View Full Version : Not 1000bhp per ton - but its got a Nissan engine :p
We've been working on an SR powered Westfield recently and thought people might be interested in the work we've done so far.
This is how it was delivered to us:

Some of the structural parts of the chassis had been hacked out so we had re engineer these parts:
http://www.h-dev.co.uk/images/westfield/dodgy chassis.jpg
The inside of the car wasn't much better:
http://www.h-dev.co.uk/images/westfield/transmission tunnel.jpg
Some of the suspension arms were bents:
http://www.h-dev.co.uk/images/westfield/bent arm.jpg
We had to strip the whole car down, clean everything, sand back the chassis to metal and respray.
We then made new engine mounts:
http://www.h-dev.co.uk/images/westfield/engine mount.jpg
http://www.h-dev.co.uk/images/westfield/box mount.jpg
The original engine was scrap, so we built another one:
http://www.h-dev.co.uk/images/westfield/engine.jpg
Fitted it:

http://www.h-dev.co.uk/images/westfield/engine in.jpg
Got the intercooler and rad mounted:
http://www.h-dev.co.uk/images/westfield/engine in with rad+cooler.jpg
Made up the pipe work. Just hope the radiator is big enough to keep it all cool, especially with the IC in front. You can just about make out that we've fitted an Accusump to help prevent oil starvation. We suffered oil feed problem with my S13 on fast corners - this car should be similar power to weight so we wanted to minimise the chance of it happening here.

We're about to finish off the brake pipe work as this was also unusable. My next job will be to make up the dash board - we're ditching the original and going with a carbon dash board, digi dash and some nice push button switches - similar to this:

The amount of time spent on this project has been immense - mainly because everything needed re-doing. Should be great when its done though.
I'll update with more pics as we go :)
now that looks mint, definitely the way to go too with the strip down, that loom looked a right mess,
are you making a whole new loom?
are you making a whole new loom?Yeah, pretty much - we'll use a std Nissan engine loom but modify it for the Westfield chassis. Then hopefully tidy up whats left of the Westfield lighting loom and modify as appropriate. Going to try to hide away most of the relays and fuses etc so it all looks neat.
Nice work:thumbs:
What sort of power are you going for?
is it still on stock management then? be a shame not to fit something aftermarket. they always seem a lot neater
It'll be 250-300bhp. The owner hasn't driven on track before so it should be quite funny to watch. Might have to wedge the wastegate open initially. Even at 150bhp it'll be 300bhp a ton...

It'll be on standard management - it'll be adequate for now and still be pretty neat.

That will be more than enough, 150bhp makes for a quick 7 type car, 300bhp makes them VERY quick!
I'd love to do something like this one day. How many hours has it taken so far?
I thought the idea with kit cars is to have a light engine? Is the SR suitable?
Not sure to be honest - I think it'd have been quicker to built it from scratch.
I don't really know how the weight of the SR compares to other more conventional engines. Probably not a huge amount in it and having almost double the power of the NA engine will help.
I'll get it on the scales when we're done.
Has to be around 10hrs at least I guess?
If someone was do to this in their spare time I guess it'd take many, many months.
Has to be around 10hrs at least I guess?LOL - more like 100.
Oh right lol
I didn't see the sand back chassis bit. :o
Or the engine rebuild bit :)
Everything takes ages because so much is custom made.
Yeah, that too. :o
Think I'll re-read it again when I'm awake.

some nice work you've done there
I assume that's your new engine mount vs what it came with - can't believe someone would make that and think it good
looks like it was made well initially and whoever decided to fit the SR afterwards wasn't really up to the job

Cheers - most of the credit goes to Kyle though, he's been doing the majority of the work :)
Yeah, new and old mounts
Very impressive. I bought a westfield last summer with a poxy little 1.7 ford cross-flow, this thing will be fing immense.
I've often thought about dropping in my 300bhp ca from my old s13, but as you said about the radiator, was allways worried that i couldnt get a bigger enough intercooler and rad in (that and not haveing the mechanical skill).
I allways thought if i did it it would probably have to have an exposed airfilter as you see on a lot of the 7 cars, pretruding from the bodywork. Is the positioning of the air filter in the pictures the final positioning? if so you're obviously confident it will have enough cold air flow positioned there?
Dans old westfield? If so remember going out in it running a pretty much standard SR and was the quickest thing i've ever been in! Cant begin to imagine what it will be like with more power!
Is the positioning of the air filter in the pictures the final positioning? if so you're obviously confident it will have enough cold air flow positioned there? It'll prob be a little higher than it is - not made the brackets up yet. Even if it is a bit warmer than ideal it'll still go bloody well.
Cant begin to imagine what it will be like with more power! It should be good fun :)

This thread wouldn't have anything to do with a facebook comment would it? ;)
Ha ha - no. I posted this before your Facebook coment :p

Ah so you did, my bad Jez!
Looking really tidy mate
Kyle has done some really nice fab work.
My only concern is that it might be a little underpowered ;)

yeah my old Westy.
When I built the car it was built for performance and not for looks. Also didn't help that I had such limited time to build the car in :(
anyhow excuse the workmanship, it was a case of it's my car and it performed as it should :D the only car I've ever driven which put a smile on my face everytime I got out of it :D
Although the engine mount doesn't look pretty, try breaking it ;)
Anyhow keep up the good work Jez :) nice to see it being done as it should have been :)
Dan
Cheers Dan - you're right - it's taking bloody ages :)
Started cutting up the carbon dashboard today:

Going to fit the digi dash later on when we've finalised the position of the steering column.
Nice buttons. What does the one without an icon do, top right? Hopefully not an oil slick :)
10 hours! :D Ahahahahah :D
I hope the customers got big pockets
Looks very cool though, very neat, impressive :)

Main beam flash - can't get momentary switches with the right symbols unfortunately.
Sounds like an interesting project, although, watched this last night:

I think he's right - its going to be a bastard to drive. Fun though :D
On Anthonys turbo hayabusa we're going for drive by wire throttle, so we can (hopefully) get it drivable and avoid the "first 20% of throttle movement does 100% of the power" problem that most turbo engines have. We'll see.

Looking sweet. What suspension is the rear ? deDion ?
Yeh, I've no doubt it will be fun to drive with the throttle issue fixed

Pretty trick for a kit car. :)
Hopefully it'll all work well :)
Just mocked up the switch lighting (can't embed for some reason)

Still got to be lighter than my Xflow was, that made just shy of 150Bhp and we all saw how quick she was at the various weekenders :D
300bhp will be epic in that
The first few pictures really make me appreciate the skill of the guy that rebuilt mine in ally - wish I still had her :(
Quick update.
Got almost all the electrics sorted now - includes all the body work lights, horn, fan, dash board, engine loom etc.
Started it up for the first time today - without the exhaust :D
