View Full Version : Smoking on the overrun
My car has scince I got it given out a puff of BLUE smoke when the excelerator is pressed for the first time after allowing the car to slow at its own pace from 80 mph or above.Iv been told this is due to worn valve seals.Does this sound right or could it be anything else ?.Also how much will I be looking at to fix it ?.

Valve guides sound like the problem, as the throttle is closed, it creates a vacuum that sucks oil down the worn valve guide, as the accelerator is pressed the engine burns the oil on the valve head, hence the puff of blue smoke.
Unfortunatly getting the guides done is expensive, I think your looking at least a couple of hundred for the job, just don't go to Nissan whatever you do you would need a mortgage to pay for it!
heheh.. deja vu.
Until you can be bothered with doing the stem oil seals, I have known some butchers (ahem) to go down motorworld, buy some STP smoke treatment, and shove it in!! it will make your oil vixcosity like tarmac but hey presto!!! No blue smoke!

It could also be the turbo oil seals...

It would smoke all the time if it was the turbo seals.
Im glad (well not really but yer know what i mean) that someone else has this prob, as I prolly did everyones head in on the old board going on about the possibilities of this smoke. I came to the conclusion that it must be the valve stem oil seals, UNLESS the turbo has some kind of oil seal on the exhaust side, as the boost pipes are just too clean inside for it to be going into the engine via the inlet, plus it doesnt do it under acceleration. But I dont know enough about turbos to make a decision, so Im fixing the cheapest thing. Valve stems first then if it still does it, get a T3 sooner rather than later http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif.

It wouldn't necessarily smoke all the time if it was the turbo. Mine had the same symptoms, and the valve stem seals were fine...
Only a couple of hundred quid ehh.!
That sound o.k. to me.Thanks for the help............AGAIN.!!
One last thing..Anyone know the name or code for the gold paint used on my 1990 200sx.?
Cheers

I am just having my turbo reconditioned because of this reason. Chucking out loads of blue smoke. Started with just a bit on lifting off (nothing on booting) but rapidly developed into huge clouds being spurted out, even on tickover. I have since found out that the seals were shot, the bearing itself was gone (about 1/4 inch play in the turbine shaft), the inner case was worn by the blades, and to finish things off, a crack in the outer casing...nice. Doh :-(
oooh, now... Can you say whether you had really oily boost pipes or maybe an intercooler full of oil?
Im trying to narrow down the symptoms for a definitive "Chimps guide to smoke signals" It would be really helpful if you say that your boost pipes were a mess. But im not trying to put words into your mouth.

Not had a look yet, should get the motor back today (hopefully), then I can start testing my new K&N n ND actuator. Should be upto 14psi boost with any luck. What's a rough estimate of bhp with this and a Mongoose stainless too? no chip or other mods...as yet...£££ oh, the spending begins ;-)

A guestimate would be somewhere around 200. There was a guy on the old board selling an ND stage 1 chip. Worth checking out, he wanted 70 quid. It has remapped ignition and fuelling and takes the fuel cut off so you can have stacks of boost, (not wise to go over 15/16 on a standard turbo though)

The easiest way to check the turbo for end float. remove the inlet pipe (from air filter) then pul turbine shaft in and out .If it moves more than a very tiny amount its worn.. only when its totally worn will it smoke all the time.
