View Full Version : 30mph
The speedlimit is 30mph on a typical urban road - what speed do you normally do?
Obvious factors such as the exact location of this imaginary road have a factor (such as schools, pedestrian), but take this as your 'average' road with nothing of particular interest or concern on it.
I know when I drive past a schools/on narrow roads/by lots of people, my speed drops to around 25mph, sometimes slower depending on conditions.
I always try and stick to 30mph unless theres a huge queue of traffic behind me or it's a 30 in the country with nothing around, then about 35. I generally try to obey 30 and 40 limits.

30-32 for me. Always stick to the limit in a 30 and 40 zone. 25 if there's a speed camera nearby :D

I stick to 30 or alot less on my way to work, mostly because I never use boost or revs above 2500rpm untill my cars warmed up, and my journey to work only takes about 10 mins.. If I'm being honest, when the car is warmed up I tend to go a little faster.. I'd like to say it only went up a couple of MPH, but I'd be lieing. I take my surroundings into account to judge the speed I'm comfortable driving at.. like past schools it'll usually be 25, and past this 1 school, where there are quite a few double parked cars, I reduce the speed even more (this rd has since had speedbumps installed because idiots used to race down it on thier rat run.)
I know that most men think that they are the worlds best drivers, but I honestly consider myself to be very aware of my surroundings, and I try to always expect the unexpected.

in a 30 mph zone... if theres houses parked cars etc, ill keep below 30 mph but if its a nice wide open stretch ill be crusing at about 34 leptons... :)
eg - local road, joining 2 villages no houses, just fields - 2 years ago was national speed limit... now 30mph - there have been 2 accidents on that road... both only involving the astra GTE, or max power ford escort and understeer...
I stay as close to 30 as appropriate for the time and location etc.
:( There isn't an option for me.
I'll resist the temptation to live up to my sig and say that I never do less than 70 in a built up area.
I try never to exceed 30 by more than a couple of mph, but to be honest I concentrate on the road, not the speedo. Quite often I go well below the limit because it isn't safe to do anywhere near 30 (outside schools, on road with cars parked both sides etc etc.)
So basically I go as fast as the conditions and law allows.
When I did my advanced driver course I stuck rigidly to the speed limits .... for a few months, but I have to confess that my speeds have 'drifted' :D a little now.

Gotta be 30 or less.
I'll go quick out of town.
Sometimes 30 is too quick in some 30 zones, so sometimes less.
bit more than 30 to allow for the calibration error of speedometer.
having done advanced driving, defensive driving, aggressive driving and high speed driving courses, i feel pretty much in control.
I'm just hanging onto my licence by a thread so 30 it is.

I drive at speeds appropriate for the conditions. For instance, outside an infant school with arsewit 4x4s and very little space to see kids suddenly run out i'll do 5mph in a 30mph.
Otherwise assuming no police or gatsos, I do a speed that is safe for the conditions. eg wide straight empty road in middle of night, you'd be having a laugh if you expect me to stick to 30. Yep I'd do 30.1 :P
It annoys me that some roads that were previously national speed limits have been reduced to say 50 when it's really easy to safely do 90, for instance. ie the A3. Still, on the A3 under those underpasses you'll catch me doing 40 in first gear :D
We have 20mph limits in Salisbury (although all BBCs seem unaware of it). I still to it. In other 30 limits, I will do 30ish.
I wonder who the five people who chose More than 40 are?

Quite.
The streets round where I live are all 30mph limits but if you do more than 25mph you're just begging for a nipper to run out from between all the parked cars. You also have to allow for other people coming the other way who have an underdeveloped Bristol-driving skill, if not you'll be in a nearside front collision before you know it cos there are so many roads where two cars can't pass.
On the other hand if the road is wide enough to pass, the line of sight is good and there are no pedestrians about I'll do up to 45 in a 30 zone. All about context innit.

Those 20MPH limits are local by laws, and uninforcable by the police.... they will get ya if you do over 30 in em though!!
Still, is best to keep to the 20's iirc there normally schools/high density pedestrian area's in Salisbury.
There's so many fecking ramps and calming measures in Salisbury that you'd be mad to do over 20... Anyway, back to the BBCs...
Its only a matter of time for the 20 limits to be enforceable.

Depends realy, it can vary from 20~25 to 40~45 depending on where and when I am. before you all go off one about the 45 there is a road here with no houses on it just big fields either side with excellent visabilty. it should no way be a 30mph stretch of road.
