the light that comes on with ignition, goes off after about a second or so of start up. So I assume everything is ok. Having read the post on gauges it seems fairly easy to fit a pressure gauge. But what will it tell me in reality? how do you know what a "good" pressure is?

I wouldn't say a pressure gauge was necessary as the light does a good enough job and your eyes checking it isn't losing any oil, but and oil temperature gauge would be useful !!!

Mine does that, I haven't been worrying about it.........

I think you may be a bit confused chimp as the warning light always comes on when you start up and then goes off just to check the light is working and then if it stays on or comes on during driving or hard cornering it means your oil pressure is low, possibly due to not enough oil in there. An oil temperature gauge would allow you to monitor how hot the oil is and suss whether you need an oil cooler or not and look out for problems. You could also use it as a guide for switching off as a sort of manual turbo timer as you can watch the temperature and see once it cools down its safe to switch off !!!

nah nah nah, Im not confused bout it. Im sure the light does a good enough job of pre-warning when oil pressure is getting dicey. And fitting an oil temp gauge looks like a total plopper of a job, Id be more likely to fit a pressure gauge as its a doddle and could fill another space on the A pillar http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif. Was just looking for a guideline to what oil pressure is "normal" really.

On my engine, when the oil has warmed up properly, the pressure is about 60psi which I believe (read as hope) is about normal.

They reckon about 10psi per 1000 RPM is about normal. I think the gauge is a good idea, as typically the light only comes on when there is very low oil pressure. A gauge allows you to see if anything is not quite right before anything drastic happens, hopefully.
