I always wear mine, not wanting any unwanted pig attention has a lot to do with it, esp on short trips to the chippy etc.

i used not to wear it, then got pulled by the pigs, now do wear it coz i cna't afford the fine.

but, if i'm in a crash, teh steering wheel is so close to my legs i won't go out the 'screen. And the belt won't save me either . Ratherpointless really

Always wear it. Make everyone in the car wear it. Statistically you are much more likely to survive a crash if you are wearing a seatbelt. Their benefits far far outweigh the problems they can cause. In my experience (albeit somewhat limited) occupants that have a major seatbelt injury (eg pelvic fracture, intra-abdominal injury requiring surgery) are better off than occupants of the same car who are not wearing seatbelts (eg head injury, dead, spinal fracture with paralysis).

I am sincerely surprised that some of you don't wear them all the time.

I am surprised that this issue has even been raised in this forum. (no offence Graham B:))

Call me what you will...

oh and starionman: You probably will go through the windscreen. You'd be surprised what the body will fit through if enough decelleration is applied. Trouble is you get a bit mangled up as you are forced through those tight spaces. And then you land on the road and the 18 wheeler you've just overtaken is unable to brake in time and runs you over. Don't think it doesn't happen, and don't think it won't happen to you.

1. Pieman: It is appreciated that seat belts are not perfect. They have to be designed to be so comfortable that you don't realise you are wearing one, restraining equally over your entire body in a fraction of a second so as to avoid seatbelt injury, and simple to undo in an emergency. Inherently this is a nightmare to design, and as such the prefect seatbelt / restraint has yet to be designed. I believe race harnesses are less likely to "lock up" on you - but they are a hassel and are not comfortable.

2. Starionman: I promise you will fit out of your windscreen from behind your steering wheel if there is enough energy and you are not wearing a seatbelt. Lots of people have died this way. I also promise that your head will fit between your horn on your steering wheel and the top part of the actual steering wheel. Your brain may be injured performing this stunt. Not that you will be aware of this.

3. Dave: Yes we have discussed things like this before and I am a doctor. But I am a junior doctor. I am doing surgical training at a major melbourne hospital. In this position I see plenty of multitrauma both in emergency departments and in operating theatres. I have seen the results of occupants wearing and not wearing seatbelts. I read the journals on this stuff. I know what I'm talking about, but I'm not a professor of trauma surgery or anything (although I do work with professors of trauma).

I think I have made my point of view quite clear, and I can appreciate that not everyone will agree - for whatever reason. But please do give it some serious thought - the statistics we all talk and know about were not made up. They were largely put together from real crashes in which real people died.

chris i aint arguing over the why's and wherefores i am simply saying i choose not to as it is my choice, it should also be any individuals choice to or not to
if i am happy to pay the fine then i can and will opt out of the seatbelt scheme
if i choose to park ilegally , which i do, then that is also my choice
the society we live gives us choices , we choose and use which we like or can suffer

i also speed but i pay my insurance if i didnt i wouldnt need it

i also smoke which is nasty and evil but if i didnt the nhs would be in dire staights , so where do you draw the line at choices with out my fags and tax's i pay, the law and the hospitals would be in a worse state, not to mention that if i had an accident with or without a belt on i would still wait 5 f*****ing days to see a doctor as the waiting time is sh**e

sorry im just waffling as im pished but this big brother attitude really pishes me off

I never wear them, but it is just a bad habit. I usually end up putting it on part way though a journey, I'm in and out of cars all bloody day.

I've been in 2 serious accidents, both times without a seatbelt. On the second accident, I had a passenger, who had his seatbelt on. I walked away uninjured :(

The first one though, after this I swore I would always wear my seatbelt from then on, cos I headbutted the steering wheel, and now my nose is completely fcuked :(

Always wear mine, 2 lads from the village where I live have been killed over the last couple of years, both of them thrown out of the car because they weren't belted up, probably would still be alive today if they had.

Compelling enough reason for me.

I always wear them - no exceptions. Some people catastrophise about what could happen if you wear them - but let's face it, the chance of injury while NOT wearing them is far greater. In an accident you can be thrown all over the place inside the car (and through a window) Remember, accidents are not always head on so the windscreen, steering wheel etc is not the only thing to avoid. What about side impacts, rear end shunts, rolls etc?

Think about it people - it's not rocket science - just simple kinetics :D

I always wear mine......mainly cos i feel basically naked if im not, something just doesnt feel right.

Think its something to do with my age, i have always worn one since i can remember - so it just like turning the key - do it without thinking.

Also helps that i have been involved with two crashes, both times the seatbelt caught me in time, and witnessed a mate of mine go through a telegraph pole with his 306 - seatbelt possibly saved any injury.

Snap.

At the end of the day, it needn't be your mistake. Someone else could fcuk up and before you know it, you're, err... dead. As a doodoo. At least a seatbelt gives you half a chance.

I think this one works pretty good :D
basically - squeeses you into the seat, pulls your arms and legs in tight, makes an exit hole and gets 800ft away from the impending mess in under 1.7 seconds. Then releases you from the seat after slowing it down and stabilising it and hangs you on a parachute in around 2 seconds after pulling the handle. On the Eurofighter you might not even have to pull the handle. But the pilot's don't like that idea very much :)

oh and i usually remember to wear my seatbelt :)

A friend of mine was in an accident on Wednesday evening, I have no idea of the details, but all I know is that she's being transferred to a spinal unit in Oxford today, she's broken her collar bone and bone(s) in her back (but can still move her toes.) She apparently has a huge red mark across her chest where the seat belt did its job. :|

'Nuff said.

I agree, it feels weird driving without it on, so it's always on :)

I agree completely with Adam here, it feels very strange not wearing one, I also feel very unsafe, it gives me a feeling of security wearing one, even if it is false :|

My mate's 205 GTi has bucket seats with 4 point harnesses in, I think I may get them for my car at some point in the future, trust me you need them the way we drive! :wack: :D :D

Yeah the ejector seat works well :D But I dare say it would be a little uncomfortable, and a pain to strap into to go to the shops :D So still not a perfect design :p;)

And I wasn't criticising your decision pieman - sorry if it came across like that. Just presenting the facts. I guess one of the sad things about our societies is the level of public ignorance. It's all very well for us to debate the pro's and con's of these issues given we take the time to educate ourselves - this allows us to make a decision. The vast majority of the public are not in this situation and so laws are created for "for their protection" (we are NOT going to discuss the ethics of this!). Hence the seatbelt laws.

Did not intend to put noses out of joint,
Chris. :)

I always wear mine cos it feels so strange not to. Won't dive a car if all the occupants aren't wearing their belts and will refuse to be a front seat passenger in a car if the person behind me won't wear their belt. I don't want someone flying into me in the event of an accident thank you very much.

What really get me going is when I see children and babies in cars wearing no restraints. If it were up to me I'd lock their parent up for child abuse.

Always wear mine.
Probably somthing to do with the fact that my Dad used to design buckles, and my numerous visits to the factory when I was a kid to watch the test rig coming to a complete stop from 20-30mph in about 10cm, and the dummy staying firmly in his seat :)

Even when I was messing about driving on a big field with the BMW I wore it. It felt wierd not to, and I reckon it keeps you in your seat nicely for hard cornering :D (not as good as harnesses though ;) )

Very impressed that my 1 in 5 has been disproved on this site anyway:D

The reason I posted is that my cousin is currently in Basidon intensive care after a nasty accident near Wickford 2 weeks ago.

Got out of it lightly (comparatively) as he has a fractured pelvis from the seat belt:rolleyes:

However, I don't really want to consider what might have happened had he not been wearing one:eek:

Racing Seat & Harness for trackdays. Its fooking annoying everyday at 7 in the morning! :wack:

Doh just noticed its an ancient thread lol, thought it got to 3 pages quick.

Some dickheads rolled a corsa round here. 4 people in the car. One bit his lip and took a massive chunk out of it, on was in a back brace for 6 months and the other 2 had broken legs. one because the car ran him over after he flew through the windscreen. Idiotic in my opion.

Still you think they would learn there lesson and all would be well.

But no they've been bragging about it apparently and now they just think they are more invincible, and armed with another car. What retarded thinking. People like that should be put down imo 1. because they are wastes of space. 2. to protect other people from there 'invincible antics'.

Seatbelts are there for a reason, they've been well tested and saved many a life. I always wear mine, doesnt feel right if i dont. They might do you some damage if you crash, but chances are it will be a lot less that being catapaulted out the windscreen!

Lady work mate of mine refuses to wear a seatbelt in the back, which is just plain selfish as the person in the front might save her life, but probably at the cost of their own :(

Had an accident about 12 yrs ago in a Pug 205 were it slammed into a brick wall nearly putting the passenger side of the engine in the footwell, coz the car is small and i'm large, smacked the windscreen to which i have a 8 inch scar above my eyes and just under my eye brows so quite hidden now as i wear glasses. If i hadn't been wearing the belt well i don't think i'd of been here today, still get shards of glass coming to the surface of my skin when i've been sweating, so yep wear it all the time and feel naked without it.
