View Full Version : sr powered (probably) 350z drift car...

time for me to start a project thread!

after selling my last drift car, the s14.5, to fund living it up in aiya napa all summer and setup costs of the garage the time has come to start building something new :D
wanted to do something a little bit different that would get noticed and altho i love sx's i just couldnt think of a way of making one stand out from the rest plus ive been there and done that so a 350z seemed like the perfect option.

i couldnt afford a full car so started looking for a damaged one or a rolling shell, except the totally written off ones on ebay there wasnt much about that i could find.eventually got talking to lee (r35lee) off the 350z forum who said he had the perfect car :D

pictures will be better than me describing it but its basically got a little bit of roof damage and o/s/f wing is fooked. the cars 100% straight chassis wise tho. im having it minus the engine , gearbox and interior.he's delivering it to the garage next sunday so then the madness can begin

basic plans are to strip as much weight out of it as possible, full cage, custom wiring looms, all the safety gear and probably an sr20 :wack:

engine choice isnt 100%, all kinda depends on money in a couple of months time when i come to fitting it, its got to be around 400bhp tho

Why not go with an RB engine? I mean, the 350z comes stock with the VQ @ 298+hp, so other than improving F/R weight proportioning, it seems like you'll be slowing down the car... Regardless, good luck with it either way. You should check out the Signal Auto/Motorex 350z (Chris Forsberg's first car). They did the same thing so you might be able to pick out some pointers.

if a 4 pot is good enough for F1 then its good enough for a 350Z......:wack::D

300bhp aint going to be enough power and the zed engine is pricey to tune. thats why probably is in the title because im not 100% on engine yet, id like to 2jz it but at the minute i just cant afford to.
more i think about it the more i consider an rb but originally i was going to sr it as i had a mint engine in the garage ready to drop in it but thats gone to a customer now so the not sure what to do.

im a big fan of lightweightness :wack: so an sr goes with that theme. got a couple of months to listen to everyones opinion tho and make a choice yet :)

as above, i havent priced engine stuff up :wack: realisticly whats it cost to get a jz? with a box and decent clutch setup??not fab work obviously as thats getting done in house. if i can afford it ill do it :D

as you'l no the vq's just dont seem to sell thats why i didnt go down the route of buying the full car and selling bits (and i couldnt afford a full car right now :( )

Yea i wish id had waited around for a crash damaged one, iv had this vq for ages now sitting here and paid good money for the car too!! Iv since found a loads of damaged ones for really good money!! :(

£6k will get you 600-700hp on a 2jz, 400-500hp on a 1jz can be done for £4k or less! A 1jz and an sr are about the same value, but a 1jz will make the power easier and the torque is much more suited to the heavy chassis we both got. But, i dont want you to go jz thinking of it, go bandwagon v8 or sumet :D

im hoping to lose some mega weight from the big heavy thing, time will tell tho when i start ripping it apart.

sorted an awesome cage for it aswel that i'll pickup when i get the chance, was going to take it to nickon motorsport as their work looks amazing but ive dropped on a custom cages 8 point fia spec cage for good money so thats what its having :)

Cool, but a bolt in cage will weigh more than a nickson. I take it you have seen my project?

The sva 350 i was told 1350kg was the min they could get it to with a full shell strp, id be surprised if you could get it below 1250kg with an Sr, i dont think a 400hp sr will be enough to make it worth while. Dont get me wrong, itl work, but i think youl need some thing a little more torquie.

ye ive drooled over your tread, unfortunatly i aint got as much money as you by the looks, the cage im getting is a full weld in, similar spec to yours except wont go to the front turrets and comes with less gussets but i may add a couple of extra bits. u any idea of the weight of your cage or not sure?

i agree its never going to be the quickest car around but it'l be enough to get me through next year... i hope.

cant see me getting the opportunity to drift anything quicker than mallory etc next year, last sx i went there in only had 260bhp ish and was fine so over 400bhp would just be a bonus not a neccesity for me at the minute.

but if i somehow find some extra cash i will be looking for decent power!

Its still to get the engine working & the running of it, but the extra bits needed do soon add onto the cost.

Im not that surprised really, Im pretty sure my brother actually spent nearer 9k on his rebuild and conversion, including turbo and management etc. But that basically got him a new engine.

So i suppose its not a bad price really.

But surely your average joe's arn't going to buy a 6k engine... is it just those that can write it off as tax break, business promotion expense ?? .. need to start my own business :P

Lol, im not just writing the money off! I sold my s14 for 11.5k, most the money has come from that the budget on my new car is 16k and im looking good on that so far. Iv not put any of it throgh or involved the business with it atal. The rest has come from buying and selling a few cars, i got a jag for £250 and moved it on for 1300, a bmw for £250 and a mint s14a takes its place, a few gearboxs i had laying around etc etc. Im not minted, i aint got cash to dispose of, infact my bank has less than £20 in it right now :wack: im just lucky to have bits a bobs sitting around i can sell etc. I would go as far and say im less than your average joe, since starting the business 7-8months ago the most wages iv taken in one month was 1k. lol

What make the car so cheap to build is coz im doing every thing my self, if some one come to me and asked me to build them a car the same as what im building, itd be the £50k mark.

Good :)

If people think that they are open cheque book jobbies then they are stupid.

I couldnt justify 16k on a drift car, my lass would castrate me. BUT i could justify it as a business advertisement, and im sure some clever tax work would help with that. BUT the money has got to some from somewhere initially.

I couldnt fund my drift car without wheeling and dealing :) ..others just do it on a larger scale and hats off to you, If i didnt have the mortage and some bigger stones, i'd give it a go myself

Youve done a Z33 conversion with a VG30DETT then have you? You know all about this engine as well?

It annoys me when people just recommend something because they like the sound of it, like the entire DW forum telling every man and his dog they have to JZ a car before it will even move under its own power. A VG swap is a frankly shit idea when there are better, easier, more often done swaps available.

Believe it or not, some people will actually read whats written here and take it as good advice. Bear it mind eh? :)

A VG30DETT isn't an easy engine to work on access wise (seeing as pretty much any job on a 300ZX in the engine bay is an engine out job), which is kind of useful in a drift car.

Yes I have worked on the engine and yes I know alot about it! It's a very capable engine but does suffer from oil and heat problems, it ain't the most modern of engines and is difficult to access but cheap to get hold of and it's a v6 for a v6 chassis
Frankly doc I don't get why you had a go at me like that besides all it was a funny dont be gay thing
IMO it's a good engine and for the price it's more favourable than an rb26dett and at the same power levels makes a boat load more torque tI've considered it for my s14 but now have a different v idea

The point is Im sick and tired of people with limited or no knowledge talking like they are experts. People come on here for GOOD advice, not some pipedream, not something thats going to take 3 years and another 10K to achieve.
A VG30DETT conversion is one of these things - I know one person on here did one and it took him ages. Sure, hes happy with the car but he isnt using it as a 450hp drifter. If you know the engine you know this, so why are you saying what you are??

Driftworks is even worse for it (Ive seen someone recommend getting an S14 then doing a JZ swap as a good car to learn in, rather than using the SR20 thats already fitted) but we are definitely slipping on here too.

The thing is with my mounts is they sit the engine back and the bulk head will need modding and a custom sump, not sure many people will want to do that, but if there is demand i can make a set that site it in the car with minimal modding.

The diffs are very long, they look R200 but iv not had one appart yet to check the ring gear, if they wer interchangable with the nissans we know im sure id be aweare of it by now.
Mine is an auto diff and 3.4:1 so really long, i think with the jz and r154 box with the power im going for it will be fine. For you, youd really want a 4.1 in there at least maybe even a 4.6, so that will need looking into, but il let you know whats involved soon enough.
The out put flanges on the diff look just like r32/r33 gtr too, so they m,ay even be changable, but wel see.
The shortest ratio iv seen off the shelf for these is a 3.9 from the states :ghey:

One last thing in my defence
I believe the engine to be good and decent if the op doesn't fair enough but the personal attack is a tad harsh doc! How exactly am I talking bollocks? The vg engine is good maybe awkward but certainly a good motor
Limited or no knowledge I'm a fully qualified mechanic I have a reasonably good grasp of things aside from being a bit thick sometimes I am a very good mechanic!
I don't ever use driftworks for the reason you stated and I personally hate the current trend of jz s14 talk that never actually happens I'm currently in talks with a mate/member about his s14a and why I'll do any thing to his car he wants but I don't want to jz it
You keep saying it's a stupid idea but there are worse and aside from it being awkward I can't see any real drawbacks with it?

Also, the engine design is perfect for this chassis, with the high bonnet space.

OK, so apart from being less readily available, more expensive to buy (particularly with known history), more expensive to find modified parts for, more difficult to find a gearbox for, having 6 of everthing if you want to upgrade internals, having known heat issues, known oil starvation issues and is 130lb heavier than an SR, what does a VG have going for it then??

A VG is a good engine, no doubt, but for this application its a whole world of pain and grief that simply isnt necessary, both in the build and potentially in the usage as well. I would therefore say what you have posted is not good advice, sure, its an alternative but not the best choice. :)

EDIT: Its not and wasnt a personal attack either, stop acting like a :ghey:

Or you could do what i was going to do and fit an r35 engine ;) I know where there are some going cheap, with turbos, manifolds loom, injectors the lot, theyl do 600hp on stock turbos :) z33 box goes on with out too much work, same as clutch. Also, the engine design is perfect for this chassis, with the high bonnet space.

hmmm how nice would that be :smitten: what sort of money is that lot tho?i imagine its far from cheap unless its fell off the back of a lorry ;)

Just found this thread you might find helpfull on diffs
http://forums.nicoclub.com/350z-final-drive-t345542.html

had a skim read and thought nice one, frontera it is then, but seems like none are a direct fit, so its either keep searching or startin making a custom setup which isnt really what i want to do. like you say tho, going to need a shorter ratio for sure

I got offerd it at mates rates, i worked it out to get it in and running with every thing would be 12k, hence why i didnt go for it, but its an option :)

I think what i was offered it for thogh was 4k cheaper than what hed sell to any one else. But he has at least 10 of them all less than 1000 miles use.

Regarding the diff, i think it will be alot easier job to fit a sbody or rbody diff and shafts than try to fit a ratio into the case.

The 350z is a heavy car, about 1560kg with the VQ engine fitted surely the little extra weight from a slightly larger displacement engine such as the RB would be worth it for the extra low down torque, Im not sure of the mass of these engines but it cant be any more than 50kg heavier surely, which is gonna make barely any difference in a heavy car like the 350.:)

Driftworks is even worse for it (Ive seen someone recommend getting an S14 then doing a JZ swap as a good car to learn in, rather than using the SR20 thats already fitted) but we are definitely slipping on here too.

:( why has 1jz gone from being a cool conversion to being really disliked all in the time ive been building mine.

I had my own reasons for it though, and agree with the general topic of people talking arse. The big one is the whinging about a bigger engine in the front and how if you want to be able to go round corners you HAVE to mount it 6 feet through the bulkhead otherwise you may as well not bother. its all bollocks, when i actually used cornerweight measurements and a few educated estimates to prove it was fine, everyone shut up about it lol.

Anyway, best of luck with the conversion, whatever you choose, all the best with it.

it'd be a good engine to use but i defnatly cant afford it for next year :(

ye thats what i thought diff wise, cheaper in the long run and easily available if/when things break

the plan is tho to change it from being a big heavy car to being an average weight car, but dont hold me to that as ive never stripped a zed so dont no how much weight i can save at the minute.

i'm quite looking forward to getting it on the scales actually

at the end of it its you who will drive it so unless its technical and factually based, ignore peoples opinions lol.

i went for the jz as it was reasonably priced, a rare conversion, and most importantly reliable power.

15-12-2010, 00:12
If you just want a cheap and pretty reliable engine to throw in, then just go for the SR20, build it to 400BHP and it should be fine for the short 350Z chassis, if money wasn't a factor i would go for an LS1-2-3 you can buy a ready made conversing kit from the states for about £1200 that consists of engine mounts, sump pan and prop shaft, if only i had the spare cash:smitten:

Its a good conversion, for sure, certainly seems to be stronger than an RB

I just dont understand why people feel they have to get an RB/JZ/LS thrown in, in some cases before theyve even driven or bought a car. Id love a 6 cylinder 200SX, and fair play to you for doing it, but personally I couldnt justify the time and expense particularly when youve already got a perfectly good SR sat up front

and nobody has even mentioned the bumrape 'cooltax' inflation on anything to do with JZ's or R154's! The main reason they seemed so attractive 3yrs ago was that they were DIRT cheap, I got an engine with absolutely everything you could think of with it for £400 delivered! added a box for £150 and was away.

I wouldn't even consider one now for the money they go for:wack:

ok i wasnt going to put these pics up as it makes the damage look loads worse :( but here goes...
1st shot should be how i'll get it from the rear except ive took a set a wheels up to put on as wasnt bothered about them ones

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj50/MATT200SX/350z2.jpg

again, as i'll get it, front bumper has been removed but no damage at all behind it

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj50/MATT200SX/350z.jpg

under bonnet shot, engine and box will be removed and a few trims etc but i'll be ripping the rest out anyway

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj50/MATT200SX/350z6.jpg

interior shot, only main thing i want is the dash, he's removing the airbags which damages it but i dont mind as i'llbe getting it flocked anyway. the screen has smashed hence the glass but he's supplying me with a new screen :)

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj50/MATT200SX/350z5.jpg

now the bad shot :annoyed::annoyed: we cant work out how the damage has happened but it looks like somethings been dropped on it :wack: wings knackered obviously, couple of scratches on the bonnet, he's supplying a new lights, door mirrors broke and a couple of minor dents on the door.
theres no damage inner wing wise etc, the only major damage is the roof haha which looked shocking at 1st but most of it has punched out after giving it a bash a few times :D

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj50/MATT200SX/350z4.jpg

i'll get a load more pics up when i actually have the car in my garage but for now, you wanted pics, thats what you've got

so eventually at midnight the 350 turned up at the garage, couldnt be arsed to play with it last night so went straight home.

just had an hour on it and im fairly happy, no rust compared to 200's, whipped the o/s/f wing off and theres no damage what so ever underneath it. also took the roof lining out and bashed the roof with my hand abit more.

if i hadnt of lost my phone on friday id stick some more pictures up :(

plan is to do some paying work then crack on stripping it this week, there looks to be soooo much un needed weight bolted on everywhere, ecu's, looms, shit braces, etc etc it'l be goodbye to that lot!

Ah but thats the thing, my SR had blown up, i figured i could pop another one in but theres a chance it could go again, and as a fresh graduate i didnt have the money to run the thing really so just took it off the road. Then i looked at the numbers and for the value added to the car and subtracting the value of parts sold the 1JZ looked like a decent route to take plus mega reliability.

Ive also done alot of the stuff myself, well, everything so far except a couple of fabricated parts. And yeah as people have said 1jz is a bit expensive but if you shop around there are bargains to be had as with anything. Check my build thread anyway, its gone all quiet even with the addition of videos!!

not done as much as i wanted to by now due to lack of time and too much alcohol...

timescale for the drift zed has changed, original plan was to get it done for end of march at the latest, giving me a month ish of testing then do the full season of bdc. as im stacked out at the garage ive just had to put it on the back burner, the next target i set was may when a group of us are going to the nurburgring, now ive got the daily zed i mite just take that now  sooooo, the final deadline is awesomefest end of july :D

the other problem is im going to egypt in march and ibiza in july so theres always the other issue on money :wack: unfortunatly it aint unlimited :(

Source a VQ30DET from Japland from a Y34 Cima ;) They come with an auto box in the Y34, no manual option for the engine. 350z box can be mated up with a bit of work. I can't remember the exact problem there is which means they don't go straight up. Or get a 300ZX/RB box, they are a similar level of effort to make them work.

500whp on standard internals, same mounts as the VQ35DE, bit of exhaust and gearbox shenanigans and a GT35 and you're away. Plus it's pretty much the same dimensions as a VQ35DE so you retain the weight dist too. Sounds good, ridiculous amounts of torque and unique too. Over here anyway.

Desperately would like one to slot into a 13, just don't have the money to undertake such a job. Would be utterly awesome.

Why not go with an RB engine? . One of the most over used statments on the internet:wack:

You'll get people in either camp 400BHP SR is reliable and RBs are **** and those that say RB's are amazing and SR's are shit lol.

Go with what you can, like the idea of an SR tho :)

I like you

If sr's were better than rb's then that's what skylines would have but they are cheaper
Why not vg30dett that would be cool

:annoyed:

Youve done a Z33 conversion with a VG30DETT then have you? You know all about this engine as well?

It annoys me when people just recommend something because they like the sound of it, like the entire DW forum telling every man and his dog they have to JZ a car before it will even move under its own power. A VG swap is a frankly shit idea when there are better, easier, more often done swaps available.

Believe it or not, some people will actually read whats written here and take it as good advice. Bear it mind eh? :)

The truth

300 brake aint gonna cut it, im only thinking of other engines to use as i dont think 400 is gonna cut it :wack:

yes sr can easily be reliable at 400 but im gonna kill boxes unless i change to rb box, then its bumping the price up and i may aswel use a better engine to start with

you were qouting polo saying 'cheap', there isnt a budget on this car really, if i can spend 2k on the engine set up and be happy with it then awesome, if its 5k and even more awesome then no probs, even if its somthing ridiculas thats going to cost 10k then id even consider it, it justs means the cars not going to be ready for even longer so i need to find the happy medium between cost/power/reliabilty.

With Polo on this one, JZ is the only way to go..

If you need a 1jz.. I have a few :D :wack:

go on then, quick rough price guestimate for lets say a 500bhp jz???

Haha, you bought the 350 off a guy I know, Greg, hopefully it gives you less drama

confused me for a bit there, your onabout the daily zed arent you, the blue one? not the caged up one, ye he could of been called greg. been no real drama for me, i fooking love it :D

Would make more sense to me than a 2.8 BMW lump ...........

i could be totally wrong as i havent fully priced it up but it at a glance it seems like a really good way to 5-600bhp. idea cmae from 'm3 turbo' off dw, his mates been running big power through one for 5 years now. also its a bit different which i like

Its a great looking car - if you ever sell the works i could be interested!

If you got it from Scotland then yeah it's probably Greg!

been mega busy in the garage with customer work so not touched mine, now the drifting season is nearly here its got me motivated again, well jelous really that everyone else is out having fun and ive got half a useless car.

so... im robbing a few bits of the daily 350z and selling it so i can plough some money into the drift car, no one needs 2 350's, its just plain greedy.

had the wrong engine delivered for a yaris today so it left a hole in the diary, in comes the 350z :D

the cage is virtually done now and the weld are primed as they were getting surface rust on them, just need to clean up a couple of the welds.

still got absolutly loads to do but im going o try and dedicate more time to it so i can get it done.

anyway heres a quick pic...

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj50/MATT200SX/cageprimed.jpg

also the engine choice has returned to a jz, yes i no i change my mind alot but it seems the obvious answer, just need to source one

i may possibly be sticking some primer on the inside of this in the morning. i'll be abit happier if i do.

also pretty sure the car will be white inside and out although still not 100% on that.

things i need to research more...
find someone who maes a fiberglass boot or get someone to make one
plastic windows
possibly some sort of rocket bunny arches to make it wide as hell
think im set on running either standard bumpers or the nismo kit as everything else is horrid that ive seen so far.

infact this list could go on alooooong time

Just buy a full car strip the bits you need and brake the rest :D

how much are the full cars tho??

About £4k - £7k. but you easy make that back in bits.
I had the idea of doing it to my s14 picked up a stolen recovered CL55 2001 but ended up selling it on. If you can do all the work your sorted otherwise it would have cost me loads.

so, abit of an update...

primed the inside of the car
http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/205460_10150154801096814_551426813_7264847_6999168 _n.jpg

did a quick test fit of the dash, this needs trimming up to make perfect yet
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/208657_10150156376066814_551426813_7279872_3726722 _n.jpg

lost interest/motivation of working on the car as i had to uncover it and roll it inside everytime i wanted to work on it...time for drastic measures
me and a mate attacked the wall :wack:
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/208454_10150156438026814_551426813_7280165_5290103 _n.jpg
finishing touches :D

now i can leave it inside and do more work on it
http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/217418_10150156525736814_551426813_7280743_2922467 _n.jpg

Matt
12-05-2011, 16:32
at that point i was waiting to sell my other 350z to fund buying an engine and box, was just about to order the engine and spotted this on driftworks
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/228239_10150172900591814_551426813_7437980_7050470 _n.jpg
yep, a horrible looking chaved up soarer...but under the bonnet looked like this...
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/223301_10150172900691814_551426813_7437982_3803617 _n.jpg

plan was to use it for a couple of weeks then strip it and start putting it in the zed. the day after getting it we stripped it :wack: was scrapped the day after. luckily i got it fairly cheap and after selling coilovers etc it doesnt stand me at alot of money.
it's supposedly running 380bhp at 1.2bar and 465 at 1.5bar. no proof of that tho so i'll take it with a pinch of salt.

when its in and running i'll be getting it remapped and anyway.

soooo, a test fit...
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/230810_10150173447656814_551426813_7444121_8318415 _n.jpg

thats without a sump on at all as the soarer comes with a rear sump so i had to order a front sump to fit round the subframe.

got it into the postion where it would fit
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/222958_10150173835106814_551426813_7448520_6274182 _n.jpg

in that position its against the bulkhead pretty much and wasnt that far forward, the plan was to wait til the sump arrived, if it would fit like that then i'll leave it, if the sump needs modding then i'll put it further back like polo has.
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/222958_10150173835106814_551426813_7448520_6274182 _n.jpg

sump arrived, and it needed modding :annoyed: but im glad really as i dont think id of been happy with it that far forward. so the new sump got cut up, as did the bulkhead...

http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/226454_10150178730211814_551426813_7497517_1589830 _n.jpg

so with the bulkhead and sump cut it meant the engine would sit nice and far back
http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/231013_10150178627941814_551426813_7496469_1996272 _n.jpg
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/229726_10150178690116814_551426813_7497179_1178303 _n.jpg

so then i pulled the engine back out and set on welding up the bulkhead
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/225705_10150178824756814_551426813_7498373_4983603 _n.jpg

this is where im upto at the minute. except ive tidied up the bulkhead welding abit.

next steps are to make seat mounts and get the inside painted. and finished sorting the engine bay so that can be painted.

polo has kindly agreed to make me a set of engine mounts like his so should have them by the end of the month all being well. also he's sorting me the shifter extension so the gearstick lines up :notworthy

yes i could of made the mounts but his is tried and tested now and works so i figured id happily pay him to make them, also saves me alot of time and effort :wack:

Matt
12-05-2011, 16:37
also a shiny new alloy rad and big front mount cooler have arrived, a 3inch cooler pipe kit is on the way as is an exhaust.

also suprisingly the soarer downpipe fits straight in and possibly mite even fit upto the rear section of exhaust with minimal modding :)

MagicMat
12-05-2011, 16:40

Matt
26-05-2011, 00:08
so its update time again, stopped at the garage and done a few hours after work for the last 3 nights.
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/248166_10150194405196814_551426813_7608912_8067610 _n.jpg
a couple of mates came round and helped me out with the final prep, scotched it all up and i let them work there magic (i aint a paintin fan so just let them crack on)
http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/248536_10150194405301814_551426813_7608915_169129_ n.jpg

so as you can see its pretty white :D not sure how long it'l stay nice like that. half of me still thinks i should of gone for grey but its done now

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/230799_10150194415226814_551426813_7609110_4827127 _n.jpg

dropped all the front subframe etc off aswel when it was painted and gave it a blast in the arches, wasnt going to but thought **** it

jiggled it back to its home in the corner of the garage the next day and started bolting a few bits on, pedals, servo etc
http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/248066_10150194855871814_551426813_7612891_3712592 _n.jpg

putting things like the door rubbers on is very satisfying, all looks so clean and starts to look finished after all the bloody months of it looking a mess :wack:
http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/226642_10150194856136814_551426813_7612893_1703417 _n.jpg

also bolted the drivers seat in, was worried about headroom but ive got a good inch clearance with my helmet on and the seat can drop another inch if needs be

standard handbrake is in, gave the base a lick of paint as i wont be running a center console, test fitted the gear gaitor aswel.

started test fitting the alloy rad and fmic
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/248144_10150195510876814_551426813_7618680_5806234 _n.jpg

had to trim the crash bar abit to get it where i want it, may have to trim some more depending what other coolers i run and where i need them. also mite use the hole saw on the crash bar to get abit more flow to the cooler.

a mate made me these sections to go in the corner of the dash where the a piller trim used to be, marc on here is flocking my dash so he'll be filling the gaps and making it look factory all being well :)
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/249171_10150195520651814_551426813_7618773_5970135 _n.jpg

aslo finished the center section of the dash, all the four section will have panels in them for switches and monitering bits etc, maybe even a stereo :wack:

http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/249264_10150195651231814_551426813_7619673_412567_ n.jpg

thats it for tonight, im knackered and need sleep so covered it up with my new 800bhp car cover, really good quality
http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/247443_10150195651331814_551426813_7619674_499675_ n.jpg

hopefully going to carry on doing alot of these late nights now i can see the finish line, still got a shit load of parts to get which = money to spend and also a fair whack of parts to fab up.

polo will hopefully have the mounts to me and the shifter extension early next week so then i can start making the sump.

main reason i cracked back on with it was i managed to blag myself into the driftworks demo they were doing at mallory park for ppc magazine, havent even got a car but a mate offered his, would of been rude to say no :notworthy
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/226368_10150192645611814_551426813_7587172_2166416 _n.jpg

i did ok for a car ive never driven before, but mainly it reminded me how much fun drifting is :D not even bothered about competing(although i will be asap :wack:) its just awesome to have a good day out, no pressure and meet new people.

also played with the engine a little, it had a bad oil leak in the soarer, turns out which ever retard had the rocker covers off last managed to snap 6 of the bolts which were all on the inner edge. so oil was pissing out, managed to sort all those out and just picked up a new pair of gaskets yesterday.

the exhaust manifold was badly cracked and external wastegate was hitting the steering column so play with that and tacked it up then removed he manifold and a mates tig'in that up and strengthening it abit aswel :)

adams round again tomorrow night, well tonight to prime a fair few bits like the roof, a few holes that needed welding up like the areal etc and a few general dents around the car. thought it may aswel be right to start with even if i do smash it up at the 1st drift day :wack:

Some good progress being made now.

As you can pick up 350s so cheap now do you think you would have been better off buying a non damaged running one and selling the engine box? Or was it that much cheaper to buy this one?

wanted a jz from the start but didnt think it was an option money wise and had a decent power sr sat in the garage. business is good plus me working alot of hour = me getting a jz :D

the thought has gone through my head but realistically all there is to sell is the interior and engine/box combo. engine's just dont really sell at the minute and the cheap zeds have the shit interior, plus they dont actually sell that well anyway. so no i think i did the right thing.

i got mine at a pretty good price so ye ithink im happy with the way ive done it

cheap? Think the cheapeast i've seen one go for is 5-6k ?

they do go for sub 5k sometimes now on ebay etc but theyve done high milleage, sometimes auto and usually have sick coloured interior

the parts that are worth good money to sell on are all the bits i need unfortunatly like front end bits etc :annoyed:

That as the plan with mine, buy a good one and flog the parts, I origanly added up I'd get about £3-3.5k back, but relisticly it was more like 2-2.5 k, so the car was a tad more expensive than a damaged one.
But bear in mind youl have to fix damage and replace parts, so in the long run about the same.

ye if you bought some of the damaged ones off flebay then itd cost a bloody fortune to get right. plus not that it really matters on stuff like this as i'll probably role it or crash n burn anyway but mines always gona be a cat c so in theory worth less

also took it for a little blast round the industrial estate earlier, that brought a massive smile to my face, found a few problem, small water leak from the stat housing, tiny oil weap from the sump :( hopefully i dont need to remove the engine to sort that.

also the car waaaaaay too low, well at least on the front, going to raise it and shove spacers on so it still looks good. not a mark on the exhaust but the chassis scrapes ALOT, also a little mark on the sump(which may be why its leaking). so i mite male some sort of sump gaurd aswel.

still got a massive list of shit to do on it but im hoping to be drifting it next weekend :D

one last picture for now....

knocked up abit of a list yesterday with things to do before its driftable and there was 80 things on it some are 5 minute jobs, mast are a few hours but i shall be doing another long week and trying to do it all.

wheels got painted today, along with adams (his cars getting a makeover in the next 2 weeks), also mark white came up in his s14 so we joked about painting his wheels...we ended up painting them!!!

done alot more on it over the last week or so, had a massive list that a got thru but as i did a couple of things id find another so it still aint finished but its a hell of a lot closer.

had to take the sump off as there was a leak, did that and all seemed good but it seems theres another tiny tiny weep that needs sorting :( stuck antifreeze in it and bled it up, all good. made custome power steering lines.
ive made a heatshield up for the brake and clutch reseviors and also abit of sleeving for the throttle cable. bled the brakes aswel.

a couple more pictures now its on the red rims...

ive made some s13 mirrors fit as i didnt have any 350 ones plus theyre mega expensive and dont look that good. think i'll get some carbon ones similar to the dw s15 etc.

supposed to be drifting it at buxton at the weekend but a mates birthday mite be taking over that, or depending on times etc i may just go to buxton for a few hours on saturday. i'll see, i'd like to give it a blast somewhere local really but its hard as it aint road legal yet.

well its been used!! went to buxton drifting it yesterday, its made me love it even more :D its very laggy but will just take abit of getting used to for now until i change turbo etc. had a couple of issue's :( 1st was that a boost pipe decided to come off and i ran over it :wack: after alot of hammering my mate kinda straighten it out and i bodged it back on, suprisingly it held up.

other issue was... a fire :annoyed: the high pressure line for the power steering popped shooting all the fluid on the turbo which sent flames everywhere, 1st i new of it was when the pas went heavy then saw smoke coming out the bonnet, by the time i got out the car a marshal was already on it with an extinguisher :notworthy, its melted the airfilter abit and made a mess of the clean engine bay, apart from that no damage.

i new there'd be teething problems so not fussed at all, just need to get it fully road legal to test some more instead of wasting drift days!

someone found a short video, not sure how to link them up tho? if this works turn the volume up :D

overdue update of how the car is getting on...

after the incident at buxton i removed the power steering line and took it back to where i got it, they said its a faulty line and gave me another :wack: i wasnt convinced but had to give it a go.

next outing was santa pod last wednesday, havent been there in years, ended up going with the other slide boys to try and get some twinning practice in, car was awesome to start with then later in the day POP! PAS hose popped agian, luckily this time it was at the pump end so fluid didnt go on the turbo :smash:

so after eventually getting back from pod and blasting thru all the customer work i managed to squeeze some zed time in, another equivelant braided line wasnt an option so i went to pirtek/mend-a-hose and got them to make one, rated to 18000psi aparently. i wanted to do a million other jobs on the car but time just didnt let me.

birmingham wheels was the next drift day, i wasnt overly fussed about it but i need to sort all the teething issues so decided to go last minute, didnt get there until about 2.30 after an incident with the truck, also was abit hungover :o#

fair few folk there, and it turned out to be a fun day, think i only had 4 sessions but that was enough, it was all going perfect until the clutch gave up on the last lap :wack: few pictures and a video...

final update for now...

booked the vic check a few weeks ago and it was for today. been soooo busy this week i didnt get chance to look at the car till 11.30pm latnight, luckily after a bit of ****ing around i realised the pin that holds the pedal to the master cylinder had dissapeared, whipped one off an sx pedal i had in stock and hey presto sorted :D

just had to swap a couple of wheels and temporarily fix the front bumper, vic checks are like mot's, you can legally drive to them without tax :D the place was 20 miles away so i had great fun this morning driving there, obviously i kept to all speed limits and didnt spin the wheels at all :smash::smash:

usually the vic check take 10mins ish, after an hour and alot of phonecalls and umming and arring he came back with the pass sheet :) reason for it taking forever was due to some of the chassis numbers missing and obviously difffernt engine and different colour.

happy as larry i steadily drove back to the garage, just got to wait for the logbook so i can tax it.

next outing is norfolk arena on the 15th of this month, quite a few of us going the night before for a few beers then a day of fun :D

been abit quiet with up dates due to varies things but hopefully all the little niggles will be sorted for the 2012 season.also a few changes...

went to bdc's norfolk licensing day and managed to get a license along with the other slide motorsport boys, did it in adams skyline (legend for letting me), thats such a good car, plenty of lock and so much useable power(his skylines also in the garage geting a 'spruce' up ready for next season).

got another set of grids so i dont have to use other shit wheels(still could do with another set)
more lock
more useable power low down
finish most of the little jobs that need doing that have been neglected!

been to a few more days in it but its had problems at most of them, heres a few pics of the latest days out...

^^ that was up at teeside, definalty the best day ive had in it so far, only issue i had was a missfire towards the end of the day which turned out to be some dodgy coilpacks

^^ a day up at santa pod, thats me chasing adam in the skyline, only really went as we were delivering the kgb deals cefiro back to pod after a makeover, was fun for about an hour until the car gave up. not even sure what the issue is for sure at the minute, id lost motivation with it but gonna have to search it out and get grafting on it again.

again at pod, this was with the new bc coilovers on thanks to apex performance, drove a million times better, was still slightly too soft so ive got a firmer set of springs to put on which should sort it :)

and i'll leave it with this picture as it reminds me that however much i hate the god damn car it looks fooking awesome, well i think it does anyway :D roll on 2012!!
