View Full Version : SMOKEY WOKEY!!!
Agh!! My 1990 200sx has been smoking quite a lot lately, seems after a continuous journey and then standing at idle in a traffic jam or something that it puffs out a couple of clouds or more. Simon Norris said he has seen it before and that it is not uncommon, basically its down to oil breathing and that i should check all oil pipes over the rocker cover and even under the rocker cover also...or something to this extent. Didn't quite understand and am frightened of doing something wrong. Anyone experienced this before? Any recommendations? i figured i'd speak to hi-teq in wigan to get it sorted. Oh and by the way, it ain't gonna be the turbo as previously thought cos its a brand new T28 Hybrid-Awesome!!

DAM!! These cars are great.....:)
Hiya Matty Lad! Look what I found on the 300zx site:
For all of those out their who have kecked themselves as they see bellows of smoke pouring out their exhaust while watching the young couple behind them in the Suzuki Jeep chocking on the nauicous gas http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/redface.gif)) will know that seeing smoke can be a worrying thing indeed. Are my Turbos going bad ?? Is my engine about to blow up ?? Is that what happened to the familly cat ?? Thanks to Peter from Silvia this will help illivate the fears on some of our minds.

White Smoke - for up to and perhaps over 5 mins when cold is a very common problem on TT's which can usually be attributed to condensation in many different parts of the system, this is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. It should go away as the exhaust reaches 80 - 90 degrees , normal operating temprature.
Grey Smoke with light Blue - This is a sign of unburnt oil getting thru the system, could be inoccuous if disapears within 30 Secs, but if regular, seek help.
Grey Smoke with light Blue on Full Temp - This is the Sign of the dreaded rear turbo seal failing, this can usually be attributed to wear of the engine or component failure, will need the seal replacing to regain full performance, new seal - 20 quid , cost of labour 650 quid http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/redface.gif(
White Smoke for 10 - 20 seconds Strong Petrol Smell to smoke, Unburnt fuel accumulated in the system. Common cause is Fuel Pressure Regulator Diaphragm failure, can be diagnosed by sparking the engine in the morning while cold and smelling under the bonnet for the fuel smell their, Must be done while Cold tho or fuel vapour is vapourized the moment it escapes.
Alright fella,
Is the turbo still under warrenty? If it is, it may be worth taking it back, as it does sound like it could be a the turbo, or, a simply check you can do, remove the air filter fron the turbo intake, and have a feel for any play in the baring.

Note that there can be play in the vertical plane. It is 'end float' you should be looking for which is detected by pulling the shaft in and out of the housing (not up and down). if there is any noticeable amount of movement in and out then its on its way out. You will get movement up and down however because of the bush its on. if your turbos new its unlikely but worth checking as it only takes five minutes. hope you get on ok.

Definitely bad news i'm afraid. Exactly the same happened to me. I've literally just got my motor back yesterday with a new turbo. The bearings/seals had gone there was about half inch play in the shaft and there was a crack in the turbo casing.
Good enough excuse to get it uprated with an ND boost upgrade too though :-)
The oil pipe to/from turbo are notorious for becoming blocked. Should be part of major service to take them off and check for blockages/blow them through with compressed air. If youve had a turbo replaced , you should also check these as it may have been the reason for the first one to go.
