I agree, this one probably is a piece of shite. However, not all modded Maestros are. The one on my web site held the road like a limpet and would have given a 2***** a run for its money. I know JB, its still a scrabble wagon! :p

I remember driving one when they were new and being rather impressed at the time actually. Although the build quality was awful (I defy anyone to argue that point) it did handle very well compared to it's rivals. Could have used a bit more poke and a decent image though.

Totally agree. Especially about the build. My old one had a Rover 220 turbo engine producing about 220bhp. That was quite enough poke!

The one I drove was just the ordinary MG not the Turbo. I gather they suffered from torque steer somewhat...

The manufactured ones. Not the modded ones. :D Well scrabbly though...

Yep, on early cars the boost came in at around 2,800rpm, which resulted in loads of torque steer. Cars made after about '87, the boost came in higher up the rev range... about 3,200rpm to try to prevent this :)

The build quality on the 500 genuine Turbos was better than the normal ones, since they were hand built at Tickford.

Oh and Nicely, nice engine bay.

I've seen a white modded one at york drag way doing mid 12's, he even toyed with cossie's letting them get away then catchin them up and winning! First 2 gears were useless, 3rd half useless. Didn't look anything specail except for some stickers, Aquamist or something!

I dont have any specific details cos i was too young and uninterested to take note, but a friend of my brothers from Jaywick had a modded maestro track car - and (i do believe him too, cos he's not ur max power neon washer jet freak type of guy) it was somewhere around the 285bhp mark and geared for 180mph!

He also had a turbo'd 2.8i Capri which was velly velly lovely:cool:

He sold my brother an absolute shed of a Montego Turbo, had half the gearbox and engine mount bolts missing, although it oddly had a new mot supplied with it. 75 miles later it failed.
Go figure that one. Also head gasket went about a week later.
You could say he's a bit of a tosser.
Didn't he get banged up for ringing cars, he always had loads of cut up cars in his workshop?

I'll find the thread on the mg owners forum, where he proclaims his innocence and absolves himself of all blame.
Makes for an interesting read

That red Maestro belonged originally to Mr. George Mackmurdie, owner of MPI Motorsport, yes it was a quick car, although he used to tell people he raced it with the ecu disconnected. UGH?

It then turned up under the guise of Piranha Racing, once he got banged up, I think.

I think he was a fairly capable tuner, just his business etics sucked

Ah, MPI Motorsport. The crock of shite that just won't lay down and die.

Apparently, Mr. Mackmurdie is alive and kicking in Bedfordshire somewhere. I reckon his mots were legendary. Feckin tosser

I heard he got done for allsorts too, although no-one seemed very willing to disclose what he actually went away for. Very strange set of circumstances

Nicely

I believe one of the things was that a load of parts that he reported stolen and claimed insurance for were later discovered on his premises by the police.

This is his current venture: http://www.rovasystemsmotorsport.co.uk/indexx.html .

I believe he's living in Biggleswade, but can't get confirmation of his permanent address, or I'd get a warrant served on him.

jim potter

cant u have the warrent served on his business address. thought as long as he received it, then it was a done deal.

perhaps get a address from the web site

George Mackmurdie? Where do I start

That theiving faggot cnut. Sold me a shed of a Monty Turbo. Bought in Clacton MOT'd in London the day before (Jim Potter, you got the same  Go figure)

Although the disconnect the ECU thing, was true. It wasn't an ECU in the true sense of the word, it was adaptive ignition. Disconnect it and the timing would run from the distributor. Quite common on the drag MG Turbos, but the engines didn't last long on those. All disconnecting it would do is prevent the timing being retarded.

Nicely if you find him, I'll sponsor a kicking.:wack:

It amazes me that, on a forum dedicated to decent cars, so mcu h tiem is dedicated to discussing... well... maestros....

Nicely

I think that this thread shows that, for those that have actually driven one, the MG Maestro (2.0i and Turbo) were surprisingly good cars for their time, especially compared to their competition. Even today, they are capable of astounding things. People have a tendency to judge an entire model range on the failings of its cheaper models. Remember, the GTiR is in the same range as the Sunny....

As is the Cosworth a Sierra......

And also for the Price of an Escrot RS Turbo new, you could get a genuine Maestro Turbo for the same sort of money.
