View Full Version : Linus questions....
Right got VSFTP installed and securly setup (me thinks)
Each user (well one user) is CHROOTED to there home directory and are therefore "trapped"
I've tested this at it appears nice and healthy....
However, I have the slight issue of this user name not working every other day?!?! The account is not locked out or expired, it appears as though the password is being changed??!? I was of the understanding you cant change your password via FTP?
Help!
I have checkt he logs and there appears to be some unreconised IP connecting via ftp from japan?

you can't normally change it no, unless they are exploiting it and changing it.
do you know who is going to attached to the server?
and mor still what IP or range they are coming from, if so jsut have a blanket deny in the TCP wrapper (hosts.deny) and put that allowed IP/Range in the hosts.allow file.
Are they actually connecting and getting in, or is it refused?
Dunno if they are getting in, all I an see is the xinetd log stating that someone it trying/has connected via ftp?!
In the VSFTP.log file, there is no activity from them what so ever, no upload or download?!
How do I know if they are getting in? Or if they are being denied.
New to this Linux lark, very steep learning curve, I will shortly have Cricket running to analyse the router traffic, which is the main reason I have this thing in the first place...

I used Squid and Squid-Guard before.. If (like me) you're a windows man.. You can use Webmin to admin it through an HTTP GUI.
hmm..
EH? !??!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Sorry mate, I don't know what I'm talking about half the time.
Squid is a Linux proxy server, and Squid guard is a bolt-on which allows you to view accesses and restrict user right etc.. Can build nice graphs showing who's accessed what sites and all the rest.
Webadmin is a HTTP GUI which you can configure just about everything in Linux from. (Proxy, Mail accounts, DHCP blah blah)
Hey hum.. back to sleep for me.. :)
Rich
Found another log (there are hundreds of them) Its says the account expired?!?!?!?
How the hell do I stop an account expiring?!
Cause in X-win it states the account not set to expire ever!!!
