View Full Version : Starting racing, which series?

It's time for some wheel to wheel racing, think I've taken track days and the like as far as I can. Not really interested in timed competition, did one sprint and it's not the sort of thing I'm after. Think I've got acceptable car control and general awareness/craft on track but as for the race pace I'll just have to wait and see. Obvioulsy there's a lot to be learnt about driving in competition over the stuff I've done so far but there's only one way to get that experience and that's to get racing, that is how I see it anyway.

Although racing my radical would be truly epic the costs are beyond me, so the likely way forward is to sell it and replace it with the new race car. I'd still have a trailer etc, so budget would be what I get for the Radical plus approx whatever it currently costs me to do track stuff with it and the 540i all over the UK and some of europe.

Where would be a good place to start? I'd like RWD if possible and entry level to get all my learning done in something I could fix easily if/when the worst happens.

Any advice/opinions appreciated,

Dunc.

MX5, MR2, Locust. Or get a bike licence and go club racing.

MX5's Ma5da Series looks like a good budget series to be in and the racing is often wheel to wheel dude

Other option is to get an ex-race car, and enter into the LMA sereies, or classic touring cars.

Before you start thinking of ex-super touring cars, I am am taking about ex-Seat Lean cups, ex-Rover tomcat challenges etc. 3k-15k.

Ohhh there is that ex BTCC 306 for sale on ebay I bet they would take an offer on that then go and kick everyones ass in the Classic Thunder series

MR2 or MX5 sounds like a good shout, would probably prefer the Mid/rear engine layout of the MR2. The caterham stuff sounds a bit pricey from what I've seen.

Hi Dunc,

Mines a REV3 N/A there is another series in which you can use the turbo'd versions, its on the same forum (see Super GT),

In terms of what needs to be done, not really an awful lot, buying your car all revisons of the MR2 are allowed and any model i.i coupe, moonrood and t-bar, bear in mind when selcecting the car that NO glass is allowed above the drivers head so the tintop coupe is the best option with a moonroof following.

the rules and regs are very tight so you can build your car (minimum weight of 1300kg) for the REV3 models and less for the lower bhp REV 1 and 2

you will need to complete the ARDS course to obtain your National B, sign up to the MSA 50 quid and sign up the the 750c motor championship thing

you need to have a
MSA approved rollcage (can be welded or bolted)
in data FIA harness
a fixed side mounted drivers seat, GRP Carbon etc etc
2.25 plumbed in Fire thing (cant spell)
cut off switches etc etc etc

theres a heap of advice on the forums and everyone is happy to lend a hand and help you out with any issues

ideally the car needs to be 'able' to pass an MOT in theroy, obviously becuase of certain points i.i exhaust and what not it wont. this makes sure that all cars are kept to a high standard

Get yourself another S13 and get in the Scottish Sports and Saloons, Your old 13 would have done fine in the right class. Either that or its XR2's and keep the Radical.

as piman said, get involved with the 750mc. really well run championships covering a whole range of classes. we compete in the formula 4 championship with our van diemen formula renault. there's a real big range of driving ability even within the f4 class. they do a bunch of championships as well as single seaters...saxmax, kits, mr2's, etc

i think it's something like £50 to join, and £100 to compete for the whole season (14 races)

Hi Dunc, couple of questions:
What's your budget for a car?
What's your budget for a season?
Do you want to stay in Scotland or are you prepared to travel (see budget question above...)?

Bike wise, it's racing, you WILL come off at some point, don't make a decision based on hoping you won't <-- Just trying to keep it realistic.

With all the members you'd think we could get a RWD series or 200sx series going lol.

Hi Dunc, couple of questions:
What's your budget for a car? 8-10k
What's your budget for a season? Tough question not worked it out completely but recon 8k?
Do you want to stay in Scotland or are you prepared to travel (see budget question above...)? Either's fine
Answered your questions above, it's a toss up between Bike Sports and Scottish Sprint championship at the moment. Both in the Radical, I'd like to race it if possible it is after all a race car.

Maybe 2011 in the sprint champs getting experience for the wheel to wheel stuff in 2012?

I think "Bike Sports" is a series for racing cars with bike engines in the 750 club IIRC.

I thought he was talking about bike racing at first too.

what about the bmw kumo cup or what ever they call it?
i looked at the ford Xr2 championship and it was like £3000 for a car and about £100 entry per round.

You could do that, it would get you more familiar with pushing the limits of the car before throwing other cars into the mix. How hard do you think you're pushing it now?

Are you running radial slicks on it? They are difficult to get used to so I hear.

Someone above mentioned Scottish Legends. In my opinion this would be a great choice:

Meets your budget for a car
Not too far to travel
RWD, bike engined
Big grids
Light car = small trailer and less fuel!!!

(Sorry it's a crash vid!)

I would recommend taking a trip to watch one of their races and have a chat with the drivers. You don't want to race with a bunch of tw@ts do you! :D

At the end of the day, only you know what you want to race. People who race will always recommend their series as the best choice.
HTH,
Raz :)

Yeah but I wasn't even fully aware what was out there etc prior to this thread so it's been very useful. Think I'm just going to give the Bike Sports a go in my current car, better the devil you know :wack:

I'll need to get some stuff done to it over the winter for the regs, only one that's a pain in the ass is fitting a reverse :annoyed:

Oh and I don't really know how fast I am and currently use michelin radial slicks.

Cheers folks

I tried to find some Bikesport lap times for KH but it appears they haven't been there before:
