View Full Version : credis new motor - vag content
well, i sold my s14a back in may to get something a bit more comfortable and economical for my new job at a local estate agency firm. Have always waned to see what these are like so thought i would take the plunge.
Its a 99 Volkswagen Golf mk4 GTI 1.8 turbo. It has heated leather Recaros and upgrade BBS split wheels ( or split effect im not 100 per cent ). Its alright, nice and comfy and pulls pretty well as it has been serviced every 6k as opposed to the manufacturers recommendation of 20k. No rust or mechanical problems ( touch wood ). Overall a decent car.
Problem is, im not sure if its actually that much more economical as my 200 as it is pretty heavy  , ah well, itll do for the moment.
Plans are simple really. subtle mods. lowering springs, stubby ariel, clear repeaters, r32 rear spoiler and possibly the Anniversary front splitter. Ideally, though would like another s14a within the next 2 years and keep this one for work. . . best get selling some houses!

I take it the previous owner kept the number plate? That's worth a bob or two.
unfortunately so ross. was interested in making a bit of money back . . . until he asked for it back :( haha
If it's the fly-by-wire engine I think they remap to 210 bhp.
i believe it is phil. i would like to get it remapped, but at the same time, i wouldnt like to sacrifice economy :(

Thought you could get 220 bbl without any issues. Should be reliable also as that's what the tt's run :)
well,if it didnt mess with the economy too much maybe a remap is the answer then ! whos the best down in the southwest for them, if any ? alternatively , i think revo tec are supposed to be pretty good?

the mk4s are starting to grow on me (after a bad experience with my sisters mk4 130 TDI and a mysterious clunk that went back to a dealer 6 times in the first 13k miles :wack:) and then a mate buys one and asks me to do coilovers, ARB etc.
my advice: don't bother changing the anti roll bar, i just did it for a friend on his mk4 GTI and you have to drop the entire sodding front subframe to get the original out. (it sits on top)
and importantly, the one he replaced the stock one with was the same sodding diameter except painted red and didn't have a kink for the exhaust, i was laughing to hide the tears.
hi guys . does anyone know of anywhere around the southwest that can remap my car for a bit more oomph? starting to get a bit bored now

Yep. They have a decent rep from what I have heard also
If it helps they are on Taunton road in bridgwater:thumbs:
Thats a big fail on the reason for buying the car:wack: it will use more fuel than a stage 1-2 s14a:nod: My friend has one though and got considerably better mpg once his was remapped:nod: however its still only 210bhp and nowhere near as fast as an s14a whilst still only just levelling with it on fuel consumption. Ithink they are great cars though tbh, although I really dont like the fly by wire throttle:( black is definitely the best colour:thumbs:

not all of them are fly by wire - some are traditional pulleys.
ill mention the remap to my friend, he'd probably like better fuel consumption.
thanks for the advice guys. the reason for buying the car wasnt for the fuel economy alone, it was because my job required me to have a car that i could actually comfortably take passengers to viewings in, otherwise i would have kept the 14a. will look into the remapping :)

ha ha,I was an estate agent a few years ago too and had an s13 wound as low as apex gen 1s go with a welder:D clients loved it!!! or if they didnt I just used the pool car:wack:
hmm, well. today the car developed a problem. :-
basically, when i come off the throttle there is a strange vibration/grinding noise. it dissappears when i put power down. very confused!
may just have to buy another s/body !

http://www.custom-code.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=306&Itemid=80 If you have the 150bhp version.
Hope this helps mate.

nice one, thanks matt! car looked nice the other night when i saw you also

when i was into my VW's awhile back i hurd all the hype about these guys...Very overrated and over priced there remaps are all done by Custom-Code and i had a fair bit of work done by these guys ( 7 grands worth ) and i wasnt happy with what they had done....this was around 3 years ago and i know some of the guys have left after they where taken over a couple years back, they seem to have some better guys working there now i dont want this to put you off as i know TSR is a big name in the VW scene they always seem to be busy and have created some amazing cars.
hmm, but a negative review is a negative review. there are a couple more companies down this way anyway, so will check them out and compare prices. all seem to be around the 300 quid mark at the moment

No way will it use more fuel than an S14A. I've got two friends running both stage 1 and 2 and both retain 30+ MPG.
One is a 150 with a front mount, full miltek and sports cat stage 2 map
Other (a3) K03s, scorpion and stage 1.
From previous VAG experience (leon cupra r) custom code are the best in the business, well that's what the cupra r led me to believe.
afternoon everyone!
i have decided to put the golf up for sale. will make a thread in the for sale section later on.
need something diesel, boring and estate-like for my bikes as i can be arsed with a rack and putting miles on the car anymore.
£3600 ovno for a GTI in really good condition !
jon :)
