What do you think about Linux?

I'm in one of those moods, so it's time for a poll. What do you think about Linux (in general, not any specific distro). I am a big fan, so you now know which way I've voted :D

Id love to love Linux... but never really got my brain around it... too much effort for the occasional PC use that I have... perfect for appliances... very lightweight and stable...

id try to use it, if i could run all my pc software on it!!! (I HATE MICROSOFT!! and wish i could shun most of its products... )

MS products may be unstable, but run amazingly well out of the box...

Linux on the otherhand is stable, BUT A COMPLETE PAIN IN THE ARSE to do anything with and install anything

But hey my FTP servers running nice and securly now on me linux box :)

I wouldn't necessarily agree with that statement. I install and maintain Windows servers as part of my job so I have to know what I'm doing there, but what I will say about Windows servers is that they're fine if you leave them alone. If you try to do something with them, they tend to fall over. I also install and maintain Linux servers. Mandrake is a piece of piss to install and install stuff on. Red Hat is pretty easy too. Mandrake is probably one of the easiest distros to get to grips with, but in Len's opinion (and I quote): "it's French and therefore gay". I may or may not agree with that :D I personally quite like Slackware :thumbs: Red Hat(e) seems to be the one that gets installed most often as it's the most supported distro by the major manufacturers :rolleyes:

I love the fact that it's not Microsoft.

I hate the fact it's a total pain in the bum when trying to do a host of simple tasks.

I'd like to love it but I HATE it! AAAArgh. I got Mandrake 8.1, and I STILL cant find a way to change the default bloody font that Konqueror/whatever the bloody browser is called uses to view text files. I need them to learn how to use stuff!

Linux is great at doing anything other than productivity stuff (office etc), can't beat the monopoly M$ has with office and IE IMO.

Very versatile and very free.

Linux does have some good productivity software. There are office suites that are compatible with M$ Office.

I know, but they are not as good, or 100% compatible.

Windows is ace for messing around, but for anything more complicated than writing an email or browsing porn then Linux/solaris is the way to go IMO. :)

Although your not far wrong the linux/unix world does strike many as a bit terrifying but to be honest people you want to get into it now.

Sun one of the biggest most staunch supporters of UNIX is binning its Solaris operating system at Version 2.10 and porting to linux, Microsoft are looking to get on the linux bandwagon sooner rather than later, they bought out a company whose name i forget and i may be wrong but i`m sure the X-box uses a linux-esque operating system.

Linux is the way forward but needs major backing and with major backing comes cost. I play with all of them but windows is the most catered for simply because it is the home operating system of choice, lets be honest with windows 95/98 microsoft more or less gave the complete moron access to a computer.

yeah I'm pretty sure the xbox is linux too, as is mac-os now, and even Netware is heading that way a bit.

So basically, big companies are fleecing free GNU software, modding it and selling it for huge profit. :)

what was quite funny was the 'About ' screen for the old IE (4 or 5) was written on Macromedia. if you look at hte source for it, it's says macromedia in one of the tags LOL.

The X-Box uses a cut down Windows 2000 kernel - nowt to do with Linux, and I think Mac OSX is more based on some other version of Unix, rather than Linux.

Its also the shittest OS they have ever produced Apple :mad:

I have to support it on a daily basis and classic OS although hardly stable was a damn site easier to administer.
