did it all together without hiding any wires etc first, as I wanted to make sure it actually worked. Looking a bit messy:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/20062011121.jpg
I spent lots of time researching it last night on here and Skyline Owners and drew a few diagrams so I knew what went where etc and it seemed to pay off as when we fired it up it started first time! It is noticeably louder so definitely seems to have made some difference, so tidied up the wiring. Still not really what you’d call neat, but I wanted to leave it accessible in case it didn’t fix the hesitation and I’d have to take the pump out again:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/IMPORT-SIRION/20062011122.jpg
Let it warm up for minute or two and then took it for spin and instantly noticed the difference! No more hesitation/misfire and seems to drive/pull smoother (not sure if that is just psychological, but I’m sure it feels better!). Im going to try get it on a rolling road asap to make sure its fuelling okay but overall I’m chuffed (and slightly relieved)!
Yeah that's a bit of a mess in your boot lol.loving the route you took with doing the sound deadening I plan on doing the same to mine.
You should check out the Ireland section for east meets would be cool to get members from the uk involved.

Yep, its still working well though so ill knock up a carpet panel to hide it, if Samcash88 gets his way though that will probably end up getting quilted aswell :wack:

Oh ok that makes me less oblivious than normal lol. Looks smart mate, i mean this nicely: it suits you :) if you get what i mean? maybe Sam will lol
Took the car down to Red Dot to get the fuelling checked and see what sort of power it was making. Luckily its all running fine, no Det and nice safe AFR’s. Tried to photograph the printout but I cant seem to get a clear picture of it, I’ll try get a picture up somehow though. Made 261bhp, little bit lower than I was expecting, but after reading lots of bad stories about RB's blowing up Im just happy its all safe!
Also when changing the fuel filter I very slightly damaged one of the pipes, it didn’t leak, but I wasn’t happy with it so decided to change the pipes for braided pipes. I did a bit of reading on here about braided fuel lines and saying to avoid them, as they can leak etc so I ended up going for rubber pipes with the braiding on the outside still. They are still 8mm I/D so fit fine but have a thicker wall so should hopefully be safe next time I attack them with pliers trying to remove the filter!

Pretty good day all in! That’s all for the next couple of weeks as I’m off to Ireland on Saturday and any time I work on a car the day before a long journey, something always goes wrong!
Havn’t updated this in a while, havn’t actually done much to it as I’ve been too busy driving and enjoying it! Took it to Ireland, down to the Isle of Wight, Santa Pod a good few times and Just got back from BDC at Sunderland Nissan Factory last weekend. Car hasn’t missed a beat and not a single thing has gone wrong which is rare for one of my cars so to say I’m happy with it is an understatement!
One thing that has been lacking with it though is the sound system, so I decided to get cracking with getting improved. I had an old Sony HU in there for a while but really fancied a double din so picked this up from work:

And also ordered a pair of Focal PS165 components and made up some MDF rings to fit them in to the door with. The doors already had sound deadening in them luckily, from when I sound deadened the boot.

Just waiting on my old Infinity 6 channel amp to come back from repair and I can get that in along with a sub and hopefully I will have some decent sounds to keep me going on my roadtrips! Lol
Also since having the manual conversion done I noticed the gearbox mount was not quite as stiff as I would have liked so replaced it with one of DB Powers uprated ones, now feels much better as before I could feel the box moving a bit when coming off throttle to change gear no it feels nice and solid!

And finally today, set about the task of fitting a FMIC, was quite impressed with myself got it all done in just over 4 hours which included a trip to DB power to borrow an angle grinder and hole cutter from Dan! Didn’t take many pics but here a few during the middle of doing it.

Also like on S-Body FMIC kits, the original washer bottle doesn’t fit, so I came up with an awesome idea to make a new! Will let the pics explain:

Have taken the car for a spin and it all feels fine so next on the list is a HKS actuator then off to a rolling road again to raise the boost slightly and get it running safely. Still havn’t decided whether or not to just put an adjustable FPR on it and just get it set up with that or if I should bring it to Greg at ProTuner and get Nistune fitted and mapped? Nistune would obviously be the better option but just wondering if it’s a bit overkill seeing as I’m still on standard Turbo, Injectors, AFM etc?
Yet another long journey done in the car with no troubles! Drove down to Newquay for a couple of days at the beginning of the month and even managed to average 27.5 mpg which is much better than any previous long trip so I’m still happy :D
Since the car came from Japan the only part of the exhaust that had been changed was the back box. It is a Blitz NurSpec that had been welded on to the standard pipework. Have wanted to get the rest of it sorted for ages but Japspeed were out of downpipes, so I held off for a while. After lots of waiting they were still out of stock but luckily I came across a second hand one on Skyline Owners. So I bought that along with a new elbow and de-cat, and set off to DB-Power to fit the lot (can’t be arsed with laying on my back under cars on my drive way in the cold too much these days lol :smash:)
Dan grinding off the first rounded/seized bolt that we’ve come across on this car:

The new elbow in place:

That’s where the pics stopped as it soon became a massive PITA! The downpipe didn’t fit at all, and we had to cut two massive cuts in to it, bend it in to the correct shape and weld it back together! Massive thanks to Dan for that as I would never have been able to do that myself seeing as I don’t have a welder (and don’t even know how to weld anyway :wack:)
Got it sorted anyway and was happy for a couple of weeks, but now decided I needed to get rid of the old standard centre pipe. Went to Top Gear in St Albans (who have been taken over by EMP Performance, who have a much better rep than the old owner there!) who did a top job in knocking up a pipe from my de-cat up to the back box. Didn’t take any pics while it was being done as I left them to it, but a quick pic I grabbed from underneath today. 3” pipework, TIG welded and good ground clearance still!:

Next on the list is get it back on the rolling road and see if its all safe still, feels like there is less lag now with the exhaust, but there is a bit of an annoying flat spot around 5k, which a new set of NGK grade 7’s improved but didn’t cure, so want to get that seen to really.
