purely personal but as an IT support geezer, I prefer cable broadband as you don't need a modem. just removes a level of complexity you don't need.
there's really only 2 cable providors in the uk, telewest and NTL check their websites to see if it's available in your area

ok, so in that case you need to pick an ADSL provider and the best way I've found to find out what's currently the best is to have a quick look at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/

With cable you still need a modem.

However it's a cable specific media modem not a dialing type.

I know a couple of very happy people who are on eclipse, and some more on Zen. Of course I'd recommend one myself but even though my exchange was upgraded on wednesday I'm out of the coverage area. So I need to get on a 'strictly limited to 1000 places for the whole country' extended reach pilot. And that's not at all difficult. GRRRRRRR

I use free online which is part of plusnet. I find them realy good with an excellent portal. the customer service is great to with people who actualy know what theyre talking about. Speed is consistant and I have only had some brief downtime but that was due to one of BT's core router's packing up.
I looked at the link posted and did a compare with plusnet against some of the bigger player's and they seem to beet them in most areas
