View Full Version : My Renault 5 turbo restoration project
Thought i'd share the reason i've been busy as of the last few weeks :smash:
So i took a gamble and brought the car off my cousin as a non runner, no mot or tax, water mixing with oil project
Spec is pretty much unknown but have found a few things:
Alloy header tank
ktec alloy carb top
mocal oil cooler
alloy degassing camber
ktec bored out turbo elbow
bigger alloy intercooler
samco silicone hoses everywhere
engine rebuilt back in 2006 new pistons+liners, bottom end rebuild
scorpion straight through exhaust system
clifford g5 alarm
Ecotek valve (removed as soon as i saw it)
This is how the car turned up on my door step after being towed,
Carb and turbo had both been removed and put in the footwell :)

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00245.jpg
then i started work on the engine to get the liner seals changed and inspect the rest for damage

Whilst waiting for parts to turn up from renault i decided to take the front bumper, front archs and side skirts.
Found a few medium size rusted through sections in the drivers outer sill and a small hole in the passenger side outer sill.
So far have cut out the rusted sections and put in new metal and welded it, seam sealed and painted with paint, got to do the rear of the drivers sill as the inner sill needs a bit of welding but need to drop the tank as its too close for my liking
Replaced both front wheel bearings and bottom ball joints as they were knackered
Then my bits from renault turned up :)
new heatshields as mine are missing
new headgasket kit
new rear window square trims as mine are falling apart
new sideskirt clips as most of mine have broke
Metre of brake servo hose as some knob has fitted a ecotek valve in mine
New coolant
Sump painted black by my brother
Also found out the whole car has dynamat everywhere
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/DSC00254.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/DSC00255.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/DSC00256.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/DSC00257.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/DSC00258.jpg
Rebuilt the carb
Dinner trays are good for carb rebuilds  found out some muppet had got the accel pump spring wrong way around so it was sitting on the diaphram and would of split it sooner or later
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00293.jpg
Then i got the engine all back together after cleaning the liner platforms (Drill wire brush attachment and flat screwdriver works wonders) new liner seals fitted, new headgasket
After much internet searching i found out where each samco hose should be
Engine bay now its fully functional but slightly smokey from turbo oil seal
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00301.jpg
Turned him around so i can start work on the back end so took pics of the front end all rust treated and painted black
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00299.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00300.jpg
Bolted the front bumper and pushed the broken grill back in place to look better for the moment
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00302.jpg
Now i got to fix up the back end
drop fuel tank
do small bit of welding on sills
fix the fuel pump and filter on properly
fix a fuel pipe leak
make a new reserve tank strap
raise back end as currently sitting far too low
Got to sort out the interior aswell as its a bit of a mess
Then hopefully get it to work for a mot and i just need to get the turbo rebuilt and the car onto the rolling road for a fueling check and boost increase
nice.. will be watching! :)
Finish it, finish it right now and get pics :D

Great little cars and so easy to work on.
Bought one as a project a few years ago for the measly sum of a 100 quid.

Cool project. I used to dream of having a Renault 5 turbo when I was driving around in my metro(:ghey:) when I was 17.
did a bit of filler and prep work where i had to weld in a new bit of metal on the top of the sill the other day during the week
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/tommypaint.jpg
all primered ready for a rub down and lick of paint :nodyes:
And had a decent amount of progress today :)
Sill has been painted
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00308.jpg
Drivers and passenger rear sections of sill holes has been fixed and strengthened so much its a new jacking point :D
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00310.jpg
Then the front archs, sills, floor pan, boot floor pan basically everywhere under the car has been waxoyl'd super thick :)
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00309.jpg
My reserve tank strap had rusted away and snapped and i wasnt going to pay £30+ delivery for one
So i went all blue peter on it  Mine cost £0 :smash:
Cut away snapped strap from brackets
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00311.jpg
Cut out length of metal from brothers crash austin mini
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00312.jpg
Clean brackets ready for welding, Spot welded new metal strap to brackets, welding outside in the wind with a gas mig turned out half decent :)
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00313.jpg
Temporary fit on car, bend strap to right place and measure the second bracket and mark where it needs to be welded on to get a nice tight fitting strap
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00314.jpg
Spot weld second bracket onto metal strap and you should have something like this
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00315.jpg
Then it got painted in etch and chassis black paint, and a nice sticky foam strip was cut to length to stop it rubbing through when its all bolted up :)
Then after arseing about with the exhaust to get it a perfect fit, took off the rear bumper started poking some holes and found some rather nice rusty holes to weld up  So glad i brought a new reel of mig wire and gas bottle today :smash:
Provisional mot date is beginning of october fingers crossed if i don't go rust hunting again :D

Used to always want one of these, remember my first drive in one it was awesome fun (the joys of working in a renault garage), i think out of all the renault hothatches this would be my favourite. Ill be watching this thread to see how it comes along :)
sweet buggy matey would love one., my bro has had heaps o them. will be good to see the progress
Great work so far, can't wait to see it finished.
In fact, this thread has given me a sudden urge to buy an r5 fry that I've not had since I was 17 :wack:
In fact, if I can find a cheap std one needing tlc it could be a cheap replacement for when I (sadly) sell the eunos in the spring!
God they are awesome.....Always wanted one and could never afford the insurance...Now i can afford the insurance, i cant afford the car! :(
must admit i haven't touch the car for ages
last time i worked on it a flap disc sanded the tip of my finger off (note drink responsibly not one handed grinding welds with beer in other hand)
just need to finish welding the rear arch around the fuel filler neck then put the outside back together but lacking effort :(
will be attempting to rebuild the turbo on it myself which could go.... well :D or horribly wrong
if i was to buy a r5 again i'd defo be looking at ones above 3grand and dry stored :wack:
Nice project mate, used to work on a few of these in my renault days. Great fun drive.
What headgasket did you use? Very prone to failing.
Cheers Aj
Make sure it has a banded IC if its a stock replacement, as these suffer with the IC's coming apart under pressure. Also get the head and blocks mating surfaces checked for being flat as these are renowned for being boil in the bag engines, I have rebuilt too many of these things lol.
only used a cheap £8 headgasket and reused the head bolts for the moment do have a renault headgasket in my spares collection
the engine is smoking so if rebuilding turbo doesnt fix it then guesses are on cracked head/valve stem seals
so off comes the head then the renault gasket is going on with some high tensile bolts
intercooler is a ktec or the other big name company cant remember, but i do have a binder full of invoices from many many years ago.
just a shame it got mistreated by the previous 17 owners on the log book :wack:

Always hankered after one of these and white is always the best colour:thumbs:,sat in a few when they were pretty new and they never failed to impress( yeah im pretty old:wack:)
K-tecs the big name with 5's, turbos went on these quite easy fella. Also make sure that the turbo shield is on as I have seen a few burn due to the turbo cooking sound deadening.
Great work so far.
Sold mine pretty cheap in the end because it wasn't running properly, turned out to be a simple one-way valve on the back of the carb. Really glad to see the back of it though tbh because they really don't like being sat around gathering dust.

sorry about the pic size
Many memories from uni days when traveling in the R5, wish I had one, still hanker today. Good luck with the project.
You'de be best off joining the rtoc. I've been a member for over 8 years and the guys on there constantly put the tuners to shame, all home built cars own any records for them. The quickest car ran a 10.3 @ 144mph, although that's a turbo converted 172 engine in a 5. The quickest UK c1j is now doing 125mph, while an Italian member is doing over 130mph on the c1j.
You'll soon find out a standard engine is capable of over 200bhp but you won't get over 250bhp with the carb in situ, many have tried and failed unless running nitrous. Don't for a second believe any of the tuners had 300bhp plus cars because they didn't, every home built member destroyed their et's and terminal speeds at Santa Pod many times over for many years.
There's also a big track day following on the owners club too, with good discounts.
spent all afternoon working on it with the bro
Picture of how he's sitting at the moment
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0017.jpg
Doesn't look like much but we've done a fair bit.
Removed the tailgate as its rusted away
Removed the rear seats, drivers seat, boot carpet and under back seat carpet.
Removed the show roll cage.
Fixed the rust hole on the rear bumper mount and fuel filler neck mounting.
Fixed the captive nut so the bolt that holds the drivers seat frame to the body so it actually screws into something and the seat dont flap about anymore.
Hammered off all the renault sound deadening from the boot floor and rear arch sides ready for when the floor gets repainted white.
But i got pokey screwdriver happy and found another 2 rust holes
So i've crossed a few things of my to do list but added a few aswell doh! :)

looks good .. always fancied 1 of these
I still go to a couple of the big meets, like the Pod day, where they rent out Santa Pod for the day to members. Great piss up and cheap usage on the drag strip, although I took my S14a last year:D
Mallory is also very good, they rent that out for the National day, although I couldn't say if they'll do it again this year.
I'm sure you know how knowledgable those guys are, but just as a taster, one of them works for the Renault F1 team, so they know their shit;)
Funnily enough, I went for a curry with quite a few of the old skool London based members last night (sounds weird me saying that as i'm 25 and all of them are 30 or over), and most of them have either bought Jap cars or German motors, but they still talk about projects they've bought or are planning.
started working again now the snows over

Removed the tailgate as its scrap but kept all the wiring safe.
Removed the rear seats, drivers seat, boot carpet and under back seat carpet.
Removed the show roll cage.
Fixed the rust hole on the rear bumper mount and fuel filler neck mounting.
Fixed the captive nut so the bolt that holds the drivers seat frame to the body so it actaully screws into something and the seat dont flap about .
Hammered off all the renault sound deadening from the boot floor and rear arch sides. :muahaha:
But i got pokey screwdriver happy and found another 2 rust holes
So i've crossed a few things of my to do list but added a few aswell doh! :)
The worst rusty hole less than 1 inch away from the rear seat belt mounting point :D
Some of the weld went shit near to the end as i ran out of gas and the gas regulator packed up :x
This is just the inside part of the panel i've fixed, got to do the part in the wheel arch tonight :)
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0018.jpg
Oh and you can see where i removed some of the sound deadening on the arch and floor

Looks like the welder is coming out again..... surely there cannot be anymore rust after this?
It's French mate, there'll be more rust than metal.
nearly used a whole cut out austin mini rear quarter panel just fixing the rust on this car lol

Then started to fix all the messed up wiring loom and poor clifford g5 installation that was hanging down everywhere, so out came the dash and started re-tapeing the whole thing back into shape.
Removed all the scotch lock's and crap solder joints and replaced with heatshrink crimp connectors 8)

Great work! Wish I had the time space and patience to have done something similar to mine.
small update :)
Bolted a new battery tray in.
Put a spare battery on
checked all the electrics work and everything seems good 8)
And it the engine still starts :D
Little video of it alive again albeit slightly smokey and idle a tad high
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oD_h_FQaw3I
Going to have to flush the oil as its gone a tad milky from where i couldn't drain the oil cooler so suspect it was full of water
Fitted new side skirt clips on the car and put the skirts and front arches back on and it looks like a 5 turbo again :D
MOT some time next month just need to sort the little things out first

If you want a spare wing let me know as I have a brand new front wing(passenger side I think) for a renault 5 turbo. Was given to me by a bloke at work after he cleared out a load of his step sons crap out his garage. He told me his stepson used to have a R5 turbo and said he doesnt see him any more and knew I was into my cars so gave me some bits to see if I could make use of any of it. As Im a bit of a magpie I took all I could.:D

new rear brake compensator valve as i found mine was leaking,
copper fuel lines as my standard steel lines had cracked,
new rubber hose for good measure,
and a load of jubilee clips again for good measure,
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0143.jpg
Compensator went on fine without a problem......But ..... I snapped a bleed nipple in the drivers rear caliper.... DOH! couldn't drill it out double DOH....
So off to the millfield motor factors for a new one for a lovely price of £70 and it came with a new pad carrier aswell :)
But now i have 2 new rear calipers, brakes that bleed properly and actaully stop. Also new fuel lines that don't leak out v-power quicker than it goes in lol
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0144.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0148.jpg
Then I put in some engine flush to help get any water out of the engine/ oil cooler as theoil cooler hoses wont undo without breaking the line and cooler, so its had a flush and new oil fitted after a cheeky road test up and down the road to make sure it stops lol

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0151.jpg
Then we got bored and a night free from the gf means as much time as we want to play.
So my bro finishes sanding the passenger side down and i got bored.....
Soooo i started ripping the black trim off the bumper, the brother wasn't too pleased as this now means he has alot more sanding and prep work to do muhahahaha
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0156.jpg
I've got some Goodridge braided hoses, poly bushes (powerflex I think but not 100% sure) and a few other bits lying around if you are interested in any of them? Think I have a spare throttle cable and clutch cable too.
Great work on the wheels!
ooo interesting, how old are the braided hoses? and the poly bushes..are they the front lower arm bushes or arb bushes? also what prices are we looking at?
Dont need a throttle cable or clutch cable tho fella already got a new throttle cable and clutch is working so not touching it till it breaks lol
Brand spanking new hoses and bushes (although been sat in the garage for a couple of years).
I think they are the front lower arm bushes!
I have some new front pads too but can't remember the make. Guessing you have a Haynes manual already for it too?
Not quite sure on prices will have to see how much they're worth, I guess. Will take some pics and get back to you if that's cool?
I was planning to put them on with other mods to take it on track but ended up selling it. :(
Then the front archs, sills, floor pan, boot floor pan basically everywhere under the car has been waxoyl'd super thick :)
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00309.jpg
Provisional mot date is beginning of october fingers crossed if i don't go rust hunting again :D
Cool project, mucho respect for fettling up a R5T
Why oh why though? Waxoyl  and underseal :( It's painful for me to see all this effort being pored in on an absolutely ace car, to be wasted with what I consider poor products :(:(
There are cheaper, and better products out there that will keep the tin worm at bay
R5T is a very cool car in my book  Wish I had one
yeah there is better stuff i could of used but time/money was a issue.
Since the car will be only a weekend toy and tucked up in a garage when ever it rains the cheaper solution should do fine fingers crossed
quite a productive weekend, the bro has done well even if he did look like a albino earlier

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0161.jpg
front bumper hasnt been touched other than ripping out the black rubbers.
thats most of the work we can do before getting it mot'd so i just got to put a drivers interior trim back on during the week and swap the wheels over for mot friendly ones,
Fingers crossed i make it to the mot station without having to call out rac to save me :wack:
love it!
I used to own one of these years ago, it was great fun :-) get ready to hear that clutch cable twang!
Well log story short,
friday i set off to the mot station and i got possibly half a mile away from my house,
gave it some boost in 2nd gear and didn't watch the boost gauge,
pulled up the a roundabout and cough cough cough yup running on 3 cylinders and smoking worse than ever with no power at all,
So drove it home at 40mph and a ozone killing cloud of smoke behind me.
compression, sparks and fuel all fine.....
So i blew the head gasket or a inlet gasket
Rather than mess about i stripped the engine down and this time going to build it properly rather than in 5 minutes
new turbo, piston rings, oil pump, liner seals, head gasket, head bolts, head skimmed and all the valves relapped in
the head has already had new guides by the looks of things and the valves look new too but it had a bend in the centre when checked with the straight edge so needed skimming
Got the head back from being skimmed today, and i've done the valve lapping
Spare cylinder head is screwed, det marks a plenty, corrosion pitting in the head and 3 or 4 valve seats beyond repair
few pics from the phone when stripping it down again

Altho somehow the ht king lead has broke

You'll be glad to know he has recovered from his open heart surgery with flying colours :nodyes:
He did shock me through the new king lead while we primed the heart with fluids.... foook me, it made both my arms go up and outwards
Just had to adjust his pacemaker a little bit as it was running a bit fast and rich but now its at a nice healthy pace
I let him call his previous owner so they knew he had recovered
bare in mind this video
was taken on the first start of a newly built engine the smoke is just oil/crap burning off.
the tappets are noisy as they are set at 0.20 on both sides will redo them after mot.
the turbo was noisy as the gasket was from a t28 bodged on temporary and was leaking a little - soon fixed with a little exhaust paste :nodyes:
and it was running the old setup the mixture screw was wound out at least 1-2 turns and idle dropped to a nice level
Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cjviuipPNY)
So now were upto date
Today he had his mot
Actaully got to my work so i beat my 1/2 mile record :D
Passed his mot ok
Only advisorys was
oil leak from sump (think the flywheel side half moon seal moved when the sump went up)
Antiroll bar bushes cracking
Slight play in steering rack internals
Had to slow the idle speed down and the co was 2.10 :D not to bad considering it was set by ear :)
now to fix an overboost issue and oil leak then its respray time :D
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0304.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0304.jpg
Respray is in t-minus 2 weeks :wack:
Alot of prep work is still to be done on the body/doors,
The front bumper needs at least 2 full days on it to get it ready for paint
Think my brother and i have biten off more than we can chew with only 2 weeks to get it done

Bad boy louvered bonnet unknown origin?
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/209506_10150534884085150_854295149_18181581_833995 7_o.jpg

Come to the conclusion that it wont be used ever as,
1. the bonnet needs that much repair work i have no energy left to do it
2. it doesn't suit the car imo
3. my brother hates it and thus wont paint it for me
your brother is a man of standard and to be commended imo:D get a standard one on there mate!! in fact a friend of mine may have one from a max power front page feature car,I will ask him tonight:thumbs:
you need some clio 16v turbine wheels too:D
no to the 16v wheels their like rota's on 200's everyone has them
standard bonnet is already prepped and put back on and the louvered one in garden rusting away ;)
best i not show the gt tuning boot wing then :wack:
Looking really good this car.
In my opinion they are at their best when well kept and standard looking.
Will look good painted

its not been flatted and polished yet so still a bit "factory finish" here and there but that'll all be done in a few weeks at home
8 o'clock start tomorrow morning reftting everything ready for the drive home where all the trims will get fitted on and cleaned etc
ive been quietly following this thread and really pleased to see the car getting paint now, good work mate be nice to see a rare minty fresh r5t.
Me too ;) Looking rather nice there. Can't wait to see it all back together. Hopefully the bacofoil (oops, I meant lovely Renault bodywork :wack:) will last a good few years with all that prep and restoration work
Yet another quiet follower here
Paint looks tidy, coming along well

Still a few trims to fit etc but the most has been done and we can have a rest for a week
BUT its not all good news! Like a true renault 5 it has a new problem.......
Its clutch has decided that with the newly rebuilt engine and all the new power plus a spirited drive home, the clutch didn't like it and started to slip on full throttle after 3k
So new clutch time yay....
Looking fantastic.
superb just went through the thread fantastic work looks great:notworthy
Love this project, Fantastic work & it will look great when finished i bet:whip:

ooooff, thats lovely
thanks for the comments everyone
He is doing well. I have done 60miles+ and he hasn't broken down yet :wack:
Slight scrubbage when hitting the odd bump thats with 2 tyres and 2 people in the car. Making me regret these cheap 55 profile toyo t1rs now
Attempted to raise the back end tonight by starting on the side with no torsion bar grease cap on so thats nicely rusted solid :furious:
Going to need a big slide hammer to do this me thinks :smash:
Loving this, have followed from the start, great project
Gearbox is out with the engine in situ.
Its tight but not hard as i've not sworn at it yet this morning.
Big thanks to mike at gt turbo spares for the uprated clutch

Yup thats a hole in the diff and some pretty deep grooves,
The shaft bearings looks fine and theres no pieces floating in the other half of the diff...
On the hunt for a new one might try scrappys tomorrow
If no luck then i'll put it all back in and buy one from renault and do it in situ with the shaft out
So the list of things found wrong:
No roll pin in o/s driveshaft
Rear main oil seal fitted wrong way round causing my oil leak thats gone over the flywheel and clutch
Gearbox n/s diff section has a hole in it and deep grooves
The bro did some cleaning while i removed the gearbox

Never been a fan of the r5 gt but blimey even I'd love that! Great work
Any spare turbo system bits give me a shout as I'm building a k10 carb turbo Micra, just got an r5 intercooler and a t3 :)
ahh k10 turbo, i used to have 2 k10s one 1ltr and 1 1.2 super s, still got loads of spares kicking about, spare set of super s dials albeit with a crack in the clear plastic and maybe have the wiring looms not sure, front strut brace, erm loads more i think

Strut brace for a k10? I'd be very interested in that! I was going to cut up a k11 one to try get it to fit
Yup its a proper k10 one took me fooking ages to find one, its been repaint in tesco blue by my brother and it just hanging up in my garage on the wall.
I'll grab some pictures of it tomorrow fella

there is a few good 440 turbos in here hiding
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110430_140452.jpg
Rolled over a 440 1.8 no turbo and got to work

Ok cheers dude
finished off today
Bailey dump valve removed after finding it was leaking when we was cleaning it
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110501_113033.jpg
Then we found out a knocking noise from the drivers front wheel when pulling it in and out at the top
Found both top mount bolts loose enough to move
Tried undoing one and it snapped
So off with the drivers strut which turns out to be koni adjustables then ground off the captive nut and rewelded a new nut to the bracket
Refitted it and took out the passenger sides and copper greased them up for good measure and jobs a gooden
Then we decided to put the strut brace on since "fingers crossed/touch wood" all the engine work is done
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110501_133203.jpg
We then cleaned up the earths on the front of the car and put the bumper and bonnet back on
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110501_141225.jpg
Took it for a spin up to tesco and treated the car to a full tank of 99 octane, then popped round to halfords for a new clio rear wiper blade and some satin black so we can paint the wiper arms next
Feels good being able to give it full throttle in any gear without having to worry of it slipping anymore

quality thread, just read it from start to finish, you have the added accolade that i have never done this before! i love french hatches, i was always into 205 gti's tho, but did look at a r5t!
New grill has turned up
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110510_170530.jpg
Bargain price even with mates rates as i know the parts bloke :wack:
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110510_170538.jpg
Brother will be painting the grill sometime this week for me.
In the meantime he has supplied me with a 1275cc Mini A series engine block.
Which i need to start building into a turbo block as payment for his help/paintwork on the 5  nothings ever for free
Time to update
Grill painted and fitted on, it finally has a sexy looking face rather than a black hole
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110512_173942.jpg
Then plugged the aem uego on
Majorly lean as boost hits :(
So ordered a new fpr from renault
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110514_125155.jpg
Which didn't fix it.. DOH! oh well its another shiney part fitted :wack:
So onto the lean issue
Tried a few things like accel pump adjustment - no difference :(
Whilst doing a power run down the road the accelerator cable fell out the linkage  - fixed on roadside :D
Found a nice major oil leak from the rocker going onto the exhaust making a bit of smoke
So after that i got moody...got home and put the car in the garage (Its favorite place)
Took off the strut brace, rocker cover and carb
Fixed the rocker cover leak
And proceeded to strip down the carb + a good spare on in the garage that hasnt been used for a while
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110514_212248.jpg
And found this little bugger was semi blocked
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110514_212254.jpg
So swapped it out for a good spare, and reset the accel pump with a 5mm drill bit
Then i thought lets go for a bar of boost, so swapped the ac jet for a 1mm and drilled the 2nd stage to a 1.2mm and fitted everything back together.
Just need to get a new fuel filter and bleed the coolant and see what we have tomorrow on the aem... fingers crossed at 10psi it overfuels enough for me to up the boost a little to 14 psi :D
Still dont know if its fixed the lean issue but i know it is clean and polished :D

completely forgot about them
if you could pm with some details and pics i'll probably have them :)
Looks great, as does the min

Cool, it'll have to be some day late next week as I can't get to the garage at the moment. :)
Is the 5 running 100% now?

need to raise the boost a bit more and think about ignition timing control, tweek the tdc sensor or chuck a megajolt on it or an adaptronic ecu
Should be much better and less of a spike of power when i've changed to a better boost controller rather than the bleed valve i had kicking about and used in a rush :D
Nice. :) Do you have any major plans for the engine or is it just a "see how it goes" car?
Have you seen Scoff's 5 on RTOC? It's got a 182 engine with a turbo strapped on it, running quarter miles in the 10s last time I looked.

Hey Bud, Cracking job there, i love that paint booth!!! wow!
Car is lovely, always wanted one of these back in the day, but they were all very high maintenance, and renault are thieves!!!
My best mate had one of these back in the 90's when we were at Uni. He had a similar bonnet with the Louvres (not bad boy :wack: ) A company called cool Louvres used to do them, and you could chose how many and where you wanted them
GT tuning was also used by him, and he had a bare shell respray in BRIGHT ferrari red, very nice.
Carisma was up and coming then, only a small company.
He had endless problems with his too.. i remember on the way back from brighton one day, the heat shield caught fire  and we put it out using a bottle of coke :wack:
Endless pit of money that car :D one thing worth checking is the fuel pump, i remember his was dying and he had intermittant problems.
OK well where do i start since the rolling road
Tappets got really noisy, so aroudn 600 miles on the engine thought a reset tappets and fix the poxy rocker cover leaky fibre washers would be good
So stripped it all down started to adjust and then thinks why is the cylinder 2 rocker shaft bolt moving grabed the bolt and it pulled straight without any effort
The threads stripped out completely which i can only think back to when i missed and gear and over rev'd it alot
So i helicoiled and put a new bolt in job done i thought?...... nope turning both cylinder 2 push rods they have a very slightly bend in them
So adjusted it up for now and the engine still idles sweet and drives smooth.
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110612_175259.jpg
Forward on a few weeks of the car being garaged up not being drive to today..
The day before i go to modified live at brands hatch....thinking i could get a 20 mins session with the 5
So got to work all good no leaks
Drive home was great, driving it quite quickly on the motorway overtaking and listening to radio 1 loudly... slow down for my slip road
WTF is that noise... sounded like a grrrrrrrrr, so change into 4th and noise gone change back into 5th and grrrrrrrr
Still got drive in 5th so thought maybe the nut had worked loose
Got home jacked it up f1 pit crew styley
Within 10 mins the cover was off and foudn the problem, it soon came clear that I wont be taking the 5 to brands hatch tomorrow or being able to drive through dartford tunnel on the way home
5th gear nut is tight but 5th gear is missing a few teeth look in the cover and found the teeth and some needle rollers from a bearing in there
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110624_173124.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110624_173159.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110624_180732.jpg
Now the count down begins as the car is booked for snetterton track day taster on the 24th of july
So i need to get a gearbox in for that as a temp fix or swap 5th gear over and hope the rest of the box is fine or find a good refurbed box to put in
Silane, you'll have to let me know how much you want for all them parts as i do need all of them but atm i need a gearbox :wack:
 So what happened? Did that happen whilst changing gear?
well i found 5th gear oil feed pipe has sheered off the cover at some point so looking at the bits in the cover there is a needle roller bearing which i think has failed and took the gears out at the same time
strangly it still selected 5th fine just a made a bit noisy :wack:
Right busy evening for me
Went over to cambridge to collect my win on ebay and i've scored alot more than i thought
won on ebay
head
gearbox
carb
loads of interior switchs
+ got given for free
a set of push rods

exhaust manifold
water pump + housing
fuel regulator
rocker cover
uprated head bolts which i'll bin as new ones are cheap enough

Stripped the head down to a bare head, valves and springs ready for measuring thickness and straightness then of for a crack test and skimming in the future when money allows
Gearbox stripped down
Cover is good and 5th gear is fine :D just need to find out how to swap them in situ as this gearbox is too manky internally to put in the car
Taught the bro how to strip a 5 carb and check jet sizes. its all standard jets so i'll be ultrasonic tanking it to make it uber clean through out and treating it to gasket set
been having a go trying to get these gears off with no pullers that fit at home
Screwdrivers + blow torch and hammer = :D
5th gear and everything is off :D

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110630_180136.jpg
Now time to order a curry from the local and then take the one off the car in situ, this could get interesting
Might have the car back for the weekend at this rate 8)
Might have an issue
Doner 5th gear's are different sizes, thickness, design and ratio's, to what i have on the car
The doner is jb3 032 and the one in the car is jb3 014, both have the same diff ratios and gear ratios so they should be the same, yet visually there different gears
So did a bit of checking and i think someone has swapped mine over before for maybe a campus gearset at some point as thats the only guess i have as to why they are different and the reason behind me finding bits of needle roller in the casing with the gears
After finding what other bits i need to swap to make it work without grinding the casing it was all put back together with loctite

Update time
Been giving him some tweeking over the last week while he's been garaged up after a 2 week daily use mission with no problems
Replaced all the blowns dash button bulbs and dial bulbs now i can see what i'm pressing
Strut brace is back on
Fiddled with the carb enrichment pump adjustment
Carried out the "cup" mod now boost is up to around 16-15psi
Then last saturday the track prepping began for snetterton track day
Took him out after putting in 200ml of millers extra cool (3.6% mix with renault premix coolant and a bottle of millers octane booster to stop any det that may come with the increased heat from 20 mins of abuise
Coolant temps are now alot more steady than before.
When giving it some abuise the temp moves up a little but not half as much as before but the temp comes down alot quicker than before so its doing its job well
Adjusted the brake bias as it was majorly to the rear so i could bed the new pads and disc's in. So now its more to the front.
Changed the oil aswell still using mineral oil for now as its working fine and i want to make sure its bedded in 100% as i've only done 950 miles since i built the block, will wait till around 1500 miles before i start using semi synth
Then some pictures from snetterton
Got some pictures sent to me from sunday

Excuse the manky oily subframe its just what is left from the gearbox overhaul.
Had to shave off a few mm off the wishbone bushes with a grinder to make them fit into the subframe without having to bring out the big hammer.
Wishbone bush was red but after burning out the old bushes it was hard to keep my hands clean

So an order was placed...

So with the rear calipers already replaced a while back i felt the need for more shiney bits and since the front calipers are the only ones left on the car which were old, manky and had a slightly sticky piston on the passenger side....
2 new front calipers turned up aswell

Then tonight i have been swapping over the old red dot pads and unknown discs for my new shiney brakes
New stuff fitted

Old brake disc not looking very healthy at all

Now i'm just waiting on some brake hose securing clips from renault as mine will probably fall to bits as soon as i go near them lol and it would look wrong having new hoses and old manky clips.
Then its back to the rear axle in an attempt to raise it up a few mm or so but that will be next week's mission
After begging the boss for time off,
i've booked a couple of taster sessions so i can shakedown the car with the new stuff on
30th August at bedford autodrome on the gt circuit
8th september will be the return to the great snetterton 300
If all goes well without any big problems then i'll start doing some full day track days
love it, have a bit of a soft spot for 5 turbos,
after a chat with a friend who rallys one i will basically just pass on the message to you from him,
"throwing away the stock carb and installing injection is the best thing ive ever done, its increased drivability, low down torque, up top power and throttle response"
all hes done is installed the injection system from an R19 16v with a mappable piggyback ecu. had some injector bosses welded into the stock manifold, and fitted a throttle body to where the stock carb used to be.
he is propperly good at setting up and tuning the origional carb set up but hes totally sold now with the injection and wishes hed never spent so long pissing about with the carb,
he runs 240bhp with the t25 turbo and its an absolute animal, i do still chuckle when i see all the scary mess of pipes etc under the bonnet of the R5, its scary to look at let allone work on ha,
