Whats the best way to take the turbo off the engine? On the manifold or piece by peice?!
Trying to find the cause of the tractor type noise you see!

I'd love to know too.

I thought I'd got mine off yesterday but a previous S13 owner of the moronic variety has welded one of the nuts to one of the studs that secures the Turbo to the short downpipe thing that has lambda sensor in it.

How p1ssed off am I? http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/redface.gif

Is it possible to undo the 4 nuts that hold the turbo to the manifold with the engine in?
If so how?

Failing that is it possible to get the manifold off the head with everything on the car?

I've always found it easier to take it off attached to the manifold although it probably costs you more in gaskets.

mabatsu,

so it is possible to get the manifold off with no special tools?

Are all of the nuts accessible?

You will find it extremely difficult to remove the turbo on its own without the manifold cause you can;t get to all of the bolts. The manifold undoes quite easily and there are two fidlly nuts behind the right side which you can get to with a thin and long spanner, plus a load of undoing small turns at a time. Remember to remove the water and oil pipes as well as they are easily bent if you forget and the return oil to sump pipe.

Hope that helps.

(p.s. those water pipes are a bitch to get back on, good luck).

Yep, you don't need special tools although having a 1 inch wide, 2 ft long articulated arm would be useful to get at those two bas^&$d nuts underneath. Normally takes me 1/2 an hour to undo each nut http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif
I have a T3 which probably makes life a bit more difficult as the flange is a little wider.

Good luck

Like they said, take the manifold off with the tubby still attached. A set of ratchet spanners will help..

mambastu: half an hour per nut? hmm.. ahh and you have a T3..

Are T28's fitted in a way that makes them more difficult to get out? I think Matt's going to be ripping his snail out soon and he could save some labour if he has enough courage to do it himself http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

I've had the turbo off two of my S13s.

It takes a while but you don't need any special tools or anything. Be prepared to loose most of the skin off your knuckles though...

ooh i might aswell add my little bit of wisdom. Mike, you might find the tractor type noise is simply the dump pipe which has rattled away from the business end of the turbo. The 5 nuts that go around it vibrate loose, very common it seems. Dead easy to tighten em, if you have fingers like chopsticks. You may need to grind down a 13mm ringspanner to get at the bottom one behind the bit that sticks out on the pipe. Not really necessary to take the turbo off to do it. I have done it on mine a few times, you might find one or more of the nuts are totally missing, thus resulting in the dump pipe (elbow - whatever you wanna call it) flapping about and sounding like you have ripped the exhaust clean off.

BEWARE though, those studs WILL shear if you swing off them, and then you will have to strip it all down.

To qoute chimp...
"You may need to grind down a 13mm ringspanner to get at the bottom one behind the bit that sticks out on the pipe."

Well mine was a 12mm spanner, but didn't make any difference as some idiot has welded this nut to the stud, the most awkward nut on the whole damn car and he had to weld that one. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/redface.gif
