View Full Version : Dilemma - What garage door size?

Had a bit of a moment today. The garage is about 14ft wide, internally. A car is comfortably 6ft6in wide. In theory I could fit 2 cars in, side by side. It would be a squeeze, and would only serve as storage as there would be zero room to do anything else.
I realised that the garage door in my new garage is going to be 8ft wide. I suppose I just assumed that it would be as wide as the front of the building, but it's barely half that. So, what to do? Price options are:
9' Wide - £295.00 extra
10' Wide - £607.00 extra
12' - £702.00 extra
My thoughts are:
9' - £300 for not much more
10' - £600, now we're getting closer but if you were spending £600, why wouldn't you go to 12' for a touch more
12' - £700 is a lot of cash, and still doesn't quite max it out. I'd never be able to drive in close to the wall and then maneover another car in next to it, so it wouldn't solbe the problem, although a wider door would be nice.
So I think sack it off, stick with 8ft, which is wide enough to get a car in at an angle if I so wish, and accept that the thoughts of having storage for 2 side by side isn't going to happen. The pit is central, so no implications there.
Any other thoughts?
The wider door is nice, but as you say, two cars arent going to fit side by side.
However, the manauvreability that it would give you for shunting about and getting the car where you want it is invaluable.
Nothing on ebay? (power zappy door is nice too, but thats just being flash...;))

Well, I'm kind of stuck with the doors supplied by the garage company who are building the garage, so ebay isn't a goer.
Deffo the 12'r stob being so gay. 12' will allow you to park a car then manoeuvre a motor bike or something large out the garage without twattingbthe car

Everything I do turns into a money pit....
you build a semi detatched mansion for your projects and then moan about a £700 door...:wack:
LOL!! ;)
It's only £400 more that's nothing. You could earn that in a month stacking shelves at tesco in the evening. Or buy a car with no mot, using your garage to sort it and sell it for £400 more

 It's £700 more. I have paid for a garage that comes with an 8ft door. Those prices are upgrade costs from 8ft to 9ft, 10ft and 12ft
And that's £700 I don't have right now :(
But I agree, it's another of those "I'll be here for another 20 years, so that's £30 a year"
Ah I see ........ Get the 12' er :D
What about getting the maximum opening possible, then having wooden barn style doors on? Be even better for manuvering and look more classy than a fiberglass job

Well, I'm sort of limited to what the garage supply can do, as it's a package. I suppose there might be an option to have it with no door and just a 12' opening. Even then barn type doors aren't really an option, as there's a slope as you go into the garage, so they wouldn't open outward. It's up an over or nothing, and to be honest the costs and ballache of sourcing and fitting my own probably isn't worth it, especially with warranties etc.

Mate of mine used to have a garage where he parked his old sierra in, there was approx 8 inches of room either side to get your butt past when squeezing out of the building.
That gets very very annoying very very quickly, i suspect you will be begging for the larger doors pretty soon :wack:

If you can go with the 'no door' option have you thought about an electric operated roller shutter?
not exactly sure how much they cost but fitting and wiring is piss easy - I'll write you a how-to guide if you need (I make/fit industrial shutters)
Around £2k for electric roller ..... 'slot more than an up and over
what about a manual roller door? shurely that can be had cheaper? like the black/white ones used by shops

I've emailed the garage supplier to see it they can deliver and erect it but leave a 12ft gap at the front. Not sure if they'll go for it, but might be good if they can knock some off the price I've already paid as they won't need to supply the 8ft door, or fit it.

Well, in the end I went for the 12ft door, supplied by the folk building the garage. Should all be here at the beginning of march! :)
If it's 12' in the middle of a 14' wall, that's only 1' of wall either end, so with a bit of manoeuvring you should get two cars in, or slide one across on some wheel dollies or even a trolley jack.

That's what I'm hoping, although it isn't a massive priority. Would be nice though, if we went away, to be able to secure another car, as well as making it complicated to get anything out of the garage.
You did the right thing, you would have cursed at some point in the future if you'd gone for the narrower doors.
Just make sure the door has good securing bolts at each side as single doors are allegedly very easy to bend and gain access.

I'll be fitting my own aftermarket bolts on the inside, so that the only means of opening it is to go through the PA door on the side and then open it from the inside.
I used these (http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showpost.php?p=5455987&postcount=35) and they're really good.

Cheers :) TBH, I don't think I even want it to be obvious where the bolts are from the outside.
Visual deterrent works for me as well and why I have bars on the outside of the windows rather than discretely inside.
