I've got an HPDeskJet 960c and its about a year old.

All was well up unitl today, when it is infrequently printing at about 17% off straight.
it is using good quality paper stock on a level surface.

Any ideas? I can't afford a new one :(

This sometimes caused by a batch of paper which is sticking at the edge. Try fanning it out and then re-inserting it in the paper tray :)

Can also be caused by the paper feed rollers getting dusty (from the paper) and starting to slip as they feed. You can get some tacky paper to feed through to clean them off.

I also assume that the paper guides are adjusted snuggly to fit, not had a problem with this with my 970cxi.

I'd get some meths and some paper towel to clean the rollers

Is the paper feeding right just not printing straight?

If thats the case give it a good clean. There will be an "optical strip" (don't really know what it is called) behind the print head. It uses this to determine where the print head is in relation to the paper. It is a strip of plastic with "windows" in it that light shine through, if it gets dirty and not enough light will pass then it confusses it and will print off straight.

Always happening at work on my HP due to dusty environment, just gave it a wipe with some thinners every couple of weeks and all was well!:)
