Anyone know of some frereware half decent undelete software for NTFS? Accidentally deleted a folder without checking the contents AND emptied the recycle bin:rolleyes:
ya muppet :p :D
Try "Recover4all".
PM me for the place where I've seen it at an attractive "price"
Dave

what about the reverse - and don't suggest a reformat

Use killdisk or similar for reverse. It formats the hdd over and over again so it is basically impossible to retrieve the data that was on the disk.
The undelete software works by scanning the entire disk for files.
Basically, on a FAT system the locations of the start of the files on the disk is stored in an area of the disk called the File Allocation Table. To fine the file, this table is read, and the head is directed to the start of the file. If the file is in several pieces, the end on that segment has the location of the next bit and so on.
When you delete files, all you do is remove the reference to it from the File Allocation Table (FAT). By scanning the disk, you can find the beginnings of the files, and therefore the rest of the file. Unless parts have been written over, in which case either you are fvcked or you pay a specialist thousands of pounds to recover it for you.
Dont ask me about NTFS I dont have a clue how that works.
BTW mate Im pretty sure i've got what you require now. Im at work atm but I'll double check tomorrow for you

I've found OnTrack Easy Recovery Pro (formerly Tiramisu) to be the best. I use it in work and for me it's recovered a drive that had been fdisk'd, another that had been reformatted and another that was partly corrupt and couldn't be read by the OS

Ontrack keeps craching on my computer!
Are you using the proper DOS version off a bootdisk?
Best I've come across and used is R Studio, pm me for details if you like

i think but i aint sure i used the system restore feature and im almost sure it even refilled my bin back up as long as you stop using your pc the bits on the disc can be recovered as long as you dont overwrite em again before the fix, then there gone as when you delete it doesnt move it just means the pc can overwrite these bits

I cant try the system restore as part of the cleanup involved deleting all but the latest, and stimpy I didn't realise there was a DOS version. Hunting now.
If you have the full Pro version, it can create DOS bootdisks. The DOS version works much better IMO.
