View Full Version : Tribalism
From the 1950s onwards, youth culture has descended into what can best be described as modern tribalism. Mods, rockers, punks, yuppies, goths, preppies etc etc etc
What i want to know is...
Do any of you consider yourselves to be members of any tirbe. If so, what and why?

Im a geek mate
Dave
No, I don't think I'm part of a tribe, I'm just me. :)
No.
It totally narks me off.
I'm just 'me'. I'm not a goth/meteller/whatever.
Hate typical goth snobby pretentiousness. 'Look, I'm so different and individual... that's why I dress exactly like all my friends and am more clothes and fashion concious than people you'll see in most nightclubs'
Sad.
Deliberatly went to a gothy houseparty last week wearing a white and red T-shirt and jeans just to make a point. Then two people accused me of not looking 'different'. Mwahahahaha. Boy did they wind up looking stupid.
I'm me. Unique and proud to be.
Sore point and a 'press button for rant' subject to me :)
I wear what I want and listen to what I want. I have a variety of violently conflicting hobbies and have friends from lots of different 'tribes'. I don't fall into any 'set' and I'm glad on it. I get accused of being goth, metalhead, clubber, 'surfer' and 'corperate', geek, 'boy racer' and petrolhead all on a regular basis.
Which is just funny, really.
used to be a hip-hopper, now im just a burnt out mix of various cultures all over the shop really........youth culture as such doesnt exist anymore, just blatant materialism.........
but perhaps the moddin car scene(maxpower boys) is the last bastion of youth culture that is left??ie people under 21 coming together to share a 'passion' however ridiculous and scrabbly it might be........
i think i'm jsut a freak.
which puts me in a subset without being in a subset.
That's the problem with post-modernism, you can't not be in a subset becasue not being in a subset is to be in a subset of itself...
the only way people are set in todays post-modern world is as demiographic consumers, which has nothing to do with what your into or what your interests are!!
ur just labelled as 18-25 25-35 40+ by the marketing powers that be!!

Thankfully these days people seem able to be part of a number of different tribes (which means they're ultimately not a stereotype and not part of 1 perticular 'tribe').
For example, 2 things I like are cars and going to the pub. Most of my mates also like going to the pub so I'm part of their 'tribe' for that, but none of them are remotely interested in cars. I feel like you lot are my 'tribe' for my interest in cars and I've not even met most of you! Some of you will like the pub, some won't. Some of you will share my taste in music or films, others won't. We get on but we're not all mindless sheep who feel we need to conform to each others standards (thank fook)!
We all get the chance to be different and choose our own preferences. Are there really many adults today who feel it necisary to say they like something because of peer pressure? Surely you leave that behind when you grow up? Perhaps there are only 2 tribes, those who have a brain and can make their own choices and those who are dumb and scared and feel the need to do what ever is necisary to fit in?
*I reserve the right to completely change my mind on this subject without warning :D

I beg to disagree on that.
In marketing terms, tribalism is pretty important and still active, esp among early-late teens.
I'm a member of a clan.
Clans are far more l33t than tribes.

I'm part of the mono-thought-baby-eating-anarchist-counter-culture-lefty-dog-on-a-string clique that is urban75
But I'm not young. ;)
I should rather like to be part of a tribe but i know with absolute certainty there is no one else like me... so here i stand a tribe of one..
