Had a good 4" of snow so far and it's still tipping down. I attempted to leave for work at about 7 but it was a stupid move. Managed to get out onto the main road but even that is just covered with snow and the car was just wheel spinning to try and maintain 10mph so I decided to turn around and come home. The as I pulled up the car slid striaght into the curb, hope i've not done any damage but it was quite a knock!!

good luck with that mate.

Went fine, and on the return journey I just drove past the queue using the unploughed lane. Didn't even have to put the chains on.

Only problem I had was having .to pull over to let some knob in an X5 overtake as he was driving right up my chuff on low profile tyres.

Nokian WR-G2 tyres FTW.

well just took the 14a out and all was fine, and drifting corners great lol. Only thing that defeated me was getting back into the court yard, it has a dropped curb, and i could not get up it.
So a quick call to the oldman to get a shovel and 30 mins later the 14a was back at home. Now its hammering down even harder.

The reason there is nothing on the bonnet is the vast quantity of heat produced by trying to propel the car by reaction force from snow alone :D Which worked, since I got the bloody thing back on the drive way :smash:

Had 4 -6 inches here with more forecast for tomorrow. Looks like I will not be fixing the Astra. It's up at my sister's, most likely snowed in.:annoyed: And no post, so still awaiting the last part.:furious: which was posted 1st. class on Tuesday.

It snowed here last night - we got about 8mm.
It hasn't got above 0C today and everthing is still an Ice rink.

I just spotted a Subaru Legacy with lots of 6-8" Icicles hanging off it like fancy Xmas decorations :wack:

Got to work out of about 8-10 inches this morning, in work now there's been 2-3 more inches, still not sent home... howzat work?!

Chris
17-12-2010, 15:32
About 6" of snow on the other halfs car at 7.45 am but none on mine as it was in the garage :D 15 miles and 20 minutes later my car was in work and still clear of snow but by 10.30 there was 4" on it , By 11 it was 6" then it started to thaw :indiff: But not for long :D

I had sod all work to do apart from unflooding the bosses sh1tara so boredom kicked in and I decided to give my savage a few laps of the forecourt and found it to be very capable even in 12" drifts

By 2.30 we decided to close but the 14 with by now 8" of snow on the roof and its front mount snow cooled intercooler/snowplough was going nowhere :( We managed to tuck it up safe in the garage tho

With no transport home plan b and toy No 3 were kicked into operation  Literally  Home No 2 was the preferred option being only 1.5 miles away so helmet on and off I went with only 2 dabs along the way , The last 1/4 mile was on virgin snow where no 4x4 had even attempted but my trusty steed did me proud :notworthy 1 wheel drive FTMFW

17-12-2010, 18:33
Well that was an interesting day !

Walked out the back door at 6:00 this morning to a good 5+ inches of snow ! bit of a shock to the system.

Took me an hour and 1/2 to get out of my estate after raiding all the grit boxes on the way !

7 lorry pileup on the main road i use to get to the M4

Fiesta nose on into the central reservation just after Pile

3 Lorries jackknifed after that up until j 32 M4

Made it to Maindy in Cardiff by 9:00 after some tactical driving and avoidance techniques lol

Loads of multi car pileups in and around Cardiff.

Then across Cardiff to St Athan and back home.

Got home and went for lie down lol

More to come too im told :)

Well, back from the Brecons and once again the benefits of winter tyres are obvious.

Plenty of roads where the snow was so deep I was flattening it with my front splitter, but could still accelerate and brake without problems. Compared to the trip last year, on Eagle F1s where most of it was a controlled slide and 3 point turns were done with pushing, it was almost like being on a normal road. Providing you don't drive like a cock, and keep an eye out for potential ice, you can't really go wrong. I'd still recommend engine braking where possible though, just to be a little safer.

When we stopped to get out, had to push snow away with the car door it was that deep. Still drove out just fine.

On the return journey, there was some bloke in a little Pug 306 stuck half way around a corner on a very slight incline, just spinning his wheels. I offered him a push, then drove around him, reversed into a snow bank that was previously a layby and got out to push. Some guys in a 4x4 showed up and stopped to push too. This bloke carries on wheelspinning on the flat. 4x4 driver asks if I need a push out of that snow bank and I'm all "nah, it'll be fine" and drove out leaving behind a gawping 4x4 driver.

I guess it doesn't help that the Cefiro looks American and rear wheel drive.

Overtaking people in the unploughed lane of the Heads of the Valleys road is fun too, what is less fun is having to stop regularly to clear out compacted snow from under the wiper blades.

Stopped for chips on the way back at Bacca's in Aberbargoed. Normally they deliver but not today as the little van is snowed in.

Pictures to come when Nene gets around to processing them.

Going to be interesting fitting the vertical flue through the snowy roof. :wack:

Have yo got one picking you up tomorrow ?

An hour 10 late!
Nah i'm nights tomorrow and drove in today in the Altea, and apart from taking 10 mins to get out of the works car park through untouched iced up snow,it was plain sailing home! Only took up the offer of the taxi as my car was already in work as i'd driven there to start my works piss up :)

Just home from work.

Me and the boss had a stand off :) i asked if i had to go home would he pay me the day, his reply was no.

Ok then so will you put me up if i cant get home tonight or pay the medical bill should i smash the van up ? Im more than happy to stay here. I cant do any work anyway as the troops have all been stood down and sent home due to it being too dangerous to work.

Lets see how it goes was his reply.

20minutes later had a call telling me to go home and not to worry about pay :)

Anyway i cleared the drive and cars over the weekend and that was a good move lol it's covered again now and has been coming down heavy all morning.

nevins
20-12-2010, 17:49
Its a joke people crawling along at 15mph on the dual carriage way, then 20 on the m4. I was in the fast lane sat at 50-60, with no problem at all. Then all hell broke loose with the m4 being closed east bound. Numerous hgv's jack knifing on the a48 and closing that.
So jumped off onto the st mellons road and got stuck in amongst fools trying to drive in the snow which resulted in spins, slides, and me screaming at idiots.
All this because sams boss is a twat and refused to let them leave early, this is the same bloke who had all the workers have to abandon their cars all weekend in the works insecure car park. Time for some cans I think to unwind.

Sounds like a tidy day fella. She aint going in tomorrow as I refuse to take her lol. Also forgot to tell you all how my day started. Got up at 5, at 6 got in the focus to take her to work and steering was a bit heavy, I thought it was just compacted ice and snow built up in the arch and wing, so gave it a tug and nothing. Pulled forward and got a nasty smell of cat piss through the vents.
Reversed back, got out and power steering fluid everywhere. Turns out that ford like to use poxy plastic compression fittings, and with the cold it shattered leaving the car to bleed to death. I am not getting out of bed till 12 tomorrow, and then having a day on forza, as the mrs won't let me have gt5 as she wrapped it for christmas.

Get it out of the wrapper and stick it in the PS3, start update leave for 2 hours and then place back in wrapping paper!

Then when you come to stick it in on Crimbo you wont have to wait for dam ages to play it lol

I told them no way as I've already booked seats for tonight and they agreed to refund the card. I then had a moan about wasting 30 quids worth of petrol despite calling the call centre in advance, and they agreed to give me the guest passes AND refund my card.

Result!

There is a possibility of more on Monday/Tuesday but i cant see it being significant and disruptive.

The biggest problem around here is the ice and laying snow on untreated roads.

It's not bad enough to cause major issues though if driving sensibly.
