Ok, hello
I wasnt going to start this thread yet but im soooo excited about the hole project i cant keep my mouth shut :D
S14 has gone to its new home , here is its replacement, considering iv never even looked at the chassis befor, just thoght "I want that one" and i know diddley squat about 2jz's iv got my work cut out!!!! Im not even sure if the engine will fit in the hole yet :wack: Thogh there is an rb26 left hooker knocking about that gives me some reasurance that things will kinda fit.
So i pic this up early next week :D ugly fecker aint it :wack:

http://i595.photobucket.com/albums/tt37/AZG35/Lowered/P5151025.jpg
So, plan is get the car on the ramp early next week and asses the chassise, steering and suspension, to see what iv let my self in for and see what can be done.
Then strip it down to a rolling shell, selling most of it :wack:, trial fit the 2jz then off to have a cage fitted.
Then its just a bit vauge from then on :D
Im set on a 2jz at 600hp and have one lined up but there is another engine potential also 600hp but 3.8ltr v6 twin turbo ;) Just got to work out if i can relisticly do that as it would with out doubt be one of the coolest modern drift cars!!
Watch this space, im sure its going to get interesting :D

Lol, its actully easier to do the vr38 but its quite a bit more expensive, it would be fecking cool thogh, 1st in the world, saying that 2j would be 1st in the world.:wack:
Itl work out about £4k more to do the vr38.
Good on you for trying something new
Not my cuppa tea though, you should have just bought an E39 M5 and turbo'd it :wack:

I have seen the RB26 conversion done, but this is the first 2JZ i have come across, although that would be a favourite engine, i still fancy an LS1,2 swap, the fir rather well, and you can buy the oil pan, engine mounts and drive shaft conversion kit from the states for $1800, if you need to any mechanical/tech info on the G35 let me know as I've done a fair bit of digging:)
Oh! and i know 2JZs pretty well, as i only sold my 500BHP Supra recently.

Nice to see something a bit different! Good luck mate
Ok people, if any one knows any one after some parts for one of these please put them my way lol, want to shift every thing bar the shell, panels and suspension.
Been doing a bit of research on the chassis, seems they have major problems with chassis flex, with windscreens cracking and suspension snapping!!!! So it looks like il be doing alot more chassis prep than i planned, seam welding and cage throgh the bulk head to turrets, ditching the idea of Nass car style door bars for the more ridged X type and also trying to find a steel rear subframe from another nissan with the same fit(cant remember the name Enos maybe??)in place of the alloy one.
Looking forward to seeing this done:nod:

same chassis/suspension layout, reduced suspension bracing under the car though - few frames missing, nothing a good cage wouldn't fix :D
looks like a good project, be interesting to get it past the steering column :D

Where did you get the chassis info? Infinity site? would be interested to know where the limitations/weak spots are, i know they run chassis braces in the US, but they do tend to go a bit OTT because they can, i thought that the chassis being essentially the same as the 350Z that they should be pretty good with little flex?
Must admit that i found the limits pretty quick, and i find the handling just not as good as a well set up Supra, been looking at knocking up some kind of stiffening for the chassis myself, but not sure where to start first, and I'm getting lazy in my old age:wack:
Oh! i see you're over on the 350GT forum, there is a guy there asking for some parts.
Ahhh, in that case I was passed out after Ken forced me to drink 2 litres of JD and another litre of Makers Mark and also nearly got me arrested :D
Supercharged V8 engine shouldnt be overlooked either mate ;)

The info i got was based on a 350z shell, from some one who has already delt with two high spec drift 350z's. I have heard the handling is a bit crap so chassis prep and development is a must.
Whos after parts? Name please lol

After some of the stories of a number of failed R35 engines, i would give them a miss, in favour of a supercharged LS1,2 or 3, should be somewhat cheaper to.
Got my mate to draw up my rollcage design tonight as i tryed it with pen and paper, it just wasnt working out lol :wack:
This is obv not to scale, is to purley to show the design so i can pass it to the guy making the cage. Obv there will be gusets down the A and B post, along with tying it in any where that is close to the body. The bar accross the floor will have a removable brace attached to the two spreader plates that will go under the gear box. Im not 100% sure i can run the front tubes exactly like this until i have the dash out and inspect the bulk head and turrets, it will also be a smaller diamiter tube and the main hoop a larger diamiter. Il most likely be adding in a few more tubes at the back to tie in to the rear subframe. Also the rear turrets will be getting extra plates as il be converting the rear suspension to coil spring over damper.

I was going to but the price of used body parts makes it un feesable, its cheaper to buy a complete one and sell what i dont need
Any way i got it last night and went streight to Garage-D for myself, Julian, Matt and Walton to have a good look at the chassis and see whats what. Also collected the front sump and prop for the 2jz. The 2jz and r154 box also turned up, so il chuck up some pics later :)
Nice one Polo.
One question though.
You said it's cheaper to buy a decent one then strip it and sell the parts rather than buying a damaged one and repairing it due to cost of panels. Well won't that be a problem for drifting as it's going to get alot of damage?
Looking forward to the pics

Alot of people have said this, A) i plan not to damage it B) i know i will :wack: C) for road every thing needs to be nice etc, for this, if i bend a panel il just imprevise and make it streight again. You may ask why i dont do that with an already crashed one, this is coz i want it to be nice the 1st time its used and all the crash damaged ones iv seen are either too far gone or parts have already been taken off.

Ah, that makes sense then. I do like point 'A' though lol.
Just make sure once it's finished and looking mint that you get some decent photo's to help promote your company ;).
Just out of interest, if this already has a 3.5 litre V6 engine, why not just rebuidl this and twin turbo it?
I thought you could get high power that way?
What are the benefits of 2j over this route?
Cheers.

Indeed, isnt the GTR based on this engine?
The turbo'd VQ35's that have been used in UK drifting have suffered cooling problems, and Ill wager that for the price of the TT kit alone you can have a JZ with the powers he is looking for.

£6k for 2jz fitted and 600hp:thumbs:
I was looking at the cosworth stuff for the VQ the other day and that sure isnt cheap either.

hope you are joking scottie!
the 2jz is a rock solid powerhouse..
the vq engine has been known to have multiple issues with turbos..
wether or not it is the base engine for the gtr or not is irrelevant..
obv nissan have the means to make it work.. polo is one man!
No, I'm not joking just know very littel about these engiens and was interested to hear why etc

The std VQ35DE will not take more than 350- 400BHP in std form, and that is at the "will it go pop any minute" stage,
Even with a Cosworth fully built and forged TT engine , i know someone on the 350GT forum who has suffered no end of problems running 600BHP, and resulted in several rebuilds, i suspect an R35 engine would be far cheaper in comparison, but i also know of several that have failed.
Saying the VQ35 is the same basic design as the VR38DETT R35 lump, thats about it!
The 2JZGTE is one of the few old school over engineered super strong engines in std form, mine was running 500-550BHP, and i know of plenty that run 5-600BHP on standard internals without complaint, not many that will put up with that, however i still have a soft spot for the LS engines, and IMO they make great drift engines, with bags of low down torque where its needed.
Glad to see you went this way polo, cant wait to see the progress.
Didnt Top Secret build one of these aswell a while back?
Cheers Aj
Ok, collected the car last night and headed to Garage-D to collect the front sump needed for the conversion and the prop.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/P0l0200sxy/003-10.jpg
While there we chucked it on the ramp to inspect the chassis, see what could be done etc.
We mesured the wheel base and its 12" longer than an s14!!! Thogh the car may not be longer the G35 has hardly any over hang. Its also 2" wider.
Other things i noticed wer its got a saloon type boo where the window stays down unlike a Z. Also on the way back i found its got DVD player and TV lol. And its got twin front lower arms like the modern BMW's, Jags Audi etc, i thoght they had one solid lower arm.
Back at HQ this morn, the last pics youl see of it looking like a normal car and the 1st!

Im sure you could make the front seats fit, thogh they are huge and fully electric, even the tilt forword bit to get im the back is electronic. The rears are laods bigger than s14.

Very cool project.. looks like you will struggle getting it further back unless you mod the sump. Cood look.. i am probably one of the only people that actually likes this car... Really hate the look of the front but there is a fair bit that can be done.. The rear is very cool and modern.. I actually like the inside as well...

The girlfriend will be doing getting that crap off lol.
The engine only looks lost as it's got no manifolds or turbo.

Ugly cars though, but i bet its going to look/sound mean as hell when its low and wide with the Tamiya rear spoiler :D
Engine seems to sit nice and low too
I like it!!
I actually quite like the shape too.... i don't know where all this ugly stuff is coming from?

Does anyone do a replacemnt front end for the G35 coupe? I dont mean different kit etc but maybe a different front off another car like strawberry?
actually... something like this...

Its specifically made for the G35, thats the only one i know of, all the rest are just theme's on the original, the R35 is popular in the states but people here think it sucks, personally i quite like it but then i like being different:nod:
Probably a very good option for drifting as they will be far less expensive to replace than a std front.

Unfortunately the G37 front is not an easy fit, it would require the wings and the bonnet, also that is not a std G37 front.

This is going to be one very interesting project !!!
Ok, time for an update, cast is off my arm now and feels loads better so its full steam ahead!!!
So got the car int he back of the workshop jacked up and sat level.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/P0l0200sxy/019-10.jpg
Next was to get the right bellhousing on the box, get the box mounted to the motor and get the motor in the final posision! This took a good few maybe 4 hours to get right!!

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/P0l0200sxy/022-7.jpg
Why it took so long was due to having to take in to account clearance on clutch master, steering colomn, sump, subframe, inlet and exhast manifolds.

Managed to get it quite far back, front pulley is flush with the front of the front wheels and the ARB (note back on the 1st few pages this is where the vq35 sat too. And that 3 cylinders shorter)

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/P0l0200sxy/034-5.jpg

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/P0l0200sxy/091-3.jpg
Neither the engine or gearbox mounts are finished yet, just fitted for now until iv made the sump, then once i take the motor back out to do the rest of the shell prep il finish the bracing on the mounts.
Started to make the sump, mesured it takes 5ltrs, so once im done i want it to hold as close to that as poss again.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/P0l0200sxy/096-1.jpg
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/P0l0200sxy/097.jpg

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/P0l0200sxy/102.jpg
Been at it again today, got the sump prety much finished! Left on of the sides open until iv made the new pick up, to make it easier. Also need to do a leak test on it once the welding is finished.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/P0l0200sxy/012-13.jpg
Phase two, make it hold 5ltrs again,
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/P0l0200sxy/023-12.jpg
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/P0l0200sxy/035-5.jpg

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/P0l0200sxy/059-5.jpg
So i got the engine back out to sort the trany tunnel, slight bodding needed to clear the bellhousing.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/P0l0200sxy/064-3.jpg
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/P0l0200sxy/070-2.jpg
Thats as far as i got! My angle grinder died so need a new one of them befor i continue, next it to trianglate the engine and gear box mounts. Then get the rest of the sound proofing out and start the seam welding.

How you gonna stop any possible oil surge issues? I'e when you break really heavily and all the oil slids forwards away from the pick up?
I'm assuming you'll baffle additional secion!? You'll have thought of this but just thought I'd ask.

1 and 2jz's dont suffer with oil surge any way, the pick up is getting moved forword in the sump any way. I was looking at ways to add bafling when i was making it, but its not a major concern due to the fack they dont get surge. I do have an aquasump here i can fit if needed too :)

Im not 100% sure what im doing with the dash yet, thogh it will be looking tidy, il most likely be blending in alot of it and either flocking or painting it black. Im not having any gauages in the car, just a digi dash, boost controller, AFR meter and knock meter.

Not on this no! It's defo structural on this unlike the s14, this has a big beam going throgh it. I'm also converting it to coilovers on the rear which it's was never designed for so need as much there as poss.
Ah right, knew there would be a reason for it. Thanks.

Quick question, during your strip down so far, is there any area in particular that you have noticed that would benefit the road car, by being braced or strengthened, or adjusted?
And iv got on with some of the seam welding, the welding its self takes hardly any time, its the cleaning the paint and sealer that takes ageees!!
Dont I know it, however there was still 2 days of solid welding too.
Liking the triple door bars

Your right :wack:
Na i didnt get lazy, i spent ages marking it out perfect and all square, i drilled the 8 top holes and then turned it up side down in the vice and done the other 8! If it was done on a pille drill it would have been perfect, but hand drills allways wonder a bit!!
Piller drill is on list of things to get for the workshop!

bet he doesnt make it road legal
unless insurance is paid for seeing as he has acess to a tow car and trailor
why do you keep it road legal ? Is that a BDC thing ?
Just because I can, and otl be cool to take it for a blast every now and then. I think il benigit from using it a bit on the road, rather than just once a month for 3-4 hours. Also, makes sence for demos, shows for sponcers, open days etc when iv always had to spend time packing loading etc, I can just jump in it and go. Not to mention some of the events we do out of the Uk where the car is transported and I fly, it's transport out there :)

Looks great fella :)
But what did you use to get the headlights clear again?
Wax and polish? I've heard of using G3 and a polishing wheel before but I havent really got such great results as you have ???
Loads of Porsches and an Alegro, awsome. Big fan of V35's and loving this
Cheers guys.
I used a light rubbing compound and damp cloth then just resin polish. I didn't want to use the mop as the lights are £1050 each new and could melt the lens! But I have used g10 and a mop on other lights.

If you don't mind me asking where did you get the ally alloy from for the fuel rail?
From Austrailia, a place called RoosMachineShop iirc, they have an eBay shop, if you search fuel rail excursion and go international sellers youl find it :)

nope, as oppposed to a steel, magnesium, titanium, (insert other metal here) alloy.

Tbf, there fast and cheap, was less than £50 iirc and turned up in less than 7 days.

Got a Dymo to do sticker lables for the switchs, but it looks poo so iv borrowed a Brother lable printer. This is what it looks like with Dymo, prety poo, not to mention how crooked they are!!
The Brother is much better, prints smaller so i dont have to abbreviate so much and its black print on white back, so will be better in the dusk to see.

Iv got a 100mm intercooler to go between the crash bar and the coolers, currenty there is only a 90mm gap, but trimming the bar and moving the coolers will see it in there no problem.

So thats it for now, waiting on a few bits to turn up now and some things to sell, bank is empty!!!
Seriously amazing work! I need to get my oil cooler up high and protected.
Awesome :)

That isn't half a squeeze between the pullies and rad fans!
if you rotate the front housing so the outlet faces accross towards the passanger side strut top you will be able to have a 135 degree bend on top of the rocker covers that will then face towards where you are now and will have no problems with a nice smooth rad.
or even better just get a 90 degree silicone. that way itll fit in nicely strait on top of the turbo. and even the tightness of a silicone bend is still smooth and good flowing on the long side turn which is the important one.
i took ~3 feet of intercooler piping out of my set up and it made no difference whatsoever to spool up or response. so personally for the sake of the bonnet one tightish bend wont hurt
Cheers guys!
Time for an update!
Been busy mocking up the front end, pipe work, coolers etc!! Damn its tight up there! If i ever have a bump on the front il be out for that day!! Hence the crash bar staying there, among other reasons!

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/P0l0200sxy/040-10.jpg
They have 90deg bends on which tuck up nicely along side the rad, sending the pipes off in the right direction.

Masive thanks to Japspeed for a hole host of parts, including all the alloy pipe work, exhaust parts, suspensions arms, intercooler, rad.....

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/P0l0200sxy/075-4.jpg
The intercooler pipe work is now ready for welding, just going for one pipe each side, so less silicon needed.
Trick with the pipe work on this is to keep it high on the hot side so i can get the air filter under it, seing as there is not alot of space the filter will be up against the pipe work, so having the hot pipe high is better for heat reasons. Also the pipe work has to be as far forward as poss as the wheels are not far from each corner, giving hardly any room infront of the wheel, especialy on lock!

Cheers guys :)

Yep just a load of bends trimmed to fit. There from Japspeed, they sell universal intercooler fitting kits with 2x 90deg, 2x 180deg, 2x 45deg, 2x streights and a shed load of macalor clamps and silicon! Much much cheaper than buying individual bends and really good quality bends. I got a 2.5" kit and a 3" kit, so have loads left over.

Yea lol, changed the angle of the dangle a little
Superb work mate, thats really impressive. :notworthy

Wheels will be some thing from Rota, not sure which yet, maybe grids or GTRd's trying a 12j in the stock arch soon ;)
hopefully il be able to play around with the front bumper a bit to make it look better.

Either way its going to look awesometown.
Im modding it to loose the light lol. Epracing can only get a few kits in time so its either the Dmax front or HKS, the later looks much better IMO.
EDIT! Also, i love the k2 bumper BUT!! it hangs down very low, most G's you see are on 19 or 20 inch rims so its not a problem, il be on 18s!! so its going to sit very lowe to the grownd even with a high lipped bumper.

I'll have to look at the universal japspeed kits, cant see em being especially cheap but it looks like a top job :)

Yeah, I know a bloke with a Z33 and a Chargespeed front bumper who has the same problem :wack:
This is looking very impressive Polo.
I never would of thought the engine would be a tighter fit than in an S14. Makes you realise how big the S14 bay is.
Its that time again!
Not done too much as im waiting on parts which i couldnt afford :wack: now iv sold my daily s14a i can crack on again :D

Did you need to do much bracing around the rear top mounts, to run coilovers?
Did you need to do much bracing around the rear top mounts, to run coilovers?
Seam welding the shell and the cage will be more than enough
TBH i think the chassis on this would be fine with out the extra work, if you look back throgh the pics of the inside youl see that there is alot more stregnth and bracing there as stock than any s or r body has.
i take it this car normally has separate springs and shocks, was it a custom coilover you got made or is this a common conversion??
lol, yep plastic, s14 one is plastic too, in 6 years and probs tyres into the 4 digit figers i never broke one on my s14.
So the Stock S14 cover is Polo approved :D.
This is looking awesome Paul. :D
Havent looked at this for a while but its coming along really well mate, wish i had your skills.
Cheers Aj

Yep correct, i had DriftWorks get me in a custom set  Its not common no, i think there are a few in the states using true coilovers, but not over here. (on v35 or z33)
So i went up to Earls today to get a load of fittings!! £470  and thats with 33% discount lol
