View Full Version : Boost
Hello everyone. Has anyone upped their boost by shortening the actuator rod? If so, how much did you shorten it and how? I guess it's a bit vague to know how much boost youre running without a gauge, but has someone with a gauge shortened it by an amount and seen how much more boost it makes?
I upped my boost by putting washers inbetween the turbo and the actuator bracket. 1 washer = 2 psi roughly

This sounds like an excellent/cheap way of getting more boost without having to buy an uprated actuator ? is that the case ? or am I missing something ?

Not sure about the std actuator, but the ND one can be adjusted. Ive found that as little as 1/2 turn can make 2-3psi difference.

DIY T3, FMIC, but need more power!!
The washer method works very well. Takes a bit of fiddling to adjust though.
Very cheap - free really.
Just start with one washer on each bolt and work your way up slowly. I used a thickness of about 2mm to get to 14psi.
Id just stick a bleed valve on, theyre proper cheap nowadays arnt they? Ok so they are not as cheap as some little washers but much less fiddly coz if the washers dont increase it enough, you have to go through it all again. With a bleed valve you can just twist it in/out a bit. Having said that a boost gauge would be handy to set a bleed valve up.
Ignore me, stick some washers on it. Or drill a pound coin out or something. Boost for a quid, cant be bad.

Hi all, I just got my first '91 200SX 1.8 turbo. I find it very interesting to know that I can improve the performance of my car thru this simple adjustment.... : ) ..... but one thing ..all these sound very alien to me ... WHERE DO I ACTUALLY INSERT THE WASHER ( possible to show it with a pic ?? thanks ) http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/confused.gif
I am thinking about changing my intercooler for the increase in BHP. How would this affect my low end torque (if any ) and my overall speed.
Very interesting - I was feeling very pleased with myself late on Thursday evening when I decided to put a little preload on the actuator using this method. I found a couple of Greek coins which had holes in them, drilled them to fit the actuator bolts and put it all back together under torchlight. Set off for Le Mans at 4.30 on Friday morning, filled up with Super (just to be safe), and fitted some colder plugs in the supermarket car park in Calais. Definitely a bit quicker, but not hugely so (although the coins were only about 1 - 1.25mm thick), but quick enough to keep up with my mate's Honda S2000...
However, a caveat...I'd be reluctant to whack the boost up so crudely on any turbo that is even remotely worn. Anyone who saw my car being unloaded from the breakdown truck at Calais last night can also vouch for this... I now know (as do the car passengers on the 21:30 Sea Cat) just how much smoke a totally blown turbo can make...

On a standard 200sx s13 the timing is set to 15 degrees BTDC and if you increase boost the timing should be set to 14 degrees BTDC (or 13 degrees BTDC if wanting to run on normal unleaded)so just inserting washers to the actuator could do SERIOUS damage to the engine!!!!!!!

me being a flash bast**d when it comes to my car put a nice bit of copper pipe in the short lenght of rubber hose that goes to the waste gate actuator and drilled a little hole in it.just drill more holes in the copper pipe until you get the right boost

Or you can insert carburettor jets into the pipe, this has the same effect. Just get an adjustable actuator, its the safest way to go about it, and remember, you have to get your 200 chipped if you want to run over 15psi boost.
Hey PH - another le Mans visitor!!!!! We had to skip it this year (yet another weekend when I had to work damn it and no sod at the office would swap). You a regular over there?
Dodger,
This was the third year we've been (1999, 2000 and 2001). It's a regular fixture now...
